If you have any questions, please ask. I love yapping.

yapLet's say we have some periodic function f. The goal is to represent it as a bunch of sine waves. This is called a Fourier series (FS).

The FS coefficients are given by

            ⌠2⋅π
         1 ⎮ -i⋅k⋅x
f̂(k) = ─── ⎮ f(x)⋅e dx
        2⋅π ⌡0

for whole numbers k. We can then approximate the original function with

  n
 ___
 ╲ -i⋅k⋅x
 ╱ f̂(k)⋅e
 ‾‾‾
k = -n

and make the approximation better by making n larger.

For non-periodic functions, we can still get an approximation! The Fourier Transform (FT) uses a continuous range of frequencies instead of whole numbers, and the sum is replaced by an integral (the inverse FT).

FT's are used everywhere, for example in signal processing and spectroscopy. If a recording contains an annoying high-pitched noise, we can apply the FT and filter the unwanted frequencies. Spectroscopy separates light into its different wavelengths. By comparing the resulting spectral lines with known measurements, we can determine which elements and molecules are present in stars and planets, for example.

idk what more to add ._.

My desire for a trans separatist instance continues to intensify daily

[–] ConfusedPuppy@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Somwhat to completely unrelated, I remember a year or so ago I went on Tumblr in hopes it wouldn't be incredibly awful on basic issues as I had never used the platform before. Terrible mistake, wretched platform.

[–] tithonis@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

Somehow, Tumblr is worse than it's ever been. Which is saying something. It's never been good. Every single person worth engaging with on there I knew before I ditched it got dogpiled and run off. I shudder to think what it looks like now.

A good platform is like a spoon

there is no spoon

Would it be like 100% trans only with no federation? Or just everyone on the instance itself is trans?

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think ideally it’d be trans-only and fully private (i.e. login required to view anything, no federation) but also somehow federated enough that we could still post here… I’m not fully sure how how exactly that would work though. Maybe two instances on one machine behind a single reverse proxy or something? Idk I’d have to RTFM pretty significantly to see what kind of support there is for something like that. It may already be readily doable without much fuckery.

Of course it’s also possible to just handle the “also posting elsewhere” part by just having separate accounts.

You can have local only communities that only people that are logged in can see.

Sick! In that case I’d think that’s probably exactly what we’d want!

[–] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

https://hexbear.net/c/transenby_liberation

is a local only community but if you want to make a new one let me know.

lemmy 1.0 will expand on that to gives you the option to ask local users to apply for entrance into a private community.

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh neat, I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks! The thing about local-only though is that a number of the calls have been coming from inside the house.

[–] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It seems like the private community would be ideal then as that gives another layer of control over who can access the space, hoping lemmy 1.0 comes soon!

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh snap yea that would probably do the trick very nicely.

At least one of the trans hexbear communities is local only know. Maybe more? I forget their names tho since I can't see them anymore

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think they're transenby_liberation and anti_cishet_aktion? I still am subscribed to them and I can still see how they were two years ago when they were switched to local-only.

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

From the looks of it you’ve got a fairly accurate picture of where they are today :-(

[–] lilypad@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If I had the money to rent a vps and have a domain name, oh the things I would do.

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I think my biggest concern is that that stuff is more on the ops side of things than I’m used to and I suspect I’d likely commit some rookie ass fuckup and get my ass doxxed or, worse, someone else’s

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Between the lot of us maybe we can find the money, knowledge, and time/energy to do something?

::: spoiler I'm not a sysadmin, but

If youre serious, I would be up for contributing labor. I'm no wizard but I admin shit at work and am up for contributing in that kind of way (just dont make me an instance admin).

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I understand you. I'm pretty much like that too. (Also I presume your netstat is my ss -tulpn)

[–] lilypad@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Damn ur quick. I edited down my post real fast cause I didn't want people hunting for my software lol. But yeah I can contribute labor.

Do you run encryptioninspace? Is pretty cool doggirl-thumbsup

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right, if we are at least two people that can do some sysadmin stuff that would be good (one of the reasons I haven't made an "open" instance cuz I didn't want to be the only admin, both sys and instance. But also don't make me a moderator too)

I do run encryptionin.space

[–] lilypad@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah, its good to always have someone available. like, being the only sysadmin is great for your own stuff but the second its open its so much pressure and responsibility. And yeaaaaaaa I can't administrate people, I dont have those social skills lol.

[–] shallot@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I’d be interested for sure!

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Porkbun is what hexbear uses for domain names, and if need be it supports cryptocurrency. Hexbear seem use OVH for their server, but they probably don't support crypto.

Hexbear seems to be "redacting" IP addresses by simply not dealing with docker nat changing the IP address?

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Just call it feinberg.net/whatever, have all of feinberg's reading materials on the site, and have the lemmy instance be at l.feinberg.net cause it works as an initial. Helps set the tone as something rooted in trans radicalism rather than attracting libs. Maybe we can finally have that transgender surgeries replacement so it wont just be on reddit

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

feinberg.net is already taken.

yeah i mean anything like .net .com or whatever

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

They are all taken.

Edit: well. There is .club .chat .cool .gay .lgbt

Could also be something similar, maybe feinbergarchive or something?

Maybe that sounds too official

[–] edie@lemmy.encryptionin.space 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah. Especially if the goal is to have a Lemmy instance on a subdomain.

~~Not sure if people can spell it, but otherwise~~ actually its just feinberg without the vowels its fine. yeah that seems OK. Its also... "weird" so nobody has taken domain names of it.

Interesting, and good to know.

simply not dealing with docker nat changing the IP address?

lol but if it works it works I guess

I gotta read some docs.
