!lemdroid@lemdro.id is now open for general instance discussion and feedback

Hey all! I've done a lot of database maintenance work lately and other things to make lemdro.id better. Wanted to give a quick update on what's up and ask for feedback.

For awhile, we were quite a ways behind lemmy.world federation (along with many other instances) due to a technical limitation in lemmy itself that is being worked on. I ended up writing a custom federation buffer that allowed us to process activities more consistently and am happy to say that we are fully caught up with LW and will not have that problem again!

Additionally, on the database side of things, I've setup barman in the cluster to allow for point of time backups. Basically, we can now restore the database to any arbitrary point in time. This is on top of periodic automatic backups which also gets pulled to storage both on my personal NAS as well as a Backblaze bucket (both encrypted of course).

Today, I deployed a new frontend at https://next.lemdro.id. This one is very early stages and experimental but is being developed by https://lemm.ee and seems promising!

If you live outside of the US and experience consistently long load times I want to hear from you! I am deploying the first read replica node to Europe soon, so if you live in that region you'll soon notice near-instaneous loading of content. Very exciting!

Finally, looking for feedback. Is there anything you want to see changed? Please let me know!

I don't want biometrics unlock, and 16 character is a pain to type each time.

What I'd like; when unlocking the password will be asked, but it could be possible to enter the password using a QR Code using the pre-unlock camera mode. The password would still be the main way to unlock, the QR would just be an alternative.

Issue; my phone dont want to read a QR Code before unlocking (for obvious security reason).

Does anyone have an idea if it is even possible? If yes, where should I look?

I'm on a Xiaomi 13T Pro.

I have Samsung Galaxy f12. It has a Voice recorder which was pre installed from Galaxy store. I had a software update 4 days ago and my Voice recorder is also updated.

I access it a lot and recently it is having problems. I access it mostly thru the lockscreen shortcut. I press the record button then record the stuff but when I press the save button it doesnt save the recording for a few seconds to minutes. It stops the recording but then it looks more like it froze with the play/pause button, save button and recording timer still visible. Then it closes the recording and goes back to being a big red button which we are supposed to press for a new rec, but it doesnt show me the usual pop up message on the bottom of the screen saying that my voice recording is saved as this name etc etc.

I did 5 recs tonight. When i went to check in my recorded stuff i saw nothing until a few mins when it saved the last 2 recordings only after showing this message "recording stopped suddenly. Recording is now saved as xxx" or smth like that. I cant see my past 3 recs in the folders/albums of saved recs.

I even opened the app itself and recorded thru it but the same problem persisted.

I just want to know how and why this happened and will i get my recs back through any way?? Also what can i do to prevent it? I have cleared the cache too, i have kept it updated always but still this happened.

Just noticed this the other day as I switched from Heliboard to Gboard. I have the same vibration settings on both (30 ms), but Gboard just feels more responsive, while Heliboard feels kind of clunky.

Does anybody experience the same? Can anything be done about it?

Note for Americans: here WhatsApp is the de facto communication standard. Literally nobody uses SMS/iMessage/Facebook messenger/signal. And carriers still charge 2 euro for a MMS which completely kills iMessage/RCS (if accidentally send MMS, it's expensive)

I switched phones and instead of copying manually /Android/data/media/com.whatsapp I used the new feature of pairing via qr code.

Besides that's a not very well designed feature (you need to start transfer on the old phone before logging in the new phone) because they really want to store unencrypted backups on Google drive, the transfer completed in a short time.

Maybe too fast, I was expecting at least one hour to transfer the 5000 photos 10gb, instead it completed in 20 seconds.

So I told myself, ok photos not transferred, I'll just do that manually and directly put them in the photo archive on my PC rather than keep them mixed with all the "happy holidays" trash.

I browse the old phone to /Android/data/media/com.whatsapp and... It's empty. Wiped clean after the "successful" transfer process!

Luckily I had set syncthing (the fork on fdroid, the one on play store doesn't have access to whole storage) to have a full overnight backup! On my PC I still had all the photos, almost deleted too as I noticed that I didn't set the "trash can" option

Conclusion: go to download syncthing fork from fdroid and have a safety net from mistakes like this

I have tried

  • RiMusic
  • ViMusic
  • InnerTune
  • SpMp
  • ViTune
  • Gyawun
  • SimpMusic

And in the end I settled on RiMusic which I'm really tired of, so frustrating when an app keep crashing out of nowhere.

Have you tried any FOSS YTM app that you can say with confident that it is stable and it just works?

Why not just use the official YTM app you may ask? Well so I can easily save and transfer my music listening data

Physically, the phone is the same as the consumer version. There is a difference in software and support that makes deploying this phone to employees and helping them out when something goes wrong is easier.

First off, the phone comes with an extended 3-year warranty. Also, the usual 3 years of security patches have been extended to 5 years to ensure that company data is kept safe. The phone will still only receive 2 years of OS updates, though.

But if your company has staff with a skilled hand in electronics, some repairs can be done in-house with tools and instructions provided by iFixit. The HMD Repair Hub on ifixit.com offers replacement batteries (€20), charging ports (€15), back panels (€3) and even displays (€40) at very reasonable prices. Basically, the things most likely to break can be replaced in-house. And the battery is rated to maintain at least 80% of its original 5,000mAh capacity after 800 charge cycles, so it will be a few years before normal wear and tear makes a battery swap necessary

Ad free YouTube App (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

I recently discovered SmartTube Next for Android TV to get an ad free experience and integrated Sponsorblock on my Nvidia Shield TV.

I found NewPipe for my phone but I don't see a way to connect my YouTube account to it and I guess I need to import my subs manually every time I change something.

So I'm wondering if there is an alternative YouTube app that is blocking ads (and ideally integrates Sponsorblock) for my smartphone and has the ability to connect my YouTube account like SmartTube Next does?
