Idk why but I feel like this is AI

[–] cAUzapNEAGLb@lemmy.world 126 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It is, yesterday when this was posted, a commenter zoomed in on the leafblower text and it was clearly generated

[–] Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 weeks ago

So now we have it here at far lower quality so you can't properly tell anymore

[–] lefty7283@lemmy.world 52 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

There’s a Gemini logo in the bottom corner

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 25 points 3 weeks ago

Nice catch. Very hard to see against the snow

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is this AI, and just making shit up? I've zoomed into the picture and I don't see any logo. Where is it?

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (10 children)

It's hard to see, but it's in the bottom right corner:

Because it probably is. Look at where the guy is standing and pointing the blower, it's not even in line with the ICE thug spraying the pepper spray. Also why would the protestor be so nonchalantly just standing there chillin with a random gobblygook no-brand blower. That brand name isn't even English.

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 37 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Not only that, but this city street allegedly in Minneapolis or Portland is 100% empty except for some random protester, a single ICE agent in full military gear, and some rando half a kilometer away.

The man holding the blower is not only nonchalant as fuck, but his facial expression looks confused like it's his first time using one.

Either:

  • Some of the pepper spray would've hit the protester before he turned on the blower (or even while it was running), in which case his nonchalant demeanor is even more absurd.
  • The agent saw a man pointing a leafblower at him or even saw it running and thought: "Yeah, this is a great time and position to deploy pepper spray."
  • The protester is using reflex mode from The Phantom Pain and turned the blower on at the exact moment the agent started spraying.

The ICE agent is using an ungodly amount of pepper spray and is continuing to spray despite knowing he's involved in some Wile E. Coyote shit right now.

Perfect angle of the action and flawless timing while holding the camera completely steady. They're literally positioned like actors in a stage play.

I'm sorry: I can't imagine who looked at this for more than half a second and thought: "Yeah, that checks out." There's no "probably" about this without some deeply entrenched wishful thinking.

Oh, and the doorway of that red brick building on the left is casually just like four meters tall.

Bro just hit the perfect parry, let him be.

the cloud doesn't even make sense. Slop.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Everyone is saying it is AI, and it might be, but I suspect not. A big tell for me is that the hand in the smoke seems pretty cohesive with the rest of him. I would expect some artifacting.

I do think it's edited though. Everyone seems to have forgotten that you can just modify pictures without full AI generation.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's weird that he'd carry around a leaf blower that says self defense on it, but not wear any personal protective equipment.

Also you don't see the secret police reaching for his sidearm.

The canister isn't even aimed at the guy with the leaf blower, plus it's out of range. And the amount of pepper spray in that cloud is far more than would actually be coming out of the can. Plus there's no way the guy would still be holding down the trigger after that much was already blown back in his face.

Gotta be fake.

[–] Pyro@programming.dev 4 points 3 weeks ago

Good catch, it gets harder and harder for me to spot AI

Fuck ICE, but also fuck AI.

I'm a simple man; I see slop, I press the down arrow and block the poster.

Seems likely to get you shot, tbh. 2020 was a bit different.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah. They're gonna say they thought you were carrying a gun and it was self defense.

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 28 points 3 weeks ago

Easily mistakable for a 3D printed hand canon, ming dynasty 15th century model

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Anything might get you shot at this point.

I hate how they hide AI behind poor quality.

1 ai slop = 1 downvote

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

There was a pretty extensive study through the 1930s and 1940s on how up best handle a Nazi. They identified many useful tools... leaf blowers did not make the cut.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago

Begone slopper

[–] pjwestin@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Even if you like AI, this kind of post is extremely harmful. Leaf blowers are helpful for disbursing tear gas, not mace.

A word of caution. There are more than a few examples of LEA getting away with murder when they shot people who carried objects that look much less like a gun/weapon than a leaf blower. Not saying it's right. Just saying it happens.

Someone (a HUMAN artist) should take one for the team and actually draw that AI-generated photo. Seriously!

[–] RichardDegenne@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago
[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Icy Minnesota air coming at you at a hundred mph is bad enough, and then you add teargas?

No wonder Minnesota beat Virginia and stole their flag. Y’all are brutal.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No confederate has ever won a land war in Minnesota.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

And the sea route has been closed for quite some time!

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (9 children)

I’m not too versed with civilian suppression tactics, but is actual tear gas sprayed from a can not a tremendously stupid idea as is? The slightest amount of wind will shove that right into your face. I thought gas was only used with mortars or at least in throwable cans, i.e., at a distance, and close range is reserved for sticky fluids.

[–] thatsTheCatch@lemmy.nz 21 points 3 weeks ago

It's almost certainly an AI generated image

AI aside, this would be pressurized pepper spray (the fog kind, not stream) rather than tear gas (CS). Tear gas comes out as a hot white cloud from grenades. One form is the hand-thrown can you mentioned, another is the 40mm type that gets thunk-ed out by a launcher. Instead of exploding, the fuze activates an incendiary element which spews out a cloud of heated gas, carrying CS particles with it.

Side note, don't try to grab one with your bare hands thinking you'll return to sender and save the day. Very hot, there's fire in there.

If you get tear-gassed, stay calm. Running away blind can hurt you more than a little stinging dust. In a crowd, a trip can become a fall can become a trampling fatality so try to avoid that.

They did it to protesters at UC Davis
