The magnet on the bonnet is pulling the car forwards as much as the magnet hanging on the wire is pulling backwards towards the car, and since they share the same root object (the car) the net motion is zero.

If either of those magnets were rooted on the ground, the car would move (albeit not very far)

This reminds me of Bender putting his arms back on.

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 23 points 3 months ago

I love cartoon physics

[–] guy@piefed.social 23 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Dawn, didn't knew you could do that with lasers. Brilliant

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 3 months ago

Yeah lasers move at the speed of laser, not the speed of light.

[–] perishthethought@piefed.social 18 points 3 months ago

She blinded me with sciiiiiience!

[–] Technus@lemmy.zip 53 points 3 months ago (1 children)

We used to make these all the time as kids. You need a second pair of magnets in push configuration on the back for this to work.

Don't forget the spark plug wrapped in wire that's been taped to a light bulb

With the right electric field you can generate (a small amount of) thrust our of ions in air flowing over a charged plane.

One of the myth-busters "anti-gravity" devices they tested was actually (very weak) a static electric ion thruster.

Pretty cool - but it did need electric power input.

What about the 4 magnets on the sides for turning!?

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

You're going to need a three-way monopole electromagnet if you ever want to reverse.

You need a stronger magnet at the front obviously.

Or it’s a toy American truck and they’re metric magnets. Swap them for federal units.

Water destroys magnets. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Well duh. Why else would the magnetic record on the sea floor flip back and forth?

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So you can hear the 'B' side.

[–] shittydwarf@sh.itjust.works 40 points 3 months ago

You gotta release the parking brake

[–] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 33 points 3 months ago

The handbrake is still on.

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

I think it is working. Exactly as designed.

[–] Peanutbjelly@sopuli.xyz 17 points 3 months ago

Just gotta pull yourself up by your bootstraps and figure out out like i did.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 10 points 3 months ago

Fucking magnets, how do they work?

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 2 points 3 months ago

You're pointing to my colleague?

[–] cmgvd3lw@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 3 months ago

You have too pee on the truck bed

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

missing microwave transformer, HHO electrolysis, cellulose, and nitric acid bro... obviously

[–] darklamer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The magnet dislikes you personally, that's why.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Far too many people think this is how “energy” and “frequencies” work.

[–] knacht1@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

It used to work till you broke it.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 months ago

reminds me of the videos of that guy who sits in wheeled bucked ostensibly pushing himself with an umbrella and a leaf blower; guy carries a leaf blower, umbrella and bucket around all the time just to make people look at him. lol

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 2 points 3 months ago

Rookie mistake, the thing holding the magnet from the back side is also metal so it cancels out
