YouTube is my other social media and it's getting stale quickly

[–] Cheebus@lemmy.world 31 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I turned YouTube history off and just watch videos through “my subscriptions”

For me it’s a game changer

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

I want to do the same, but if I'm rehearsing on my own I might be playing along with a YouTube. My music account's history is basically my busking setlist.

I really should download the songs and make a Winamp playlist

I basically did the same thing but have a YouTube downloader that puts them on my Plex server. So I can watch a show then like a YouTube video and call it a night

[–] ProfessorGlorps@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I wanted to set that up to for a while. But I don't have a home server, just a seedbox and it's limited in what I can do. What software are you using?

[–] xylol@leminal.space 1 points 2 hours ago

I'm using pinchflat on it. The trickiest part was just the naming scheme in pinchflat for the videos and the library configuration on plex so it shows them correctly.

Also I got blocked by YouTube a few times because I would pause it for a while then start it up and it would download way too many so they would block me for like a month

I degoogled, so I don't login.

Youtube Unhook and SponsorBlock Extensions in Firefox

"Hide YouTube related videos, comments, video suggestions wall, homepage recommendations, trending tab, and other distractions.

A browser extension to eliminate distractions on YouTube, including the recommended sidebar, endscreen video suggestions, user comments, homepage related videos feed, trending tab, turn off autoplay or annotations, and more. Toggle the options through the popup to customize your own YouTube experience!"

I go to youtube website and its just a blank page with a sidebar and a searchbar. My subscriptions are just bookmarked pages of people I follow, or I subscribe through Grayjay.

I do something similar, not as many extensions and very incomplete bookmarks. Most of the time I just go through a list in my head, so sometimes I remember a channel I haven't checked in a while and then have enough videos to watch for a week.

YouTube is still amazing, you just have to ignore the algorithm, which is easy enough through subscriptions

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

I was trying to find background music the other day while I did chores. Unless you know a specifc channel, there's a good chance your search takes you to Aimusic instead of music.

I've been known for having strong opinions from time to time

[–] Tja@programming.dev 1 points 7 hours ago

Why ignore the algorithm? Some of my favorite creators I found through the algorithm (suggested videos, homepage, etc). I just ignore the ones you don't like, you'll see less and less of them.

Example: A few weeks ago it tried to show me videos of Charlie Kirk, I marked them as boring and after 3 attempts it got the message and I haven't seen one since.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I have never really thought of YouTube as social media, but you have a point.

[–] Ydna@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

It leaned further into it back during the google+ days. There were feeds that showed your friends activity, comments, reply videos, etc. It's interesting that they went in other directions.
