- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

In my story, he was not really fired. But a new hire in my company was handed his computer. Seeing it was on Windows, he asked to work on Linux instead. IT told him that Windows was mandatory so he resigned on the spot.
Based af, but he didn't even enjoy the burrito he ordered for lunch :(
There's a famous story at my job about this.
The hiring team kept saying they had trouble finding designers and developers because nobody wants to work on a Windows computer.
And the owner went. "So why are we forcing everyone to use windows?"
And then one department pointed fingers at another, to another, to another. Apparently a decade ago, some IT dude got Microsoft kickbacks and left the company. The next month, the whole "Microsoft" rule faded away and now my department is running Linux laptops, the designers and devs have their macs, and the accountants are using windows.
Yeah, the guy in my story was to be a developer as well. Clearly it's way more confortable to work on Linux. The justification in my company is that the security protocols are already built for Windows so they don't want to redo the job on Linux. Handling to OS' would increase their work load.
That's a first round interview question for me

I wish I had the half the resolve of that man. I had the choice between two evils, windows and mac, which resulted in me getting a mac, mostly out of curiosity. I hate it
When I joined up at my current job, they asked whether I wanted a Linux or Mac laptop. I, of course, took the Linux laptop. The recruiter laughed and said "no one ever picks Mac."
Now Macs are the only option because the IT department doesn't want to run any tool other than JAMF.
What boggles my mind is one of the execs who was there long before I was. He selected a Mac, then used Parallels to run Windows on it.
I also use a mac at work after being offered a choice between that and Windows. I hate it. But the MacBook Pro they provide is objectively more powerful than the HP windows laptops they provide, so here I am.
I switched to Mac about 15 years ago because I started writing iOS apps and you can only do that on a Mac. As a lifelong Windows user I was initially pretty dubious, but I soon came around. Now I hate MacOS and Windows equally.
Why is that?

Why must i develop for Mac on a Mac?
You can develop the app on any platform but Apple made it so iOS apps can only be compiled from Apple devices. There's no particular technical reason I'm aware of just they've designed their proprietary compiler that way and haven't released it cross platform.
Windows and Apple both desire 100% control over their ecosystems l, including custom tooling and languages that may not exist elsewhere.
Reliance on other people's stuffeans less reliance on the OS provider. Hence why they have competing, well everything.
That's laughable. Windows does not demand 100% control over their system. Windows is a you think you can do it let's see you go ahead and do it and fuck shit up. And when you do fuck it up you'll have a much more difficult time fixing it. On Linux it's a yeah go ahead fuck shit up Good luck here's a log should be easy to fix it but you got to make it work in the first place. On a Mac it's you'll get it from this space install it in this way or you won't use it at all.

Either way I'm really happy for you that you manage to fuck up every operating system, proprietary or not. Quite the achievement.
Apple being Apple
I don't mind using a Mac at work. It's just a BSD with a proprietary UI; it's close enough if that's the choice IT gives me.
I thought that's how it would be too, but I've got to admit that the UI gets on my nerves much more than I expected.
Just think of it as OpenStep, minus the "open" part. 🤓
I started using my own laptop instead of my assigned one like a week after i started and no one cares. I RDP into my work laptop when I occasionally need windows software.
To be fair I am one of 8 people in our IT department so your mileage may vary with this tactic.
Lol in my 20 years working in IT and IT security every desktop/laptop was windows except sometimes the people who needed to do graphics things (marketing) who were on MACs. Sure we had plenty of servers on linux, but standard for end points was always Windows. And every IT was sad that that's the state of affairs but accepted it. I've hated Windows since 95 and been on Linux since one of the first Slackware versions (it was at a time when to have floppy disk support you had to recompile the kernel), but you have to adapt to your environment or else you refuse maybe 99% of the jobs out there.

I mean seriously what an idiotic thing to resign over. Almost every single court environment is Windows only. Most of them very rarely have Linux exceptions. Some of them might have an Apple exception but usually that's only for executives. I mean unless he was a dab or something like that in which case it's a little bit more acceptable. But not by much.
on one hand it's easy enough to just run Linux on a VM if that's what you want to use. On the other, I think an element some might forget is that most new hires were also applying for other jobs at the same time and often have other offers live on the table.
Good point, and just as they can fire you at little to no notice during probation, you can leave quickly too.
