A human pandemic like that would end up with at least half of the population resisting the cure.

Coincidentally, I think I might've figured a solution to the climate change.

Infectious magic mushrooms would be the greatest human pandemic. The last one, too.

This same fungal infection causes the males to have sex until their butts fall off, so I'm pretty sure some humans would seek it out.

Step 1: tell the internet cicadas contain drugs.

Step 2: ?

Step 3: guy admitted to hospital with a can of Raid up his ass.

Just read the Wikipedia entry for that fungus. I saw cathinone was mentioned, but I did not see anything about psilocybin

Neither of these links state psilocybin is in the fungus.

From your second link:

Here we report the discovery, through global and targeted metabolomics supported by metagenomics and proteomics, of the plant amphetamine, cathinone, in Massospora cicadina-infected periodical cicadas, and the mushroom tryptamine, psilocybin, in M. platypediae- and M. levispora-infected annual cicadas.

It appears that the two chemicals come from two different fungi. Or I could be misinterpreting that.

Edit: PS. I appreciate all of the content that you post. I just thought this was an interesting subject.

Wait, where's the cicade recipe I saw a few days ago?

[–] littlebluespark@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I'm not waiting around, thanks. Besides, if you start cooking while still looking for it, I'm sure something'll turn up. 🤪

Party 'til you drop apparently according to the non-highlighted sentence.

Mother Nature's equivelant of drenching vegetables in honey. "C'mon humanity, they are sustainable! For the love of Gaia, eat them..."

Aldous Huxley, renowned writer of Brave New World was an enjoyer of psychedelics. He wrote the book 'the doors of perception' about his psychonautic experiences, inadvertently christening a popular band, the Doors.

On his deathbed he had his wife inject him with a large dose of LSD. Leaving this world tripping. His death went unnoticed by much of the world as he died the same day JFK was assassinated.

... ... ...so are we eating the cicadas, or smoking them?

Not the worst way to go if you have to be slowly eaten alive by a fungus.

Not too long ago, I saw a (cruel) recipe for cicadas here on lemmy!
