Soon it will be easier to visit North Korea than the USA, which I suspect is the plan.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 hours ago

I don't know why anyone is still visiting the Untied States but I hope this deters them

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

Or, and hear me out on this, he can fuck right off.

Then again I'm not the target for this type of tyrannical despotism because there's absolutely no chance I'd ever willingly visit that place.

"In addition to social media histories, Customs and Border Protection would add other new data collection fields, including email addresses and telephone numbers used in the last five years, as well as the addresses and names of family members, the notice reads."

Wtf I was planning to visit NYC but this is crazy man.

The US are really working hard to get prohibition, 30's great depression, and McCarthyism all at once.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 8 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Some other things from the 30s, too.

The snazzy European uniforms?

[–] bystander@lemmy.ca 7 points 7 hours ago
[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 30 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

You think it's going to stop there? US citizens will soon have to do the same, or be on the no fly list.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 7 hours ago

Those lazy fucks, they've already had those data for years!

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 21 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

We have already postponed our Disney trip until the cheeto is gone.

I am prepared to go to Europe or Japan instead though if America can't figure its issues out.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 14 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I guess I'm going have to get some sort of Social Media account that I don't currently use, and keep up with fake postings, just so I have something to show the Redhats when they stop my on the street and say "Ihre papiere, bitte!"

People are already boycotting the us, they don't need another reason.

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 40 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Tourism is only down 30% or so. So maybe they do need more reasons.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 12 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

I can't believe it's so little. Do they not know what's happening here?

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 hours ago

I personally know Canadians who are still going back to the Untied States for half the year and I'm confused as to how they're not deeply ashamed. Do they not know? Can they really be that oblivious?

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 12 points 6 hours ago

People are into sunk costs and book well in advance. A lot of that 30% is no-money-back cancellations.

Wait until you see next year.

[–] Jayjader@jlai.lu 2 points 6 hours ago

Good thing I never deleted my linkedin, that should be much cleaner than fediverse accounts

[–] oldest_meme_420@hilariouschaos.com 15 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

What makes them think that I even have a 5 year old account on any social media platform?

"Sorry, you can't enter the US unless you have a social media account"

[–] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago

This is social media. It also includes email accounts and phone numbers.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 5 points 10 hours ago

Unless you have a FIVE YEAR OLD Social Media account.

[–] slickgoat@lemmy.world 32 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

It's like getting banned from smacking my own balls with a hammer.

Oh noes!

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You realize that you don't have to go to Florida?

But how else am I supposed to pet the alligators? Do you seriously expect me to go all the way to Africa to pet the crocodiles in the Nile instead?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 161 points 17 hours ago (12 children)

Yet another reason to avoid the US as a tourist. Looks like hotels and airlines did not bribe Trump sufficiently.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 20 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Seriously, this is so stupid. I'm never setting foot in US soil ever again.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 45 minutes ago

What if we Holy Roman Empire and the feds just become a figurehead element?

More and more non-usa folks no longer want to see Mickey Mouse, Hollywood or the one-armed bandits.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 58 points 17 hours ago (11 children)

Ok so if I have to travel to the US for work, I will now require my employer to give me a burner phone with a burner number.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

[–] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 1 points 9 minutes ago

You already need to provide all this for a work visa.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 22 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

If you can't prove Social Media history, you don't get in, they arrest you, and deport you without due process to a life sentence in an El Salvador torture prison where you'll never be heard from again.

Just tell your employer you're not going.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 15 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

My employer issues us with a wiped laptop that we can restore from cloud storage over our VPN once we're in-country. Before we return, we back it up and scrub it again. When I go to the US, I always bring a low-functioning burner phone as well.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

Hard to say what the US government knows, or admits to knowing, about your social media usage. I almost completely stopped using social media a few years ago, except for Lemmy, and overwrote all my posts with lorem ipsum, as well as never having accessed it before that without using a VPN and doing some other obfuscation, so it'd take some effort to associate me with anything but some boring Facebook and LinkedIn updates I maintain so that certain people can still get in touch with me.

If it's a US based company, the NSA has all of your web traffic to the site.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 40 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

It depends on their relationship with the social media companies. There's a good chance companies like Meta have already given the authorities a lot of data on their users. US law enforcement might already know about some of your accounts based on your identity, and then claiming you have none might not work well.
