Pope Francis died? The FUCK. not that I care don’t get me wrong. I’m just blown away by how deep under a rock I live.

Pope Francis installed 80% of the cardinals who will pick his successor

I hate saying something like "That's good news," at this site because people will say that it's not. But it certainly is for me. I had no idea. That's good news.

We live in hell so sometimes a little hope for harm reduction is a good thing.

[–] HiImThomasPynchon@hexbear.net 7 points 4 days ago

Hexbears can have little a harm reduction. As a treat.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago

it's not as bad as it could be. never call anything to do with an international pedo ring "good" unless it is destroyed and the assets are liquidated and distributed among their victims.

the best thing that could happen is that trump captures the papacy and moves it to new orleans or something. maybe salt lake city. with trump, who knows.

a second avignon.

Speaking of - Cardinal Raymond L. Burke, the most likely American to have a shot at the election, is a hilarious crank btw

[–] casskaydee@hexbear.net 4 points 4 days ago

He was such an asshole he got my parents to quit Catholicism lol

Antipope time

[–] Lemister@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

Saint Louis is the center of American Catholic institutions already.

We need to infiltrate the cardinal secret meeting and get our guy on the pope chair

Imagine an owl in one of those pope hats.

[–] determinism2@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago

Just go there, raise your hand and say "personally, i think GOD shoudl be the pope" and then everyone will have to pick you.

My first order as Pope is that we're sending the Swiss Guard to liberate all of the ICE prison camps

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

That would make a sweet anime.

Not likely. The most likely Cardinals to be Pope are all liberals. The furthest right that have a realistic chance, given the Cardinal College being stacked with liberals, are Parolin and Turkson as far as I can tell. They're not very likely to continue trying to open up spaces for LGBTQ people in the Church, and probably will say many more things like what Francis has said about 'gender ideology.' More likely still, IMO, are Pizzaballa, Tagle, and other liberals who I think probably would continue Francis' efforts and might go further. I think it's extremely unlikely that we get another JPII or Benedict XVI kind of Pope who writes encyclical after encyclical condemning any kind of movement towards tolerance and reform.

[–] Guamer@hexbear.net 28 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Pizzaballa

They won't let him in for the name alone

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 20 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sadly, they pick a less awesome name when they become pope

[–] Guamer@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

Oh yeah, forgot that

[–] someone@hexbear.net 11 points 5 days ago

Sadly there's precedent. There was the famous case of the the German-born Cardinal Goestheveezell in being denied candidacy to the papacy in favour of the one who would later be known as John Paul II. Apparently nobody wanted to have to deal with jokes about Pope Goestheveezell.

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

Well he's required to choose a Pope name to be called by so it's not really a problem

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

So also likely the next Pope will not be a Zionist either?

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago

Depends, Zionist by what metric? Pizzaballa is the one who's the most pro-Palestine, yet he's still a Zionist in the sense that he's affirmed Israel's right to "defend itself proportionally." Does that outweigh his outreach and support for Palestinians? I'm personally biased and I definitely think there's room to argue either way on whether that's sufficient for someone who's supposed to be a moral authority. As far as I'm concerned, though, as far as liberals go these are quite decent.

[–] RiotDoll@hexbear.net 16 points 5 days ago

the pope prophecy says he is the last pope. popes are over. no more popeage

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 10 points 5 days ago

100% reich wing fascist. It's the trend in Europe, US, and their tenticles down south. Francis died at 88 to remind us of how the Catholic Church collabed with i-am-adolf-hitler. He also died right after meeting jaby-vance .

People go around the times that are significant to them. The universe does have a strange sense of humor and messaging.

State power uses the church. This pope wasn't playing ball with state power demands. You can bet power brokers are going behind the scenes as to who would best suit their demands.

The US evangelicals want Africa to curb it's independence and China. Africa is going through somewhat a Renaissance and with more and more successful purges of colonalism, perhaps, but not likely, they will realize the missionaries true goal. Most pleb missionaries think they are just spreading the religion, but they are in actuality making the populace easy to control. Then if that backfires it always backfires in an oppressive manner such as say Iran where individual expression is demonized as "foriegn influence."

We even see that here with Red Scares in the state. Oh that's "Chinese" or "Russian" propaganda!

Much of the world was fine with neurodiverse and queer people before Europeans fucked the world up. They were ancient societies going back eons of experience. Much of the modern laws criminalizing and demonizing queer and neurodivergent stem from state cordinated dogmatic laws.

So given the hightened state of the world as it is now, i would imagine states would want to grasp more control over not only areas they want to vulture because the tap on their own people is running dry, but also areas of the world where their greedlust corruption influced politicians and benifactors want to vulture even more. The fantical prosperity gospel evangelicals Trump and other reich wing bastards in power with large economic control are most likely going to throw their Pope selection into the hat for ultra conservative candidates.

According to the pope prophecy the last pope will be peter the roman
