Yesterday I was dreading having to work an early morning flight.

Literally in the crew van right now making a u-turn heading back to the hotel. Thanks Microsoft! michael-laugh

not to dox myself, but i work at a company thats basically tech support for a load of banks etc. and it is fucking wonderful seeing all these billion dollar companies come crying to us and telling them that it sucks to suck and we can't do shit and immediately closing their help tickets lmao party-cat duane spongebob-party party-sicko crab-party

[-] HexbearGPT@hexbear.net 50 points 3 months ago

yet somehow hexbear is still online?

CURIOUS.

[-] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

It would be hilarious if hexbear did go down and that’s how we learn it is an op

[-] n4utix@lemm.ee 44 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Can confirm, in the hospitality industry. Had issues with the credit card machines and just got a call from an airline saying they needed to delay departures for guests.

Maybe, and just hear me out: having the entire world rely on shit like this isn't... a good idea. It's definitely laughable at this point.

edit: there's a joke somewhere that the PCs are going on (crowd)strike. Someone cleverer than me, please articulate it.

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

going on (crowd)strike :kelly:

[-] PaX@hexbear.net 44 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Interesting, I didn't notice 💅

Have they tried not using hyper-centralized cloud-based services or proprietary corpo operating systems?

[-] fanbois@hexbear.net 42 points 3 months ago

Half my company is shut down. Laptops crash into blue screens after bios post and probably need to be wiped. Gotta love Microsoft. Exceptional customer service.

[-] space_comrade@hexbear.net 40 points 3 months ago

Apparently it's not Microsoft but some antivirus crapware called CrowdStrike.

[-] fanbois@hexbear.net 43 points 3 months ago

2 weeks ago CrowdStrike was just permanently taking up 30% of my CPU and kept my laptop running on maximum fan power. Apparently also due to a faulty update. Holy fuck, what is that company doing. And why is apparently everywhere?

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 32 points 3 months ago

Glassdoor posts shows CrowdStrike doing layoffs of software engineers in 2023. They made 3 billion in revenue YTD.

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago

Maybe woke did this

[-] space_comrade@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago

Middle managers in big companies that decide to use these things are fucking idiots and got sold the shitware by sleazy sales people and now they're stuck with it because admitting it was the wrong move is out of the question. Some heads are probably gonna roll after this fiasco tho.

[-] VILenin@hexbear.net 38 points 3 months ago

Microsoft goes anprim, crashes billions of computers worldwide

[-] Mindfury@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

billions must bootloop

[-] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 39 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I’m making a list of notable outages here, in the news megathread if anybody wants to laugh. Or cry, if you work in IT

Anyway, never push prod on Friday lol

Is this why the computers at my work aren't working????

Edit: yeah it is and im fucked

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Boot in safe mode

Go to Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike

Delete "C-00000291.sys"

Edit: Repeat manually for every computer on the system

[-] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

For some reason IT at my work either can't do that or are taking a really long time to

I don't have access to do that on my work computer for myself though :/

[-] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 28 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

~~Lol, thank you based god that this shit happened on my days off!~~

~~I know I'll walk into a shit storm on Monday but I don't care. I'm maxing and relaxing now~~

EDIT:

GODDAMN IT!

Here I was shit talking, and my boss just called me and asked me to come in. Yes, I work in desktop support. Yes, I'm getting overtime for this. No, I am not happy! angery

[-] MeowZedong@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 3 months ago

The trick is to always be unavailable on your days off and never answer your phone. Unless you want the overtime, of course.

[-] OptimusSubprime@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

kitty-birthday-sad I needed the OT unfortunately.

But not like this...

My fucking god. I picked up a co-workers shift this afternoon because she received a relatively minor injury but would prefer not to work, and I was thinking it would be a regular Friday afternoon.

Half the other cafes, restaurants and pubs in the vicinity lost their card payment systems and some even their ability to take cash (windows OS cash registers I guess??).

We got away from issues because our boss is cheap and has a cheaper point of sale system with a cheaper bank and a cheaper cash regjster that apparently never bought whatever Office/CrowdStrike thing that causes instant, looping BSODs and so we were operating as normal.

Imagine the amount of people that come in because our shit was working.

There is a bit of humour that my particular small business tyrant boss being a stingy capitalist avoided the fallout of the large business tyrants being stingy capitalists.

Don't celebrate so soon because your petty tyrant will never upgrade their system after seeing this shit lol

[-] Aradina@lemmy.ml 24 points 3 months ago

I've been watching the ABC coverage. It's pretty minimal, they have no on screen graphics and can't play video. Started as the RNC coverage was ending. Bless em, they're doing their best.

[-] Aradina@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 months ago

They had their first remote guest dropout! They've been covering this all arvo and that was the first. Still no on screen graphics but they did run video

[-] ihaveibs@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

I feel like every IT professional was waiting for something like this eventually. Seeing the shitty infrastructure that supports even mega corporations makes you wonder how this doesn't happen more often.

[-] supafuzz@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

the world is built on a foundation of sand. it's amazing anything works at all

[-] ihaveibs@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago

I worked for a company who had cut their IT department so bad they could not fix a payments database that handled over $1 billion in transactions annually in a timely manner. The fix was a non-IT analytics team created their own database in Access to store it in instead big-cool

And you are rewarded for doing stupid shit like that in corporate America instead of rightfully being told you are a fucking idiot.

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago

The finale plot of Fight Club but instead of using bombs the Fight Club just sits back and drinks Natty Ice while the corporations cut tech budgets until accomplishing the same thing.

[-] absolutefuckinidiot@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 months ago

Seeing shit like this makes me feel vindicated not going into IT work cause fuck id rather be shot than deal with this.

No doubt anyone with a brain was saying this could happen at any time but the “decision makers” had no interest in improving stuff cause what its working fine now and that costs money

[-] pumpchilienthusiast@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

is it possible that reinventing the mainframe and discarding decentralized computing was a bad idea?

no it is the graybeards who are wrong

[-] Gorb@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

My company is still up and running and i still have to work till midnight POG.
