Omegaverse is something I've seen people talk about for ages but I've always been too scared to ask what it is

Is is a set of erotic tropes where people have extra genders and sexes and go into heat. It can be added to any fanfiction to add some variety and structure.

Of note there is a trope that relates to people going into heat having issues with insurance related to access to healthcare which is just such an amazing artistic note

oh so it's an american invention agony-wholesome

I saw a report of someone finding a group of japanese fan fic writers trying to understand what is even going on with the American fics. From what I saw the japanese writers could not wrap their mind around the american system and it's failings.

It's like the manosphere but with male pregnancy.

[–] Skibidi@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

This is an incredible description

All I know about omega verse is from that Lindsay Ellis video series and I think I don't want to know any further.

I'm sure that judge is still having nightmares about that case.

[–] Skibidi@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What case was she involved in?

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fascinating. How did it end? The article is from 6 years ago so I would imagine the case is over, but I wasn't able to find an update

Last year, the publisher conceded that no plagiarism or copyright infringement had occurred, and a judgment was entered against the company, which paid undisclosed monetary damages to Quill and Ms. Ellis. (Ms. Cain is now self-publishing.)

I think the later lawsuit about false copyright notices didn't go anywhere.

As the others are saying, the Omegaverse is basically a collection of tropes about a world in which people's external and internal sex organs differ^[Rather, external and internal sex organs differ at a significantly higher rate and in a significantly different way than in real life. For real-life intersex variants in which external and internal sex organs differ, see Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS), in which a person with a normative penis at birth has an underdeveloped uterus; and Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS), in which a person with a normative vulva at birth has atrophied testes in place of ovaries.], which in practice means you have "alpha", "beta", and "omega" variants of each sex, and which variant you are becomes known to you at puberty. For a summary of gametes:

| | Prader 6 (normative penis) at birth | Prader 0 (normative vulva) at birth | |

|

|

| | Alpha | ᯡ | 0 + ᯡ | | Beta | ᯡ | 0 | | Omega | ᯡ + 0 | 0 |

Although note that the types listed here as capable of both impregnating and being pregnant are in some Omegaverse stories only capable of being pregnant, and that even if you pair a type capable of impregnating with a type capable of being pregnant, that many stories also distinguish who may be impregnated by whom. Yes, that's 6 × 6 = 36 potential pairings for you to remember the dynamics of, which may vary considerably between stories! In any case, betas are usually presented as basically the "boring average people" variant encompassing the majority of people, whereas alphas and omegas are presented as Naturally Dominant™ and Naturally Submissive™ respectively, and Destined for each other. Reproductive heat also plays a big role in the Omegaverse, with heat suppressant drugs that always seem to fail at the most inopportune time due to overpowering alpha pheromones or whatever. You might also have stuff like penile knots on the alphas, and alphas might bite the napes of omegas to "mark" them as their own. So all in all, the Omegaverse is basically like werewolf smut meets mpreg. It's never been my thing — this description is just cultural osmosis with a bit of double-checking Wikipedia etc — but even with all of the Omegaverse's gender-related baggage, I have to respect it, because it clearly means a lot to a lot of people if so much collective fan labor has gone into the worldbuilding; and given the sorts of things I've read on AO3, I'm not exactly fit to cast the first stone here.

What's more interesting to me is how the Omegaverse basically started with somebody writing real-person fanfiction smut about the like lead actors of Supernatural I think, and then it just snowballed from there until now there's an actual, decidedly non-pornographic TV anime about the Omegaverse.

christmas-crab-legs You should watch SPARKLE ON RAVEN: The Life of DrillGirl; it is a very good show. {Cēterum|Furthermore} {cēnseō|I think} {iūs auctōris|copyright} {esse dēlendum|must be destroyed}.

Wow the omegaverse professor (this is actually very helpful thank you)

Isn't it the smash bros knock off with disney characters and like shaggy from scooby doo

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Okay, I'll put myself out there. I enjoyed reading shitty werewolf shit in college and was there as Omegaverse took over the scene and became the dominant thing. So I have read some. Ask away.

I love how this is still only rated M.

[–] Skibidi@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’ve never paid much attention to the ratings do they go higher than M??

[–] puppygirlpets@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

it goes General > Teen > Mature > Explicit then there's Not Rated

[–] Skibidi@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

That’s pretty cool, idk how this wouldn’t be considered explicit either lmao

[–] Krinkil2705@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

We should travel back in time and show this to Hitler before he joined the DAP. That may fix some problems.

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh this is nothing. AO3 is Pandoras box of brain rot.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

the best ones are the ones with 94 tags each filthier than the last, 300 chapters planned with 1 chapter of 300 words written. last updated three years ago marx-ok

but yea, the true premium brainrot is deeper than this

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

They got tags you can't even dream about! Let alone the subject matter
