I remember when there really weren't images because those were too slow to load.

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 2 points 40 minutes ago

Images loading pixel by pixel, line by line, took ages. I don't think I ever saw one full full-size photo for the first few years I was online.

Porn sites were a experience. I would load the first 1/6th of the image and be done. The rest was up to the imagination.

I was basically a crude LLM where I had to generate the rest of the image with minimal input.

Remember buying a "yellow pages style" book of what websites you could go to and half of them didn't work? lol

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Never had that, but I remember actually surfing the web of links between pages in the time before search engines.

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 1 points 36 minutes ago

All word of mouth back then, you would have a friend of a friend tell you about a website they visited. Then as soon as you got home you would pray you remembered the address as text-messaging was not a thing yet.

People were always asking, do you got any good websites when?

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 6 hours ago

Yeah. It used to all just come from ebaums world and Ian's shoelace site.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 13 points 10 hours ago

There are now 6 websites.

I mentioned a meme I saw to a friend of mine and it turns out he doesn’t have social media at all. He just said “The mediocrity of it…” and we went back to talking about other stuff again.

He had a point.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 9 points 7 hours ago

I just use Lemmy, fuck the technocrats

[–] Psionicsickness@reddthat.com 88 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

Lemmy is the only social media I have, it’s a peaceful life.

[–] Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 27 points 14 hours ago (4 children)

YouTube is my other social media and it's getting stale quickly

[–] Cheebus@lemmy.world 27 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

I turned YouTube history off and just watch videos through “my subscriptions”

For me it’s a game changer

[–] xylol@leminal.space 9 points 14 hours ago

I basically did the same thing but have a YouTube downloader that puts them on my Plex server. So I can watch a show then like a YouTube video and call it a night

[–] shifty@leminal.space 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I degoogled, so I don't login.

Youtube Unhook and SponsorBlock Extensions in Firefox

"Hide YouTube related videos, comments, video suggestions wall, homepage recommendations, trending tab, and other distractions.

A browser extension to eliminate distractions on YouTube, including the recommended sidebar, endscreen video suggestions, user comments, homepage related videos feed, trending tab, turn off autoplay or annotations, and more. Toggle the options through the popup to customize your own YouTube experience!"

I go to youtube website and its just a blank page with a sidebar and a searchbar. My subscriptions are just bookmarked pages of people I follow, or I subscribe through Grayjay.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 3 points 9 hours ago

I do something similar, not as many extensions and very incomplete bookmarks. Most of the time I just go through a list in my head, so sometimes I remember a channel I haven't checked in a while and then have enough videos to watch for a week.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 5 points 10 hours ago

YouTube is still amazing, you just have to ignore the algorithm, which is easy enough through subscriptions

I knew we were in trouble when Stumbleupon went down.

[–] gwl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago
[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

We need to bring that back. How did they even make money?

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 19 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I think the lack of money making was why it went down

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

That would be an amazing open source project. Nowadays, it probably wouldn't even be that hard to make the entire thing.

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

https://www.boredbutton.com/ is the closest I’ve found. Not open source unfortunately.

[–] Linearity@piefed.zip 8 points 9 hours ago

altr

What data does it even collect?

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 12 hours ago

Very similar vibes, thanks for finding that.

[–] NCSK@fedia.io 16 points 12 hours ago

you missed an opportunity to screenshot this from Reddit and post it here

[–] Bruncvik@lemmy.world 29 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I'm old enough to remember when the World Wide Web was so new it had to use the full URL to differentiate itself from established services like Telnet and Gopher.

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

Al Gores internet. It was a good time.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 18 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Isn't this post ironic, dontcha think?

It's like raaaaaiiiiin...

I love the fediverse because it filters those screenshots down to the best ones. You all do great work!

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 14 points 15 hours ago (4 children)

shit, you got images on your first websites?

lucky.

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

Yeah, but they were all drawn in Paint. Kids these days don’t have the patience to watch an image load one line at a time.

Eh, ish. It used to be only four:

Something Awful

Ebaum's World

YTMND

4 Chan

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

Didn't frequent any of them, I had several forums I frequented though

Now most forums are dead

[–] antonim@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Umm actually we also had Lemon party. But plebs like you probably haven't heard of it.

[–] Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I've heard of those, but never visited because I spent all of my bandwidth at zombocom

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

But what can you do at zombocom?

I remember watching the Netscape animation in excitement waiting for something cool to load in the browser window even if it was probably "under construction" 🚧

Haven't felt anything like that sitting in front of a computer in a very long time.
