Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

"Hello, I am FBI Agent Jay L. Break and I'm here to fre—" Clears throat loudly. "I am here to transfer Luigi Mangione to a secret location for various reasons."

Fuck me, i know we like to mock the average american, but there really are a lot of stupidly brave, rudderless, “on the right track” people over there who are ending up doing adventurist shit because there’s no party to organise them. Sad to see.

I say it often, but I think one of the biggest obstacles is foreign policy. You even see it here on Lemmy. So many people say things like, "PSL seems cool, they do a lot of good work, but don't they also like Russia and China? They sound like a bunch of tankies." I heard someone also say authoritarian left once, which made me cringe.

Until we break through that barrier of propaganda about US American policy, it will be really difficult to organize the public into a real communist party. Otherwise, they're all going to go to the 505051/No Kings, Indivisible, DSA, or Workers Party, all of which just funnel people back to the Democrats right now.

I think more outlets for media criticism and analysis, like Citations Needed or some of what Hasan does, is probably the only way to get people to start to resist all the propaganda being thrown at them 24/7.

or some of what Hasan does

Hasan is also part of the problem. He campaigns for Democrats and always treats them as the "lesser evil", and he is also feeding into the American left's foreign policy problem. He is rabidly anti-Russia and willfully ignorant of the realities of the Ukraine conflict. He refuses to learn about the conflict's history outside of what Western media says, or to try and understand Russia's position. He has defaulted to the liberal "Putin is just bad and crazy" thought-terminating cliché. He praises China for its infrastructure and all the "treats" it's been able to provide its people, but at the same time still clings to the "China did a Uyghur cultural genocide" narrative and always brings out the "i don't like how repressive China is of free speech" card. The American left's biggest problem is that they still cling to liberal American exceptionalism. Until they let go of the last vestiges of that way of thinking, they will struggle to form and maintain a disciplined, principled and militant mass working class movement.

He should have brought a clipboard and hardhat.

And high vis jacket, and carry a big ladder, and maybe be in a wheelchair too. While bringing a film crew.

[–] troybot@midwest.social 20 points 17 hours ago

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 80 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Just a line of people, wrapped around the outside of the prison, wearing various costumes and practicing their bit. Like something out of a Naked Gun or Mel Brooks flick. data-laughing

[–] Commiechameleon@hexbear.net 30 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Loving it... But I'm wondering if we couldn't figure out how to spring him ala oceans 11(12,13,14, idk) and use the scenario as a dnd campaign to map out the many different possibilities across thousands of play groups at once. fedposting

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 22 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

You essentially just described military war games

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 17 hours ago

DnD came from military war games, it all comes together.

Anderson said he had weapons in his bag, and inside the bag was a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter, according to the criminal complaint.

dude was springing him from the can to take him to a barbecue lmao

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 1 points 5 hours ago

matt-grillin Let's get Luigi outta there!

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 42 points 21 hours ago

This reads like one of those "dangerous weapons confiscated" the PDs put up on X.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 12 points 17 hours ago

You attach the bbq fork to the pizza wheel and you've got yourself a hook and handle to zip line to safety and comfort

[–] booty@hexbear.net 28 points 21 hours ago

It's finally time. grillman is based now.

I stabbed myself with a BBQ fork once and it wasn't even that bad

I say this as someone who once got shot with a crossbow

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

What did Daryl from the walking dead miss a zombie and hit you?

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 22 points 21 hours ago (19 children)

His name was Greg and he was drunk

Pulled a classic "Hey, check this out" and nailed me right on the collarbone

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 41 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

This really sounds a lot like the high-jinks of the early Civil War, when nobody was quite certain if secession was actually happening or not.

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 29 points 21 hours ago

Bleeding Kansas campaign unlocked
