Haaretz is more like "the land", its a pretty common word you see in liturgy and it's usually like the land of Israel.

Sometimes people I just met (in a platonic context) will ask me things like "hey, what's your Instagram, let's keep in touch!"

My standard answer is that I don't do social media, but I have found that people take it as bragging perhaps? I get answers like "oh, good for you! I wish I didn't" or whatever.

If I say oh here's my number that seems too odd these days, people not that much younger than me (I'm 31) don't seem to text anymore. They use fb messenger or Instagram or others.

Also saying something like "I'm a privacy advocate and I use the fediverse" is also an odd thing to say unless I'm around techy people and even then it's weird tbh.

How do I approach this? I don't think I am better than people that use social media, its just not for me. I would prefer to text but I am not sure that works for a lot of people.

Or should I just bite the bullet and get an Instagram so that I don't seem weird, and then perhaps ask for further contact details via that platform?

Abstaining from social media can be extremely alienating.

autistic btw if you couldn't tell lmao, I have spent a lot of time thinking about this problem

We need to start distributing resources more effectively, not culling people. The majority of the human population consumes very little.

When people talk about overpopulation they always want to get rid of people other than the ones in their own home country, strangely. When the advocates for such policies are in first world nations that consume considerably more than the people they want to get rid of.

Let me ask you this: if you believe the earth has exceeded its carrying capacity, wouldn't your conclusion be to start getting rid of people or halting their reproduction? That's textbook eugenics...

Meanwhile Israel has a holiday where they celebrate running over an anti-genocide protestor with a bulldozer, flattening and killing her. They make pancakes on that day to celebrate.

These are deeply boring to me. I'm an asshole so sometimes I like to completely kill the vibe and force a subject change.

Im black. Usually something along the lines of "I'm like 30% European, so weird how that got there!" makes everyone very very uncomfortable and we suddenly stop chatting 23andme blood quantum.

I've never actually taken one of these tests either but this line works.

Large scale factory farming with little regulatory oversight and wretched conditions for both animal and human alike.

It's going to have to get much much worse before engineers unionize. I am sorry to say my fellows do not occupy reality in a class sense and these layoffs are just a taste of what's to come.

I also don't encounter a lot of the "learn to code" types irl, if ever. If anything, i hear pushback on outsourcing and bootcamps. I wonder how much of that sentiment was actual engineers vs students online who hadn't entered the workforce yet.

Most engineers I know are OK but not at all class conscious people.

I also have some bias here, I don't live or work on the coasts so the silicon valley elistist tech bro musk worshipping cutthroat competitive culture you see at big tech is just not there. And those types tend to be the loudest shittiest dudes online.

Midwest here, most folks just treat it as a job like any other. Still won't fucking unionize though, US propaganda is too strong.

Might be nostalgia glasses + the new sorting algorithm. I've been here a while and things haven't changed that much.

What I have noticed:

  • Discussions have mostly moved from posts to megathreads, honestly this is kinda weird to me but w/e. Its still happening tho, just maybe not in the expected format
  • less trolling, due to the efforts of the admins/mods
  • less reactionary shit in general, chuds & terfs & stupidpol types get utterly decimated when trying to post here, there were definitely people that used to slip past the radar and would poison the well of discussion here
  • People here are a little less liberal (me included) after having to kill the Bernie in their hearts and minds + forced integration with lemmygrad

Like there was Best of 2020/21 with the worst takes ever. I'm looking for links to those plus the 2022 edition if anyone's got it.

I vaguely remember a few:

  • Bernie reminds me of when my abusive dad throws the pot roast at the wall when he talks too loudly about healthcare
  • political consultant white woman with dyed hair who looks like a hunger games villian and tweets like 90s era snoop dogg. I'm talking like "yo yo wiggity wack" levels of cringe
  • Person who says they would genocide 1 billion dogs to save a hypothetical baby, unprompted
  • Anti mask woman who posted a mask that looks like someone rubbed fucking Cheeto dust on the inside and says everyone's mask looks like that at the end of the day
  • hornyposting about sex w/ Beto or something

There's tons of others but these are the ones that live rent free in my head.

I have no idea what the fuck's going on most of the time unless I hear about it second hand.

  • I do not watch videos (I am a boomer)
  • I do not listen to podcasts (boomer)
  • I don't use social media except hexbear/lemmy
  • not gonna read the paper or w/e (not that much of a boomer)
  • I only read WSJ/HuffPo/Politico/CNN whatever for the laughs every once in a while

Any good sites you go to for reputable news? Blogs that are not necessarily news but are maybe about the news are good too. Lately I've been reading a lot of Erin in the Morning, for example.

Bonus points if it has an RSS feed
