This week's topic is quite programming heavy, sorry to all non programmers doggirl-gloom

https://xkcd.com/312/

yap

LISP stands for LISt Processing and was invented by John McCarthy, who was looking computation with symbols and recursive functions in the 1960s.

John McCarthy was the son of immigrant Communists (members of the CPUSA), but after witnessing the failed counter-revolution in Prague in 1968, he himself became a Republican lenin-dont-laugh.

A Lisp program consist of a few basic building blocks:

  • Symbols - basically text without whitespace, for example: +, hello123, if, nil, etc.
  • Numbers, Strings, etc.
  • Cons cells - a Pair, denoted as (cons 1 2) or dotted (1 . 2)
  • Lists - a linked list of Cons cells with the final element being the symbol nil.
    • (list 1 2 3) is the same as (1 . (2 . (3 . nil))).

As you may have noticed, cons and list are inside the parentheses, thats because a function call like f(x,y) is written instead as (f x y). This is called a Symbolic expression and all Lisp code looks like this.

(+ 1 (* 2 3) 4)
;; multiply 2 times 3 => (+ 1 6 4)
;; add 1 6 and 4      => 11

;; the names 'car' and 'cdr' are ancient relics from some assembly instructions
;; basically first and second element of a cons cell
;; or head and tail of a list
(car (cons 1 2)) ;; => 1
(cdr (cons 1 2)) ;; => 2

This in turn means that any code can be turned into a list, so that it can be modified like data. I think thats quite neat and unique among programming languages (it even has a fancy word: this property is called homoiconicity).

Functions that operate on code are called macros.

;; generate a function 'name' that adds 'value' to the input
(defmacro defun-adder (name value)
  (list 'defun name (list 'x) (list '+ 'x value)))

(defun-adder plus5 5)
;; define the function plus5(x) as x + 5
;; => (defun plus5 (x) (+ x 5)))

(plus5 10) ;; => 15

To make sure the interpreter does not try to evaluate a symbol, it needs to be "quoted". Since this comes up quite often, it gets the shortcut of ' at the beginning.

Theyre much nicer to work with than for example macros in C:

#define PI 3.14159265

this C macro just searches and replaces the string PI in the C source code before compilation and theres lots of ways to mess up, for example

#define DOUBLE(x) x + x

if x is a function call that does something else, like printing, then that message will appear twice. Operator prescedence is also not considered: DOUBLE(1) * 3 will expand to 1 + 1 * 3, so 4 not 6 like one would expect.

The last thing I want to yap about is Lisp1 vs Lisp2. This refers to the amount of namespaces any programming language has. if functions and variables are allowed have same names, then there needs to be a namespace for each.

for example in CL:

(defvar x 1)
(defun x () (+ 1 1))

x   ;; variable      => 1
(x) ;; function call => 2

is perfectly fine, while in other languages like Python or C or Scheme this wouldnt work.

Shoutout to respected comrades lilypad and sodium_nitride who are also true Lisp patriots.

Still glowing from the weekend. I had such a lovely time meeting with my bestie on saturday, spent all day yapping and nerding out and cuddling until we fell into that deeply relaxed stated between waking and sleeping coiled around each other like two kittens. It's like that almost every time we meet, at some point she just puts away her glasses and we lean into each other and make anything but each other fade out. I still remember how she held me while i lay on her breast and she gave me head scritches, how soft her skin feels when i give her belly rubs until she meows, how gently she leans into me when i cradle her face in my hands and give her a little forehead kiss to say goodbye. I don't think i've ever been this close with anybody, not even girlfriends i was with for several years. She's such a wonderful, caring, thoughtful and inspiring woman and i'm so happy to have her in my life.

Then yesterday i went to play with my new Shadowrun group. We went on a new run and things got a bit out of hand, but it turns out that we can handle a firefight with 30 people in it in spite of our group not having any dedicated combat characters and the system being the crunchy monster that is Shadowrun 5th edition. But my fellow players are ridiculously organized and have played SR5 for ages, so we actually got through with that fight in half of yesterday's session. One of the other players kept track of initiative, i kept flipping through the rulebook referencing weapon ranges and our GM made good use of the rules for streamlining rolls of large NPC groups, so that clusterfuck of a shootout was actually fun to play and felt tense and fast-paced.

having shaved eyebrows is cool, but I might like having bleached brows better πŸ€” realizing that I cant really replicate the bleached brows with no hairs... It really lights up the brow area. And drawn-on is cool, but i'm struggling to find a style that I like. Maybe for situations where a deep eyebrow really suits the lewk.

Fuck fuck fuck this electionBolsonaro's party (PL - Liberal Party) is winning literally everywhere, when they lose is to other right wingers.

Lula is ~~4%~~ ~2% behind FlΓ‘vio, Renan Santos (Brazilian Hitler) is in 4th place with ~~2,4~~ 2,6 million votes (2.3%), it's ~~mostly likelly~~ going into a second vote between only Lula and FlΓ‘vio but it's looking bleak.

In my state (SΓ£o Paulo) the highest voted Federal Deputy is Lucas Pavanato (PL - ~~2,7~~ 3 million votes), his campaign has been exclusively about how trans people are bad, how trans kids don't exist and how he's gonna "end this clownery" (or something like that).

Fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this fuck this

The only good thing this election is that comrades Jones Manoel (PSOL in a democratic filiation - 220,6k votes) and Humberto Matos (PCdoB - 39,8k) are really well right now.

EDIT: Jones, Humberto and Elias Jabbour are elected at least.

dysphoriaDamn. I wonder how much of my mental health issues are literally just how I look. This is so ridiculous. God I just need to look in the mirror and see a woman. I need to go out in society and be seen properly.

It's all dysphoria, all the time, that's what's fucking wrong. It's this disgusting, mutilated body I'm shoved into.

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

voice dysphoria
spoiler suicide

get reminded I need to voice train

get extremely depressed, hopeless, etc at the thought and understanding even a fraction of it

realize I have to kill myself to avoid it

I go back to blissfully pushing it to the back of mind

I am actually going to have to kill myself over this jesus fucking christ. Why do posts have to remind me. KMS. Nothing, nothing is worse then having your voice ruined by puberty. I genuinely am going to kill myself one day and voice shit will genuinely be the very top of my list.

Impossible to understand, impossible to do, fucking kill me. My life is genuinely fucking ruined because of this.

graphicas last night, as tonight, if I had a gun in hand I'd probably blow my head off right now.

god why did being trans have to be this for me. Why do I have to be so intensely dysphoric. Why did all my functioning and will to live have to be stripped out of me. Why do I have to suffer this curse. I was so, so close to living a good and happy life only for it to get completely stolen from me.

sex and dysphoria mention

There's 2 types of sex. Sex were you actually feel pleasure, sex that you're doing as a gender affirming ritual. My problem is that due to brainworms I really focus on the 2nd type of sex rather than the first time. Most of the time, horny is just not actually pleasurable. It's just me thinking this makes me womanly. And that feeling goes away right after the horny activities and well, that becomes dysphoric.

There's many factors going into what exactly makes me in 1 sex mode vs another. Stress is 100% a big factor. It turns off the pleasure part of sex, and leaves behind only empty gender validation.

[–] laylaeverywhere@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

sex mentionI'm lucky, I guess (thank you, universe, for letting me have some good things), because the gender affirming part is connected to the pleasure part of my brain when it comes to sex. So it's like... because of the trauma the comes with being trans, I have a kink for type 2 sex which makes it indistinguishable from type 1 most of the time.

My nervous system functions are swapped in other ways (because of PTSD) so my horniness is almost directly correlated to how stressed out I am. My emotions don't make any distinction between anxiety and sexual frustration.

Quick post Imma continue next mega

Am trynna concieve of a data type which stores numbers as lists of prime factors.

Would be fast and exact for multiplication. But too much memory usage. In a dataset with n unique prime factors overall, you need worst case, k*n bits per number (k is the number of bits used to store the exponent of that prime factor).

Adding fractions to the powers of prime factors would allow it to be very effective in some small range of numbers.

Upto 10, there are 4 primes numbers. You can use 2 bits for the denominator of the exponent (the root), allowing you to express square, cube and 4rth root (most common). A bit for the sign. 3 bits for the numerator of the exponent (upto 8th power). So k=6 bits

Total you'd need 24 bits per number.

Doesn't than suck for a system that can't even store the number 11? Well, yes, but also think about how densely packed your grid of numbers is in that small range of 0.1 to 10. Like that's almost 24 bits of information packed into that range (some numbers are bigger or smaller). If you have say, 2^20 numbers in that range, you get ~1 million numbers in that range. And if you use scientific notation you can get some juice out of this.

This number system sucks and I'm ashamed of myself

Being a mom sounds..... Nice. Like really nice. Some child calling me "mom" also sounds really nice.

[–] userse31@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

I must say Midwood Brands LLC, whoever you contract out for the cloths, they designed a very nice looking...... Actually would you describe this color as?

It's a drawstring full body "geranium" dress with a drawstring in the middle.

It's kinda an.... Orange/pink? Whatever it is, it looks very nice! And I think I look cute in it! And it was only $10 USD!

Maybe I should nonchalantly walk around the house while my mom is currently home. Pissing her off would be kinda funny lol.

I gotta go to work on Monday

spoiler cw sex

::: spoiler cw mild kink stuff

So uhhhh yeah, um, Im gonna be a scarf girlie for a bit here. At least my shirts cover my tits, cause theyre pretty red and bruised. I guess to be fair I did say mark me, and I did say uh-uh when asked if theres anywhere to avoid. So uh, no regrets but also damn I can't let my boss see this. But goddamn that was fun. I was able to avoid dysphoria by staying tucked while being fucked, having my attention put elsewhere with a video game plattformer, and then having thighhighs on that go all the way up. Dysphoria: worked around.

(I got self conscious and uh yeah I'm removing the rest of this describing what I was up to)

Doing some research projects that give me access to some archives that I never thought I'd get to see. Reading somebody's letters written 50+ years ago in their beautiful cursive is an experience I don't know how to describe. Transcending time to share if only vicariously this moment with another woman across decades and miles and miles.
