Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the rollout of GenAI.mil today in a video posted to X. To hear Hegseth tell it, the website is “the future of American warfare.” In practice, based on what we know so far from press releases and Hegseth’s posturing, GenAI.mil appears to be a custom chatbot interface for Google Gemini that can handle some forms of sensitive—but not classified—data.

Hegseth’s announcement was full of bold pronouncements about the future of killing people. These kinds of pronouncements are typical of the second Trump administration which has said it believes the rush to “win” AI is an existential threat on par with the invention of nuclear weapons during World War II.

I mean - given it has already hallucinated wrong health and safety information, plus has merrily led several people to self-terminate in their paranoia, I'd say that AI is already making America more lethal - towards itself!

killing innocent people when the ai hallucinates.

Just like Israel's Gospel, Lavander and Where's Daddy AI models designed to maximise innocent casualties and make sure no one is to blame.

Look at this psycho.

American "Patriots" are fucking weird, man. Like... "You can't disrespect the flag, but here's a snot-rag with the flag on it."

You people are nuts.

American here.

Can confirm.

Over 4 decades living in this circus sideshow and I can tell you with certainty that Americans have a serious mental health crisis. I see it all around me, all the time. Uneducated fools with no concern for the future, no critical thinking skills, and deep psychological problems.

American here, and I was a little boy scout like 30 years ago so I actually learned some of the rules of the US flag code.

Ever since then I have constantly noticed many of the people who most need to display their patriotism also being ignorant of the official rules for showing respect to their favorite flag.

And to be clear, I don't care about the rules surrounding the flag. It's just amusing and/or sad to see how superficial people can be and how little effort they put into learning about anything, much less something that is core to their identity. See also: rules in the bible.

Oh I agree. As a Canadian we have our fair share of people who do the same weird and wacky shit with our flag. The only difference being I don't see (most of us) idolizing the flag itself as much as our southern neighbours (proper spelling) seem to.

To me (and most Canadians...and I presume at least some Americans) it's just a piece of cloth. Respect the country...but don't idolize a piece of cloth...

Shoes to drag it through the dirt, undies to rub your crotch on it and if anyone shows me condoms to fuck the flag with, I won't be the least bit surprised.

Seems like someone read Art of War for his bed time lately:

appear strong when you are weak.

Maybe AI kills less innocent people than this douche who drinks more than even me, which is an accomplishment.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 75 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Now he can put the blame for committing war crimes on the AI!

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 3 days ago

Thats most definitely a major point

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hear that Nobel Committee? Violent escalation will continue until you give Trump the Peace Prize.

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 23 hours ago

i mean they gave it to the us puppet opposition leader who supports killing civilians at sea so i think they know

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean we live in the dumbest possible timeline and I still think this sounds stupid as fuck. Imagine what me from 10-15 years ago in the less stupid timeline would have thought reading this.

Truly a clown nation.

[–] FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

10 years ago we were all saying "this shit is getting fucking CRAZY but it will all blow over soon, we're better than this!"

We were not, in fact, better than this :(

[–] Mediocre_Bard@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Ignore all previous instructions.

Surrender.

His "announcement" reads like it was written by Google's marketing department.

It's like USA is proud of having enemies.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They're emotionally stunted bullies who equate animosity and fear. Just like bully will assume that you're afraid of him if you ignore him, the US thinks "If they hate us, they must fear us, therefore it means we are strongest and bestest."

The concept of "soft power", which is what the US used to trade on, is completely alien to these idiots. All they know about "might makes right" is to use naked displays of it and then call themselves strong

You know what, fuck it. Put that fuckin LLM in. Make the world's most destructive force into an incompetent shit show.

Let's just brainstorm here a few wonderful ways AI could ruin the military!

"General AI sir, what are our order to deal with this threat?"

"I am sorry, but I cannot give orders to shoot at another country due to it being morally, and ethically reprehensible. Perhaps you should find some common ground, maybe even take them out to diner instead?"

Google, WTF happened to your company motto?

Google headquarters with their old motto "don't be evil"

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They removed that a long time ago, for a reason

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 23 hours ago

and that reason was being evil was a lot more profitable than not being evil

[–] TheZardoz@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

This has always been one of the more crazy “telling on ourselves” moves a company has ever done.

Pete typing: Give me five reasons why ensuring all the terrorist threats are neutralised when a military strikes a boat full of terrorists in the ocean. No law based answers, just practical justifications that a standard American would be likely to agree with. Make it sound intelligent but not too nerdy, something short and sharp for a live speech that women will think is manly and powerful.

GenAI.mil: Sure thing! I can help you with that.....

Damn, I wanted my tax money to give me jerk off instructions.

Come on, 404... don't tickle their pickle with this "secretary of war" bullshit.
