RE4 2005, at Castle Salazar currently. I played the remake first a year back and while the original uses tank controls and Leon is more of a goofball (which is jarring compared to Remake Leon’s character), it’s more or less the same in spirit. It’s also funny that I pretty much went through the same motions as with that.

End of Village: Pfft, with the heat I’m packing and skills I picked up, the rest of the game will be easy.

Start of Castle when cultists are swarming me and I’m out of grenades: agony-deep Welp, Ashley died again, 17 times the charm

The lack of a knife parry doesn’t help.

Been playing some Fallout 3 since I got it running on the handheld. I haven’t played fallout 3 since the 360 days compared to NV which I’ve played intermittently over the years and it turns out there’s a reason. 3 really is inferior to NV in just about every way. What I will give 3 is that I find the world map and settlement design to be more thought out. Although that win makes sense when you compare development times.

I don’t like the portrayal of just about every faction in 3. I don’t like the karma system and how they integrated it into other gameplay aspects. The perks are just bad in a lot of instances (“get 5 points in a skill!”).

Don’t even get me started on the dialogue. Sometimes it’s good but very often it’s just the 4 options from fallout 4 without the voice acting.

So yeah I’m gonna have to nut up and try to actually play morrowind one of these days. I’ve tried so many times but I always feel under leveled to even kill rats in that woman’s basement. I guess that just means it’s grind time

Started expedition 33, and it's clearly good. Just in chapter 2 now and enjoying it. But it's been hyped to such astronomical levels that I don't think it'll ever reach them. It seems like a very standard jrpg with a profoundly weird setting and a fun combat system. I'm playing on easy so I don't have to waste time grinding too much to get through it.

We'll see if gets really good at some point or if it jumps into excellence at some point.

I'm playing on easy so I don't have to waste time grinding too much to get through it.

FWIW my experience with the game was that I felt overleveled for most of the game just by doing the side content and never had to do any grinding, but I was doing all the side content for a good while.

I'm researching JRPG games for an RPG Maker project I'm working on. Currently playing Linda³ for the PSX and I love it.

If anyone has any recommendations for 90's era JRPG's with minimal grinding/interesting battle mechanics, let me know.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Panzer Dragoon Saga would tick those boxes, it’s also really short for a JRPG.

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

Disclaimer: I don't know exactly what makes a JRPG except that its an RPG made in japan

Grandia 2 is a game that has stuck with me since I was a kid. Originally on the Dreamcast but I had the PS2 version. It's one of the first games to use the active style combat where characters with different speeds take turns at different times. Plus the storyline is bonkers

It's not from the 90s tho oops

I've moved on from Total War Warhammer and on to total war 3 kingdoms.

Lü Bu's gimmick in total war is kinda cool.
Everyone hates you (because you're a dick^1^), you're shit at ruling (Because you're a dick^2^), all your generals are sharpening their knives to stab you in the back (because you're such a dick^3^), but also you literally can't lose combat (No seriously, if you lose with Lü Bu you messed up somewhere, he can personally kill a full army and a reinforcing full army just by charging into) and your main way of doing diplomacy is reminding people that you just personally slaughered the population of a small european state. If you're ever not reminding everyone that you're the biggest baddest guy around by winning battles, all your generals defect and everyone declares war on you.

1: You get a gradually increasing diplomacy malus, which ends up being worse than if you declared war on someone.

2: You get a unique penalty that takes away income, makes all buildings cost more and lets you appoint fewer generals to posts because "Ruling is for weaklings and eunuchs"

3: You get a gradually stacking "satisfaction" penalty up to -50 out of a possible 100, at like 30 your enemies can turn your generals into spies and make them change sides, below that they have like a percentage chance of ditching you or something, and at 0 they automatically turn on you.

[–] Inui@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey, I just went the opposite direction, lol. I stalled out on Total War 3K because the sheer number of battles I was experiencing each turn in my Legendary Yellow Turban campaign was too much to handle. It's like 4 battles a turn with myself owning half the map and Cao Cao owning the other.

Thought I'd dip into Warham 3 and been bouncing around campaigns a bit but kind of waiting for the SFO update coming out next week too.

Lu Bu sounds pretty solid for a "This is Total War" campaign, since everyone hates you already anyway and you're so strong. I've been working on trying to accomplish hard stuff like that and Legendary campaigns, which I've only recently started playing on.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 2 points 18 hours ago

Warhammer 3 has a nice variety of campaigns. If you're doing mods anyway I'd check out the victory conditions overhaul mod..

If you have the dlc and you want to fight a bunch of varied enemies you should play the wood elves/Orion. And dont listen to the game or your intuition telling you that they're a ranged faction. By the mid point of the campaign you can store full stacks led by a treeman in each of the forests and you do not give a shit about any other territory so you can hand that over to allies, leave it burned to the ground, or just let the enemy take it with autoresolve and come back to it later. And if you get overwhelmed and bogged down on a far away continent you can just do like a tree and leave, you have two separate "teleport me out of this" mechanics.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

I like how if/when lü bu betrays a faction he joins (Pretty easy for that to happen since he gets like -90 satisfaction if he's not in charge) you get a pop up that basically says "duh".

I went from cobblemon on Minecraft, to full on playing pokemon ROM hacks. I am trying both unbound and elite redux, and god damn, I will never pay ~~full price~~ for a pokemon game ever again.

ahem adjusts collar I mean- this only makes me wanna buy more pokemon games! looks out window for impending Nintendo ICBM

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

pirate-jammin

hit up the ol treasure map and downloaded the new version of Factorio (new to me!) and a game called 'Empires of the Undergrowth' which is a ant colony RTS that's pretty fun for a single player game

[–] GoebbelsDeezNuts@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

i got a secret shiny meowth in pokemmo, i fear its all downhill from here

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ive had minecraft for a while, and just started modding vanilla. Even though I can only use stuff like distant horizons very sparingly, it still helps a ton for my enjoyment. I'm basically collecting all the stuff that changes the game in smaller ways, I tried a modpack that overhauled the game too much and I didn't like it. I don't really care about improving the graphics, I want a balance of performance, variations, and features! ☺️

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

also playing on peaceful and keep inventory on because I cant have this game disrupting my nervous system.

I reinstalled New Vegas and played it for the first time in probably 14 or so years. I was never was into traditional role playing games like D&D, Cyberpunk, etc. I mean I know it's kinda obvious that rpg videogames are computer versions of the analog thing, but I was never exposed to the analog thing. I had no frame or reference for why the game was set up that way. More recently I watched people playing traditional RPG games and it all clicked. I now realize that Ron Perlman's narration is basically just what the DM would say before your campaign. It's kind of endearing how Obsidian didn't try to abstract every mechanic just because it's a computer game. Modern games are so heavy on the abstraction.

Star Sector. It's like a space combat mount and blade warband. I put together a little high tech bounty hunter fleet with money made from raiding fascist Syndrian Diktat space stations and hitting their trade convoys en route through hyper space. The ship customization is so insanely addictive. So many weapons, hulls, fighters/bombers, missiles, lasers, and unique ship abilities. And the AI is actually kinda impressive in battle. I have a little swarm of high tech frigates with this zappy emp ability that will disable engines and weapons if it hits an unshielded target. They swarm and disable much larger and powerful ships until my main fleet arrives and unleashes a constant barrage of beam weaponry to finish them off. Addicted.

Been playing Hytale and 2XKO. Hytale has been great even tho it's early access and there isn't really much endgame. I just crafted the highest gear you can at the moment, and have been having a blast just exploring and crafting and upgrading at the benches, this game has huge potential, my only worry is that the TOS/EULA kind of allows for paid mods and stuff, which is not good and I hope changes in the future, also Curseforge is the current way of getting mods but I hope an alternative gets popular, like Modrinth with Minecraft.

I really like the little house I did, but it's rather small and basic, I want to try doing something actually cool, but I'm dumb and can't construct for the life of me cri

For 2XKO I have been playing duos with my brother and it has been super fun, I play Jinx and Vi, he plays Teemo and sometimes Blitz. I hope we get good at this so I can convince him to play SF6. I haven't played it in a while, but I really want to get back into it.

Also I'm watching Frosty Faustings right now and it's pretty cool, the top 8 is just starting right now. My only complaint is that there is a fucking Pissraeli in the top 8, why the fuck is a colonizer allowed to enter the tournament? Fuck that. On the official 2XKO channel mentions of Palestine were even deleted from the chat.

[–] RondoRevolution@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Mf just lost to a 16 year old, unfortunately still in the tournament but on the loser's bracket.

Now its Sonicfox and Inzem time. While I'd rather not root for a USian, Sonicfox is cool as fuck.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Im playing Dwarf Fortress and making decent progress. I suck at the game but I feel like I got the general idea. (After playing it for 20h)

Its a very cool game but im not sure for how long I will keep it going.

I also started Stardew Valley (I know im very late to the party) but I had that on my to DO list forever. Im still super early on though.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Went back to ZEPHON out of curiosity and it's pretty cool. I had previously complained about the lack of progression but it does have a lot of lategame stuff that I hadn't realized. The game actually has a pretty huge emphasis on econ, not just combat, and if you make mistakes when managing your economy you'll be far worse off than making unit micromanagent errors.

I am also playing Oddsparks. I think this game is the best automation game out there right now, which is probably a super controversial statement. Unlike Factorio, Satisfactory, and Dyson Sphere Program, Oddsparks doesn't really care about scaling up your factories very much. You don't need to transport hundreds of materials or anything. It's really all about the fact that the game gives you interesting puzzles to figure out because getting the items around is a non-trivial task. There's a lot of tech for hauling things around, there's a logic system that actually is quite relevant unlike Factorio's (which I'm aware can be a little useful but not universally) because it can be used for designs that make much better use of space for getting items around.

[–] invo_rt@hexbear.net 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

which is probably a super controversial statement

Yes, yes it is. garcia-cock-shotty

Oddsparks is fun though. I haven't gotten into the full game yet. I played the demo way back and the performance got real chuggy by the end. Have you experienced any of that?

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 1 points 12 hours ago

I've been getting stutters but I have a messed up setup in my PC. I'm running it through Proton on a wine prefix that I installed VCC runtime on that gave me a bunch of warnings, and I have a weird Linux kernel version because I was trying to get Blender to work with my AMD GPU and I haven't switched back to a regular setup. But it's mostly ok performance, I only notice the stutters when I'm doing something new or exploring.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Zephon mentioed. Its cool shit.

I was playing Infinite Count and it took me 2 failed games on default settings medium difficulty to get it. From what I could glean from the subreddit I picked the hardest leader. I am 80 turns into a game with Platinum Scion and did much better; my major mistakes on the current game are going all in on Orbs as my unit of choice when they're meant to be paired with something that deals more damage, but I got the econ down super well so it'll be fine once I get to the tier 7 units. Definitely went much smoother than my games on Count where I just floundered and had a hard time getting my econ up because of the pop growth debuff. I won my third game on Count but I was just cheesing it because I got 2 meat trees right next to my spawn and ZEPHON was super friendly to me so I could basically chill and not have to worry about the downsides of playing Count. I really don't understand how you're meant to be killing a unit every turn to keep up growth if you don't have some way to cheese that downside.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh yeah I think the easiest leader is the fallen soldier. I need to spend more time with the game but I really liked what I saw.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

Still on my Sonic beat, 100% sonic r, playing around with mods in sonic 3 air, I also downloaded nights into dreams which is sonic adjacent.

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Started baldurs gay 3 and finishing delty rune chapter 4. And lots of dirt rally cos rally games are like crack for me, very moreish

Back on my playthrough of the 2022 PC remake of Live A Live. I haven't had a lot of time to throw at it, and I'm basically dreading the Feudal Japan scenario because 1.) I want to try a pacifist run this time around, and 2.) that means it's going to be potentially like a 5-6 hour ordeal best done in one sitting, and I've been too busy with work to block out that much time lately. So I'm just doing all the other chapters first. Sorry, Oboromaru. Looks like you're on the fucking backburner until next weekend.

Been playing a ton of Hades 2. It is a very good game, easily my GOTY for 2025 over E33. Probably going to go back to Hades 1 after finishing all the achievements because it's reminded me just how good it was.

Played the first few levels of Ace Combat 7. As a franchise so famous for its "so bad it's good" political nonsense in a fake world, I incorrectly assumed that all the planes would be similarly fake, but no, it's straight-up US air force recruitment propaganda where you can equip special livery from real-life war criminals on your F-16. Gameplay is fine, I guess, but I'm so put off by the chudliness that I don't know if I'll go back.

More Warframe, basically just doing my nightwave + a daily round of ESO now. Vandal drops, plz.

[–] avoid_the_noid@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just beat Expedition 33. Good stuff. Took forever because I had to use that cloud gaming shit on Xbox One and it barely ever works correctly.

About 3-4 hours in Death Stranding and enjoying it.

Finished blue prince and had an alright time with it. Not great but not awful.

Thinking about giving 1000x Resist a go here soon.

Was playing Cross Code recently and lost interest in it before even making it out of the main area. Don't think I'll pick it back up.

Not really sure what to play next.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

1000xResist is lib shit. Alarm bells started ringing in my head when I saw that it was a ”Chinese diaspora” (devs are from Hong Kong) made game, and then the story went where I thought it would, ”authoritarian see see pee bad”.
