oh my god the actual article (archive link, I'm not giving the fucking standard any clicks) is actually so much worse than the headline.

tl;dr gen Z are losers for eating early and not drinking a lot, and maybe going to bed early and hitting the gym in the morning, rather than getting sloshed and eating gut bombs late at night and then barely dragging their hungover asses into work/school/whatever the next morning.

[–] BabyTurtles@hexbear.net 39 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Some of my Gen Z coworkers have said that they go to bed early and workout early and don't drink because if the revolution comes they want to be ready for it, and I honestly couldn't be more fucking proud of them.

[–] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

This is motivating my millennial ass to get back to the gym.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago

These fuckin GEN ZEES learning from MY MISTAKES? LOSERS

Hey don't culture shame me

I would get sloshed and eat gut bombs late at night more if it didn't cost 40 dollars to just exist outside and another 40 to actually drink something.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

That's why you just drink at home and have some microwave bean burritos in the freezer!

It's not the most well written but the underlying issue of applying capitalist logics of efficiency to one's entire life is sound

Most places no longer have locations that are aren't highly commercialised, for people to simply exist and relax in a communal setting

[–] lapis@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

that would be a great argument, it's too bad the article barely even touched on that as it ragged on young people not having the same self-destructive lifestyle the author did at their age.

[–] WrongOnTheInternet@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Look that's a fair point

[–] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

like yes, but don't be too kind to the author who didn't make this point, instead waxing poetic about making the waiter kick them out after closing and wrote a whole ass opinion about how 13-28 year-olds are "losers" for not spending a couple hours wage on a single cocktail.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

there is something inarguably sexy about a late night dinner.

It is in fact very arguable and I'm going to argue it. For me, eating dinner after 9PM either means I've had a relentless and exhausting day or my sleep schedule is fucked.

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

addiction to expensive harmful substances is, after all, what culture is really all about.

[–] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

I know a fucking gen xer wrote that trash. I can smell it from here.

[–] charly4994@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

6 is early? I eat between 430 and 530 normally but I also start work at 7am and am usually in bed around 9, eating after 630 usually means a night of heartburn because I probably have hiatal hernia.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 49 points 1 month ago (5 children)

6pm is funny because I can't tell from the title alone if that's supposed to be too early or too late. 6-7 is about average for me and I'm a millennial.

anyway circadian rhythms come for all of us in the end, someday you'll be eating your dinner at 4 and going to bed by 8 just like your grandparents.

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

6pm is like the single most normal time to eat dinner in America

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You don't understand, you're supposed to eat dinner at 11pm and go to bed at 4am after downing litres of alcohol! Anything else is woke Gen Z loser behavior!

Love 2 be 60 years old at 40 years old

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm sure it just feels right at that age.

[–] nfreak@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 month ago

5-6 was totally normal for me growing up and these days it still is

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Where I lived until recently, old people went to bed around midnight and middle-aged people around 2-3 am. I used to get social and business-related texts in the middle of the night all the time. Sometimes I'd be in bed already and have to wake up to make work arrangements.

raging middle aged alcoholic spews inane nonsense to justify her lifestyle and paycheck

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I'm a millenial but I've always had to get up at 6:30 at the latest for work, which means going to sleep at 10:30, so yeah?

E: read the "article" and wow, could this be explained at least partially by increasing economic precarity and a lack of free time among the youth? No, it is Generational Bullshit.

[–] WrongOnTheInternet@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

The lens is generational bullshit and alcoholism

[–] Ithorian@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

6pm is a late lunch, dinner is between 9-11.

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Some people never got to eat dinner on 9-11 you know.

[–] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 35 points 1 month ago

Hey we shouldn't take Salvador Allende's death lightly

[–] Palacegalleryratio@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Wait I often eat at 6 - am I a loser?

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

What the fuck? 6pm is like canonical white person dinner time? Excuse me What the fuck are you talking about?

Gen Z dinner takes place at 6 or 10 and the distribution is bimodal, not normal.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

Oh god it's my mom and her eating dinner at 4pm like my grandma used to and me being hungry at like 7pm. Now I eat dinner at 7, snack, then fast 12 hours and sleep like a human.

[–] TrashGoblin@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

She gets too hungry for dinner at 8, that's why the lady is a tramp.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm not force-feeding myself a steak at 4:30 to save a couple of bucks, I'll tell you that!

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 17 points 1 month ago

Work, maintenance chores besides cooking and washing up, bathing, enough time to wind down so sleep is possible... Yeah not surprising at any age.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

based, germans must be eradicated

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

USians are very weird with their early dinners though.

Eat earlier if you want, I don't care and I know it's not generational bullshit, but restaurants do close way too early now and this country has always been fucking stupid about what amounts to its early curfew hours. It does feel romantic, and even feels biologically right to me, to have a late dinner with someone in a somewhat empty restaurant on a quiet night in a nice city with some pretty lighting. I will die on this hill.

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

I eat dinner at 2pm thurston

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When I do BJJ dinner is later at like 8 or as late as 10 Moscow time. Otherwise it's at 6. I'm not Gen Z but I'm known to lose a time or two.

I really got nothing else to contribute. That's just where I am in the world

[–] Palacegalleryratio@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Hmm weird, I’m the opposite, on nights I do various sports they meet/I go out at 7 or 8, so on sports nights I eat a light meal at about 5:30 so it’s digested enough so I’m not sick but I’m also fueled to perform, I’ll then have a small supper to put me on when I get back home. On a normal night I eat later, 6 - 7:30 depending on when people get home from work etc.
