Cuban revolutionaries, including Fidel Castro (far left) and Che Guevara (center), in Havana in 1960.

On this day in 1959, U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country following the victory of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) at the Battle of Santa Clara, marking the successful conclusion of the Cuban Revolution.

The 26th of July Movement takes its name from the date of with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, however, the movement bearing this name was not formally organized until the attackers were released from prison in 1955. Public resistance continued sporadically until November 1956, when 80 members of the M-26-7 returned from exile.

Soon after landing on the island, a separate revolutionary group, the "Directorio Revoluncionari Estudiantil" (DRE), unsuccessfully attempted an attack on the Presidential Palace in Havana.

Throughout 1957, armed resistance from groups such as the DRE and M-26-7 would escalate. After a failed offensive by the government against rebels in the summer of 1958, the rebels launched a major counter-offensive.

On December 28th, 1958, after a fraudulent election in favor of Batista, revolutionary forces reached the city of Santa Clara. Seizing equipment from an armored train intended to transport government reinforcements, the rebels quickly captured the city, prompting Batista to panic and flee to the Dominican Republic with a personal fortune of more than $300 million.

In the following days, revolutionary forces entered Havana with no resistance, and Castro established a provisional government. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist–Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

Batista later settled in fascist Spain, dying there in 1973 at the age of 72.

I still remember the redfin video ages ago with the fishermen and villagers in some coastal Colombian village singing after having captured a bunch of us special forces. Wish the Maduro kidnapping crew had had the same fate

Compromising baby photos of me have surfaced, I'm dealing the ramifications of me not always being able to walk on my own two feet. I'll admit that I'm not perfect and I didn't come out of the womb perfect like I've lead on

Pretty neat video. He also points out that calling people, any people (including Russians), orcs is a bad thing actually. Liberals really, really struggle with not being evil like that. Even Tolkien thought the orcs had no Earthly parallel, and every human was redeemable.

Might start doing the weird New York chauvinism, but about my apartment instead. Where else in the whole world could you drink a nice cup of tea, put on some boot socks for warmth, and jack off?

The charges brought against Maduro and his associates really show what a nothingburger his "narco-terrorism" is. The only drug they're accused of transporting is cocaine, which hasn't been the drug people think of as the worst in the like 4 decades since crack was at it's peak. Cocaine is like the mildest of the "hard drugs", the news has been laser focused on opioids, and maybe to a lesser extent meth, for quite a while.

Tens of thousands of people die each year from opioid overdoses. Dozens to hundreds of people with existing heart conditions die thanks to cocaine, another few hundred cocaine was partially responsible, among other drugs. I doubt he's guilty of the charges brought against him, but even if he is he's hardly a villain.

When's the last time you saw a homeless person do cocaine? It's been years and years personally, but I've seen blues off of foil and ice in a bubble literally today. People that party do cocaine, and people that have money do cocaine, and these are exactly the kind of people for whom minor drug use like this isn't a problem at all. Cocaine use isn't eating away at the heart of our society.

2026 propaganda is a different fucking weapon completely. God damn it’s never been easier to ram through a certain narrative and broadcast it on every phone, web page and smart device in the entire country in seconds and ensure that most people won’t even bother to consider if it’s in their own interest. And I didn’t even factor in the slop machines which are an arm of the same manufacturing apparatus in question. Fuck me

Hope seems fantastical at times like this :/

Man the bar is low. Had a new hire join the team a couple months ago and this guy remembers things that I explained to him before and is just able to handle the issue instead of passing it off to me and I'm so shocked lmao. He's making work so much easier for me it rules.

It's fascinating watching the Red Letter Media guys try to talk about the potential effects of AI outside of film and television.

3 guys attempting to approach an economic analysis by remembering old episodes of Star Trek.

focus testing a take that might be on the docket if Cuba is scrapped for parts:

At a certain point you have to genuinely ask if China 'thinking in centuries' ~~or whatever the excuse is for not rocking the boat~~ is productive/beneficial/humanist when at the current trajectory the end of that century is 'enjoyed' by a population projected to be decimated without actual intervention

thoughts feelings feedback criticism books to read things to consider news to hear hope to grasp on to anything anything at all

A day ago I was clocking out at work, and ended up talking to the kind older maintenance lady for a little bit. She mentioned how kidnapping a head of state was not on the 2026 bingo card, and how this was "a Reddit joke".

But I really gotta respect someone who says "I've been warning in vain about creeping fascism since the Reagan administration". +1 to potential organizing connections through work.

Focused on improving my time management skills for the new year. Local news ran a story about area protests and one of the local DSA reps was quoted speaking on how the situation in Venezuela is horrible, just terrible, for not only does it endanger the well-being of Venezuelans, it also potentially endangers "American" troops...

I found that pretty grim. I have a lot of responsibilities in life, free time is precious, but gat damn if this is the face of "leftism" where I live then fuck's sake I need to start getting involved more.

Playing The Sims 4 for the first time and having an absolutely wild existential time

It's extremely possible to keep your sim as a peter pan young adult with potions of youth with minimal "do what the prompts say" attendance

but then the entire world around you ages

the other sim you created across the street to switch off between is already an old lady

the cute girl you made friends with is dead of old age before you made a move

But now I'm the greatest gardener that's ever lived and can buy a mansion with my grapes

flippant doomer post unbecoming of a cadre member of a Leninist Partyboy oh boy cannot wait to walk for a mile or so in a circle today shouting slogans and pretend that's meaningful anti-imperialist resistance

in sincerity - while they are kinda theater/a production from a sausage factory POV - peaceful marches are an important tactic in the toolbelt for building our ranks, recruiting, serving as a low barrier of entry to the larger struggle to do more meaningful shit, awareness building, etc. but goddam does all this shit feel so woefully insufficient to the current moment right now. why do we all have to live in the bad future omori-miserable

I am losing my mind as the amount of bullshit on reddit-logo . The amount of it-is-known for referencing Maduro being a dictator is insane. I maintain that posting and even viewing reddit is self-harm

Genuinely in tears this morning seeing top comments with hundreds of thousands of likes on TikTok and instagram reels about how the Us “overthrew the dictator once again”

Sure you can say it’s mostly bots or whatever, but it starts to matter less and less when normies see the comment (bot or not) as truth. It’s so so hard to keep any hope 💔
