like for example,, one time i was browsing through some neofetch screenshots and i found out that a lot of them have anime or furry stuff as their wallpaper or profile picture,, but they use linux. hmm or maybe they even have proprietary videogame images!! i used to think that was bad but now i realize that even if you have proprietary stuff as images like,, furry fanart of some proprietary videogame, it's like just a picture, a jpeg. but still,, younger me would've freaked out by the idea of having proprietary files, but i still enjoy linux. what do you think?? please

I've been using Linux for a couple decades now -- I use Windows at work and came to like bing desktop; it's unexpectedly nice.

Hahaha that was actually funny to read, good shitpost OP

This is the most unhinged shit I ever read

On a scale from 1 to 10, how autistic would you say you are? Because caring about proprietary motives on the wallpaper of other people sounds a little divergent to me.

We really need a Linux circlejerk community for this type of thing.

[-] MyNameIsRichard@lemmy.ml 28 points 2 days ago

I think people can use what they want as their wallpaper

[-] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Man, if you're freaking out over """proprietary wallpapers""" just wait until you see how many MacOS clones there are in r/unixporn lmao, chill.

my brain is so fucking cooked I can't tell if op is joking or just a teenager

[-] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 days ago

I wrote (not only, but some) more intelligent things on the Internet when I was a teenager.

[-] adrihii@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

umm,,i'm not joking or am a teenager, i'm 21, it's just that when i was 18 and stuff i was really into that, into linux. into free software, and my entire life was about that,, i still like gnu but i also like other stuff like the furry fandom!!

What do I think? I think it's normal to have wallpapers that aren't related to the kernel of you OS and I'm struggling to make sense of how people setting their wallpaper to something they like could possibly be a problem.

[-] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Why would anyone care about what other people have as desktop wallpaper? I don't even look at my own wallpaper that much

[-] akkajdh999@programming.dev 13 points 2 days ago

I think they might be using linux for something else other than taking screenshots and being fanboys

[-] Karmmah@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

TIL there's people thinking about stuff like this. Honestly a wallpaper is just some image that you chose to make your desktop nice to look at to me. I think I even used Windows XP wallpapers on Linux for some time.

[-] HumanPenguin@feddit.uk 9 points 2 days ago

I think I even used Windows XP wallpapers on Linux for some time.

Well now I suddenly care.

Why the hell do you want to watch the world burn?

;)

[-] waspentalive@lemmy.one 1 points 1 day ago

I have an AI-generated image that looks very much like Bliss, the prompt was ""Deep Blue sky. Small puffy, bright white clouds. Grassy green hill."

[-] Karmmah@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

If I remember correctly I got them from this collection on archive.org and honestly they are just really nice quality pictures. But probably also a bit of nostalgia. 😄

Every time I work with a Mac, Hackintosh, etcetera, the 5K upscale of XP Bliss is my default as a joke (except I think near the end of one school year, where I set the background to something from OS 9).

It was even my iPhone background for a while, though right now, it’s a random James Webb image.

I've been a linux user for 25 years.

My computers are all named after Autobots and my wallpaper on each computer is a picture of that computer's namesake from one of the various continuities.

That's just how I roll out.

I don't think that purity testing people is an attractive method of talking about free software? We should meet people where they are, and besides, if games are good, they're good. Doom started out as proprietary software and got GPL'd. It's also cool to think that reverse engineering software, like in the case of OpenMorrowwind, is a thing. Besides, I pirate proprietary software all the time with cracked DRM. The harm is in the restriction of user freedom, not necessarily in the existence of the laws if you view the laws as fake and don't adhere to them. Let's talk about cracking DRM and decompiling these games. Let's talk about modding them. Let's talk about making servers and playing them online together.

In case you're interested, its actually really easy to just grab this big Git repo of hundreds of Linux related wallpapers from different distros. Roughly half are gorgeous landscapes and you can be assured the photographers all gave explicit permission for their work to be distributed as wallpapers. Check it out!

A wild gunnerkrig fan!

[-] savvywolf@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago

If you're a furry Linux user, you're only allowed to use desktop backgrounds of Xenia. :P

Assuming you're serious and I'm not being whoosed, remember that Linux is a tool, not a cause. Many use Linux because they like Linux, not because they want to purge all non-free things from their life.

raises trans, linux-using paw ^.^

Thanks for bringing this to my attention :3

My Wallpaper is a set of "Neon" artwork I did on Night Cafe. They have black backgrounds which can be centered and merge with the black border around (so it always looks like the art was made for this particular screen setup, including the panel on the left. One of my favorites: https://creator.nightcafe.studio/creation/Z0dVGQxc4Uyy3jCm8Nyz?ru=waspentalive

What should they use in order to not freak younger you? A screenshot of some lines from the kernel source code? A picture of Stallman and Torvalds tenderly embracing (quite unlikely)?

On my Debian and Mint computers, I have countryside pictures (I live in Paris, I miss seeing some real country landscape, mind you) and paintings (oil and watercolors, all works I admire) and some illustrations (comics, manga, whatever I appreciate enough to be wanting to look at it from time to time).

Sorry for younger you but I don't have a single image related to Linux nor to GNU philosophy, no matter how much I appreciate them.

freaked out by the idea of having proprietary files

I would suggest you read a little more about what the four essential freedoms are and how they relate to code and the user rights, not so much to do with art and wallpaper choice.

I've been using solid black desktop background since the 90s!

[-] Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show 2 points 2 days ago

What you use as a wallpaper is personal choice. Maybe you like anime. Maybe you are a fan of a game franchise. It's personal choice, so it shouldn't matter to anyone else what you have on your wallpaper.

Shouldn't you be allowed to wear Adidas shoes, since you run Linux on your PC?

[-] stationary_melon@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

If you aren't compiling your own shoes you are legally forbidden to use Linux.

Sorry, I don't make the rules.

[-] FigMcLargeHuge@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

When you say 'younger me' do you mean like four year old you, because eight year old current you doesn't make sense? I have no idea what the whole point of this post is, other than it must be some chatgpt output someone thought would be funny to throw out.

Minding wallpapers if they're not questionable or illegally obtained sounds like a symptom of a disorder to me. That's my answer.

[-] adrihii@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

ok thanks but i was very obsessed with gnu

[-] HumanPenguin@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago

No bodies business but the user what wallpaper they like.

I use images from the UK canal inferstructure where I spend much of my time.

If you're willing to tell me to do otherwise. My response is going to be short and rude.

[-] TheDeed@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

We should probably execute them in Central Park via guillotine IMO.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
