[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 day ago

I call my cat by his name. Not his full name, just the first name unless he's being formally introduced or in a lot of trouble.

[–] waggz@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

mostly... Gadget becomes Gadg or Gadgeypoo, Nova becomes Nova beans.

[–] ViperActual@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

My cat knows his name. Best part is, he'll respond if I talk to him.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 66 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, he knows his name and he comes running.

He also knows the dogs name, and the dog knows his name. Can't possibly miss out on any treats the other one might be getting.

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 37 points 2 days ago

My cats only come running when they hear the other cat's name get called. They only respond to FOMO.

[–] Cyv_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 59 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Cheddar Biscuit has a lot of nicknames. Mr Biscuit. Lord Cheddington von Biscuit shorts. Little Baby Biscuit Boy. Master Biscuits. Cheds. Little Lad. Just a guy. Simply a fella.

We have options :3

I usually just shonen anime fight scene scream 'caaaAAAaaat' from accross the room to get their attention.

[–] oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sometimes. Usually I do a lengthier riff on it.

I have 2, Link and Phoebe.

I'll do a "Linky Link" and "BB Phoebe" (as in baby) because I refuse to acknowledge that she's not still a baby.

[–] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago

I call my cat by his name (and sing songs with his name substituted into the lyrics) all the time.

He’s deaf.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Yes, having multiple cats, they clearly understand their name.

[–] remon@ani.social 28 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I usually call him by criminal terms. Gangster, crook, thief, robber, vandal and such.

[–] toomanypancakes@piefed.world 24 points 2 days ago

Absolutely, among other names. She's usually Margot, sometimes Meemers, Marmar, or Margalos, and sometimes she's Stop Screaming.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I call mine 貓貓 (maau¹ maau¹)

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I have many names for them, though, only one it's the official name. Nevertheless, I call them by their nicknames, which are numerous.

[–] DCErik@lemmy.zip 21 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Miso gets called 'Miso', but also 'Mimis', 'Mrs. So', 'Jennifer Mimiston', 'Miso the Lioma', and 'Mi'.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

  • shitnugget
  • mcshits
  • turd factory

  • lump
  • useless lump

  • princess shits-alot

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 2 days ago

Both Mimi and her son Zigou respond to their names. Orange Zigou is not the brightest, so I value and use the fact the he did learn his own name.

[–] surfrock66@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

Mittens certainly thinks her name is "Pss pss pss"

[–] kat_angstrom@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Harley was a 7 year old we brought home from the shelter, and she already knew her name so we didn't have a lot of latitude to change it on the fly.

However, she did respond just as well to "Barley", so that became her new name, with the standard variety of variants like "Barles" (said like "Charles"), "Barlow" or "Barlikins".

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 2 days ago

Barlikins 😂

[–] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

My Pyrenees is my big baby. My Yorkie is my little man. My orange cat is "fat bad." My other pets have names that are too fun, not to say. I got "bucket." She's a tabby named bucket. I got "meow san" because her automatic feeder came from Japan, and it had an audio feature that said, "meow-san. "Monkey" is meow-sans sister. My partner picked that name. Hearing her call her name makes me HAVE to call her monkey. They're both too sweet.

Dude, I think we have over 30 cats. It's a farm, though. (Not the owner)

Edit: "Hey butthole"

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 10 points 2 days ago (3 children)

My cat is named Loki, and it suits him perfectly cause he's a bit of a fuckhead🤣

He only answers to "Mr. Kitty," and you have to say it like "Meeewster Kitty" or he will completely ignore you.

Only Elliot because he knows his name and runs over when you call him. Sometimes he goes by "not my cat" when I'm looking for my cat and he shows up. (He is my partner's cat)

Sully knows her name but dgaf and only reacts when she's in trouble and I bring out the big guns (Sullivan). She's usually just "my little girl" or "my little angel" otherwise.

No I don't have a favourite why do you ask

[–] lgmjon64@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

When she's in trouble. So most of the time. Otherwise instead of Moonbeam it's missy-moo, cat, moo-moo, missy, miss kitty, or monster.

[–] alternategait@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

One of my cats chose her name, so we only address her by that. If we're getting fancy we'll append onto it, but never totally different names. We also have two brothers, one has many nicknames, but we still call him by his name about half the time. The other we call by his name most of the time.

[–] okamiueru@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think you know the question that no doubt is on everyone's mind ;)

So when she first showed up some other people in my house called her "Bristles" and I was like oh no, not that. I compiled a list of names and just would try addressing her by a name off the list a few times a day. She was napping when I got to her name, but I said it and she lifted her head, looked at me and did that little mrrr? so it's her name.

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nice. Might try that next time I get a cat.

[–] alternategait@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

It worked out well for us. She clearly responds to her name; even if it is just to shut her eyes tighter when she wants to ignore us.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Omg this is such an adorable idea!!!

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sometimes, but usually I have nickmames for them, so Maggie is Maggs, Maggles, Magalicious, Maggalopolis, Maggapotamous, and my favorite name for her, Mama Bear.

Nope, he gets called Meow Meows or Kitties.

[–] soulBit@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Cthulhu gets called whatever name we currently feel she deserves - Lady Meowington, Catthulhu, Catto, Little Miss Muggins. We would only use her actual name to call her/scold her for being naughty

[–] aaaa@piefed.world 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I call my cat by his name, "buddy", or just "cat" sometimes.

Never "my son"
Ever

Yes, all the time. One reacts to it like a dog would react to their name, and will even move toward you to see why they were called. The other one never really reacts different, just facing them and making a noise gives the same reaction., name or no name.

[–] Vinny_93@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

I frequently add 'cat' to the name, so Zola becomes Zolacat, Dora is DoraCat and Bella is BellaCat or the BellaMonster

[–] pressedhams@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Kahn gets boy cat, Kahn coy Kahn, and kitten

Minh gets kitten and spiteful bitch. She hates everyone and makes sure that dogs and cats alike always have food and water with her judgmental Meow and death stare. Don’t you dare touch her though.

Booker gets yelled at a lot so he very much knows his name well. He also knows Book or BookBookBookBook.

Hollow on the other hand does get called by his name, but he couldn't care less. They both do get called several nicknames as well.

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Yes, I absolutely do address her by her proper name, but only when I’m addressing her in song.

[–] DriftingLynx@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

One of mine is officially Sparkles, but he get called Floofy Doofkins, Sparkle Bear, Spark, Lazy Lion, Lounging Lion, Shitty Kitty, and Pretty Kitty.

He knows all of them.

His sister is Ember, but we call her Tiny Tiger too. She responds to neither 😂

[–] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

When we had several, I tended to use the name only to distinguish them; otherwise, they were all simply "cat".

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I try to use their names daily. They know them, but generally dont care lol.

One of them responds to dumby and dingus as if they were his names tho. Jus lyk me fr ig

Nope. I rarely call Trouble by her full name but Princess Peanut Trouble Sparkle knows when she fucked up. Her sister has a name but shows up to "Honey". Their older brother has only ever used "Dmitri" at the vet and is "hey old man" at home.
