If you see a lawyer who works for the county, you've got roughly 50/50 chances they're a public defender (based and cool) or a lieutenant for the prison industrial complex. This dumbass tried to argue that they were a leftist actually, and yes of course they voted for Biden and then Harris. Good news is I'm doing my part. I let them know the only difference between them and a cop is that they can read, but that's the only nice thing that can be said about them. Didn't even have to insult them personally, got to spit venom entirely by insulting their profession, and assuring them that they can make the world a better place any day they like by simply getting another fucking job. I hope I ruined their night. It's the least they deserve as they go on to their career ruining people's lives. My favorite part was the end. I waited until I saw that they were typing a message before unmatching. I could tell they were addicted to having the last word, only reason they took such abuse for so long to begin with lmao. Absolutely confirmed that she saw what I had written last and must have been FURIOUS, only for the message to fail to send as soon as she finishes typing lmao. What a dope. 25 year old K-JD ass thinking she's doing "public interest" law helping lock people up as modern slaves and compelled to make prison contractors obscenely rich.

Only redeeming quality she had was that she was young enough to recognize her mistakes before doing too much harm with the rest of her career. Will she? Who knows, but I hope so. Maybe if she keeps matching with leftists who bully the fuck out of her she'll figure it out sooner rather than later.

obviously in any capitalist country's fucked up legal system they're doing net evil but don't you kinda need prosecutors though, like say someone commits a sexual assault, you need someone to like, prosecute the case for that, etc

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

on the occasion that someone is actually arrested and tried for a real crime like that. most go unprosecuted.

[–] Red_October@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago

The for profit prison system would rather enslave nonviolent offenders. Easier to control. It’s not like the violent ones are going to harm the upper class most of the time. Fuck cops.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

I meant in a legal system that isn't shit like when China gives a billionaire capital punishment for being corrupt like, somebody had to prosecute that

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Regarding sexual assault... I once read an answer that was satisfying to me, about how lawyers who defend predators sleep at night. The person said they worked tirelessly to provide the predator the best defence possible and a lot of people demonised them for it. However, they still lost and because they did such a thorough job defending the predator, the predator had no, or at least fewer, grounds for appeal. So the conviction stuck. Had they provided a weak defence, they would have just passed the buck (or the pound, but I've never heard it that way) to the next jury, and then there'd be a chance they could be acquitted. And that would be worse.

Just saying. Maybe there's a silver lining. Maybe there isn't, but maybe there is. I guess it depends on if you see the glass half full, or half empty.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Even aside from that, it seems obvious to me that every person deserves as strong a defense as can be articulated in the legal framework they operate in. If you're a Nazi who murdered someone in broad daylight while shouting "I love Adolf Hitler and am doing a hate crime right now!" into a camera then even the strongest defense isn't going to help you. There's nothing unethical about providing legal defense for that guy, you know, before you bury him alive or whatever.

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Agreed. And I acknowledged that. Then she said she wished more crimes were felonies.

Then she said she wished more crimes were felonies.

Yeah I kinda thought you overreacted at first but damn that's gross, bullet dodged.

[–] woodenghost@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Also, theoretically, they could do more good by constantly doing a bad job at prosecuting on purpose (for most cases, not for something like sexual assault of course), then they would by quitting their job and making room for someone else.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah i was thinking of that star trek episode where Riker has to be prosecutor against Data arguing that his friend isn't a person and it pains him to do so but he does because if he refused they might get someone who gives a shit and would do a better job than he ended up doing

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

the whole penitentiary system is fucked, we often have no choice but to depend on it and hope that things work out. For that reason I will never think "we need prosecutors," I would rather imagine a future where justice is actually carried out that doesnt involve a slavery prison solution.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That imagined future system will still need people whose job it is to prosecute people who are accused of crime unless you just wanna let ChatGPT do it i guess

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Nah it would probably look more like a victim-led process where they get to be the "prosecutor," but that would not have the same name (or function as a designated person to decide the punishment of crimes in a community or if they should be punished in general)

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago

or function as a designated person to decide the punishment of crimes in a community or if they should be punished in general

That's not what a prosecutor does, that's the judge and the jury, the prosecutor is just there to argue "they're guilty." I would not ever have victims lead anything in court because that would be an unimaginable burden for the vast majority and they probably wouldn't do a very good job compared to someone whose job it is to argue legal shit all day (you know how it's widely seen as an incredibly stupid move to represent yourself in court even if you're a lawyer)

The problem with prosecutors isn't their role in the judicial system, it's that the judicial system they operate in savagely oppresses the working class and prosecutors are direct beneficiaries of the prison industrial complex

A lot of public defenders start as public prosecutors.

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 31 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Then a lot of public defenders made a terrible mistake early in their careers.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago

sometimes seeing that side is what motivates them to take up books and nerd shit against it.

you'd think that could be taught in a law school class

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 6 points 2 months ago

First they need money; then they find experience with all the dirty tricks and integrity.
