windows-cool

Immediately after logging in I got hit by a Windows 11 pop-up telling me Windows 10 is dead and that I gotta "upgrade" or else. Guess I'm getting my mark of the beast now

My 10 machine is stuck on trying to update and it uses up all my disk space. I have to get off my lazy ass and install mint.

[–] lurkerlady@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You should try bazzite, very hands free. Better for beginners than mint imo

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago

ty I will look into it.

I already have a drive with Mint that I sometimes dual boot to but I don't want to reinstall all my Steam games and figure out which of the programs I use have Linux equivalents

No Linux version of DS4Windows, for example

[–] lurkerlady@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago

Handhelddaemon for bazzite works with that afaik

[–] Demifriend@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

IDK about other programs but you shouldn't need DS4Windows or an equivalent, the Linux kernel has built in support for Playstation controllers. Also IIRC from when I was using mint, I was able to read from (but not write to) NTFS drives so if it's connected to the same system you could probably just copy the games from one drive to the other, or maybe even just run the games directly from your NTFS drive depending on where the game stores saves and config files and whatnot.

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I need more than basic support though. DS4Windows lets me configure every aspect of the controller and set up hotkeys and macros that I can bind to clicks and swipes on the touch pad. It makes the DS4 really useful for PC gaming.

Steam also lets you do some of this stuff but the controller setup UI is fucking godawful console garbage meant for the Steam Deck or something

DS4Windows just looks like a WinXP program and is much more intuitive to use

Also IIRC from when I was using mint, I was able to read from (but not write to) NTFS drives

When I'm using Mint I can fuck with files on my other drives just fine. thonk

no arguments here about steam input being garbage. also idk about the mint files thing maybe i just had a weird setup or something lol. mint was my first distro and i’ve been off both it and windows for a while

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

i found out all my games just work with my ds4 controller on linux whereas on windows its a huge goddamn headache and requires 3rd party tools

[–] Wakmrow@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I installed Linux this year because of this shit

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

I have dual booted for decades now, but I finally started using Linux primarily just about 4 - 5 months ago and haven't really looked back. Since most of my games work I really have no reason to go back to windows except for the 1 or 2 that just won't run on Linux.

I saw this in another thread but I haven't tried it myself yet:

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

I did this yesterday and so far so good being able to play League of Slop.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

It costs money to extend the service though was is absolute bullshit.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago

Time to switch to a better OS. Windows has sucked hard for a long time now.

Virusm, because no security update. sicko-specter (not that one ??)

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Yeah, pretty much. I'm not that concerned about getting immediately hacked, but eventually it's going to be a Win7 situation where things like Steam drop support and you have to move to Win11 anyway

[–] Des@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

i was able to get it extended another year. need more time to settle on a linux build and get used to it (i've explained before i don't want to dual boot because of driver issues so i need to be able to BIOS swap boot drives)

once i crack this thing open and install my new HDD i'm going to play around with PopOS first, then fall back to Mint or other easy mode type if i don't like it. only thing I want to verify is my games work through the steam integration thing

i already use FOSS everything for everything. windows is just a shell at this point i'm ready to discard it has no purpose

(hoping my entirely AMD system will be smooth with drivers)

You can turn off those ads somewhere, and explorer patcher will let you have a normal taskbar and start menu again. (Or just use Linux if you don't absolutely need windows.)

I still need to figure out how to rip the stupid AI shit out of my windows computer though. Can't change the font size easily in notepad but you bet it has a built in llm textslop generator lmao

[–] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

You can turn them off, but if you use a shared computer (like at work or school) the ~~ads~~ "headlines" still show up as long as the last person who signed in didn't go out of their way to disable this feature as well.

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

You can get rid of the AI ads on the lock screen just by setting your own lock screen photo. You lose the nice photography but the trade of is worth it
