I was playing basketball in my driveway one day and I could hear this weird alarm slowly approaching. I soon found out it was a kid in one of these trailers, screaming his head off the entire ride. This kid somehow had enough oxygen to scream non stop for at least a mile.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

Laughed hard at this

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

Yeah been there (the parent pulling the screaming toddler). I always bring a couple back-up snacks to try to deflect the meltdown.

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago

My dad had the trailer. Getting pulled along for a ride to the ice cream shop was the height of decadence.

sicko-zoomer Picturing the kelly comic of this in my mind's eye

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Oh god this WOULD be a good Kelly comic, wouldn't it?

Every time I see a kid in an urban arrow bakfiets, I want to steal it and put it in a time machine to give to my parents instead. My childhood would have been a lot nicer if they had a quality ebike instead of unreliable cars. All the additional stress from driving only resulted in completely passive travel and disconnecting me from 80% of the year's weather. Ebike babies are commuting through parks in January, having positive experiences with wildlife daily, and doing something fun with their parents instead of adding to that driving stress. All of their interactions with strangers on that commute are pleasant instead of someone having road rage at 5x the speed. Under communism it will be part of the new parent ration.

There is no greater joy I get in life than scooting my toddler around in this

[–] happybadger@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm so tempted to get one instead of a Tern GSD. I want an ultra-reliable cargo bike and it seems like my dog would enjoy a bakfiets a lot more than his trailer.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's awesome. I don't trust it in the snow but otherwise it's an all weather car replacement.

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

One thing I do like about the trailers is that, at low speeds at least, icy conditions are really just a hazard for the one stuck pedalling the bike. I can do 80% of my trips on paths separated from cars so it's usually about as much risk as crossing the road.

It's not even peitite bourgeois, it's striaght up feudalist. It's a palanquin/carriage analog.

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

But it is petite because they're so small.

petite palanquinoise

I've got the decadent trailer. Can't put two seats on a bike. The kids love it but want to ride their own bikes now.

I love taking them around in it as well. It's great because they can see out of it better than a car and we can go places cars can't.

They're getting bigger now. Whilst I'd love a front loading cargo bike, a rear seater like a Tern would be relevant for longer and more practical. I'm going to see if I could lease one through work instead of playing outright.

If you aren't already familiar with them, also consider using https://upway.co/. They sell dealer overstock and lightly used bikes at a big discount with a one year warranty. I got my commuter bike through them and it was as convenient as ordering directly from Aventon. It sucks that none of my local bike shops offer 0% APR payment plans, especially for the high-end models where you're buying reliability. Upway is the only financially viable alternative to renting for me.

just a tad too coherent black-mold-futures

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

How much more expensive is the trailer? I would be nervous about falling over in the chair version

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 month ago

You can get a decent used one for like $50 in my area.

[–] Pergoss@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

I've used both before. After the kid gets too big you kinda have to go the trailer route. It can even hold 2!

Put that kid to work

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

Pure luxury!

[–] Ishmael@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I see moms with these and just imagine they must have crazy leg strength

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

These things are cool. I live in a rural/suburb hellscape and this thing world very likely get me killed due to lack of sidewalks, bike lanes, and shoulders. Not to mention the copious Ferd F150s on the road.

[–] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're soooo cool I wish I could have one. They have an electic motor to assist lol otherwise there's no chance you're moving that thing more than a couple meters.

[–] Ishmael@hexbear.net 2 points 4 weeks ago

Okay that make a lot more sense lol

[–] MLRL_Commie@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I am planning to just strap em to my chest and peddle lol. Those chairs seem scary and high up, making it more top heavy and I don't like that feeling.

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The wonderful thing about the wagon is that you can put hilarious amounts of stuff alongside a child. They have so much room, and children have shockingly low volume

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

I do costco runs with my 2 kids in the trailer. Slowly start putting more and more stuff around them and they think it's some kind of game. Thankfully I have an ebike cause that shit is heavy on the way home.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I had the right when I was an only child, the left when my siblings were born, does that mean I'm upwardly mobile?

I'm just thinking of a parent driving through a random puddle with a trailer just nailing the kid with the wash picked up by the back tire. You don't get that with the back seat attachment. That kid just acts as a protective shield from getting rooster tailed.

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

☝️🤓 The trailer has a plastic cover that can be pulled down to prevent that actually.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

nobody expects the random park puddle!

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The proletarian one is actually pretty dangerous. Do that first one pls

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

I've seen happy wheels. I know how it goes.
