The Sudoku puzzle format consists of (usually) a 9 by 9 grid that must be filled with numbers. The classical Sudoku rules are as follows

  1. Each row must contain all of the digits from 1 to 9, with no repetitions
  2. Each column must contain all of the digits from 1 to 9, with no repetitions
  3. Each sub square (3x3 grids marked by bold lines) must contain all of the digits from 1 to 9, with no repetitions

The historical inspiration of Sudoku begins with the Latin square, a type of grid problem similar to Sudoku in that it consists of an N by N grid where N digits (or letters) must be arranged in accordance with rules 1 and 2 of Sudoku (the sub square had yet to be invented). The first known example of a 9 by 9 Latin Square is from a monograph over 300 years ago, written by the Korean mathematician Choi Seok-Jeong. However, the Latin Square was popularized in the west by the legendary mathematician Leonhard Euler, who independently invented it almost 70 years after Choi Seok-Jeong.

According to Christian Boyer (idk who this is), on July 6th, 1895, the french newspaper La France published the earliest known example of a "true" Sudoku puzzle following all 3 rules of modern Sudokus, although french newspapers had previously been publishing similar (but different) puzzles prior. The name "Sudoku" itself (meaning "single digit") comes from Japanese magazines in which the game was popular during the 80s and 90s.

In Modern times, the Sudoku puzzle scene has been blessed with the addition of numerous variants, that add on additional rules, elevating the puzzle. The puzzle in the provided image is one such example, known as the "miracle Sudoku". It comes with 3 additional rules on top of the 3 original.

  1. If 2 digits are separated by a knight's move in chess, then they cannot be the same
  2. If 2 digits are separated by a king's move in chess, then they cannot be the same
  3. If 2 digits are adjacent (left, right, down or top, none of the diagonal directions), then they cannot be consecutive (ex - 5 and 6, or 7 and 8)

As can be seen from the fact that only 2 digits have been provided to start with, modern Sudoku authors are big fans of making puzzles that appear to be impossible to solve. This of course, is my favorite part about modern Sudoku. If you want to try to solve the miracle Sudoku, here is the link.

Some of the other example variants add new rules, such as German whispers, Dutch whispers, Renban lines, Entropy lines, Thermometer lines, killer cages and many more. You can find a massive collection of these puzzles on the logic-masters website.

I've been trying to play more 3min blitz chess because that's the time control we play at work and I fucking hate losing on time. One game I literally had mate in 1 and time failed. This last game I had mate in 2 and he had 7 seconds, like that's just garbage. Chess is not a game of speed ohnoes

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 12 points 4 hours ago

It's not looking good for me folks. I'm beset with psychological issues I don't know how to address.

Played a game of chess with my brother (who is pretty old). Feeling good about my overwhelming victory doggirl-smart.

I lost a Knight and a pawn, while he lost every piece other than a single Bishop.

These aren't the casualty ratios of war. This is more like I launched a nuclear bombardment campaign at my brother's "kingdom" and lost a small amount of forces in the mop up operation afterwards to isolated bandit/post apocalyptic survivors.

am so bad w time isaac-cry . More below

spoilerTime goes by so fast I often don't know what time it is . I want to discuss getting tested for ADHD with my therapist but I feel it's going to be the usual saying that I don't know everything about this topic. Even with passionate interest I'm finding it hard to focus on one thing without forgetting about it entirely or getting on track a few hours later. Even if I break things down into small parts, try setting alarms I still find it hard. Doesn't help that am hyperactive most of the time, I feel like I constantly have to stim.

Self study is difficult, doing a thing where I'm trying to figure out what I don't know and studying that. Got a book on HVAC and instead of feeling like a smarty pants happy with what I know struggling with what I don'tyamcha I set myself a monumental task so I can have some slack, wanna become an HVAC elite so need to fully understand 6 categories of the field

Gender affirming inconvenience?

I went outside without a bra by accident. Had to literally hold up my boobs while running down the stairs to prevent them from bouncing. Was a very awkward walk to the supermarket with my little brother who doesn't know I'm trans*. I had to hold up the shopping bag and umbrella strategically to cover up.

Sometimes, I feel like you could make a sitcom out of my life.

*Although I have been dropping incredibly subtle hints in the form of LGBT memes. It is a good sign that he responded positively, but that little fucker can't keep his mouth shut, so I'll keep my mouth shut instead.

Sometimes you think you know but then it turns out you don't know, remember this and reflect often

A man told me his niece transitioned and then asked me if I knew her. She is more than a decade older than me and lives in a different city.

[–] Alisu@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

How would you not know her? Are you not using your transponder? You should know all the trans people in your country by now

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 8 points 8 hours ago

They want me to do ICB in Trauma. Kind of spooky, usually it's something you do after 6 months to a year in the job. But they said I was a fast learner and had experience from pediatrics, which I guess I do. Guess I got to get better at reading ECGs, best I know is SR, ST, asystole, bigeminy 😬

[–] inTheShadowOf@hexbear.net 13 points 15 hours ago

If the most I ever do in life is transition and take care of my pets, that really is a success tbh

There's a part of me that would love to be isekai'd away somewhere exciting, but transitioning has been exciting and life changing. Maybe that's the isekai I wanted all along thonk-trans

Update on my job shit if anyone caresI spoke on the phone with the HR rep and my walking out of the meeting was considered abandoning my post or something and so as far as the company is concerned I have quit and that was my last day. I’m gonna push for unemployment anyways but idk if there’s anything I can do about it. I’m feeling really depressed about it ngl, I didn’t like my job at all recently but I still did a good job and would have stuck around if they didn’t effectively force me out. I hope I can find a new job soon.

Went to Seattle, watched MCR, it was kick ass! I was so happy with how much trans pride there is there!

Had to use a burner phone, going to the states feels pretty fraught 😬. The customs guy was fine, guess it helped that I was going to a concert and leaving shortly after.

[–] other_platypus@hexbear.net 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

glad to hear it went well, the news paints a really grim picture, and I do wonder what the variables are that increase the risk

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Probably would've been harder to go more south, but so long as youre passing customs in Canada the worst they could do is presumably tell you you cant come so you just go home. A friend of mine wants to go to Texas in August, she's also trans AND wants to compete in a sport during it - I dunno if I would've done that
