The entire thing comes at a rather unfortunate time. He was trying to save up for a second private jet, and this is exactly why he always said it’s better to leave politics out of it.

That said, it’s shocking that a bland artist making unmemorable over produced garbage has no moral spine either.

I really wish they would stop calling him an artist. He’s a businessman, like the Zuck, like Musk and like Trump. And this is how a businessman reacts when something is bad for business.

[–] mantricx@lemmy.world 85 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

This whole thing is even more ridiculous. This backlash isn’t happening because he was silent on the genocide, he’s been silent on it for years. It’s happening because he as the headliner allowed his tour mates to be excluded due to their speech. At no point did he need to denounce the genocide, he just had to speak up internally and say “well that’s Macklemore's opinion on it and I’m not going to stifle a fellow artist's speech like that”.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well, a bunch of venues threatened to not let him play... which I'm pretty sure he could've spun into a PR boost by making a public statement about it, just like all his supporting acts did. Even for those parts of his audience that doesn't care about politics, him calling out the venue owners might direct the backlash at them instead. Hell, maybe other bands would make statements about not playing at those venues too. It would have been a bold move, but he can take the financial hit, and there's a chance at least some venues might have backed down. It would have been the right thing to do.

Like you say, he wouldn't even have to make a statement on genocide directly, just about freedom of speech, artistic expression or something along those lines. There have been other recent instances of artists either cancelling shows in solidarity or using the stage for a statement in support of their fellows. Even this kind of "middle of the road" take would've been better, and probably smarter too. Setting the precedent that venue owners can push him around can't possibly be a sensible idea.

If only shit like this came back to hurt zuck, musk, or trump. Then you realize tons of it does, but it somehow goes unoticed with them for some reason.

Oh they notice. It infuriates them that they can't mind control everyone into loving them like they have with the MAGA movement.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 31 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Seems like he was saving up for relocating to the US.

He was just trying to blend in with his pals in the local oligarchy.

[–] irish_link@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Nashville huh… I would make a joke about red states but to be honest Nashville has its progressive parts. However his money will inevitably come from MAGA supporters.

[–] goosehorse@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Nashville sucks, of course he would move there lmao

Not only did she call him out for being spineless, she also threw a solid "you're racist" in there.

“Treating some children’s lives as less worthy of outrage is racist. Silence during a genocide is not neutral.”

[–] Varesti@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree, but I wonder how many kids blindsided their parents by asking what a genocide was after this? 😆

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 weeks ago

I hope they had a good answer

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 34 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Thank you for the context. As sick as I am of watching her videos she really is based.

[–] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Who is forcing you to watch Ms. Rachel videos? Blink twice if you need to be rescued! /s

[–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Today, kids, Ms. Rachel is going to teach everyone about all the different meanings for the word “chicken.” Yay!

Ok I applaud this author, that was funny.

Can we also talk about how his #1 song is promoting heterosexuality? More than 80 % of children who heard Shape of You in the 2010s now identify as heterosexual, and it continues to air on the radio and show up on streaming services without as much as a content warning. What the fuck?

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 52 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (4 children)

One of those comments that's so ridiculous you can't tell if the person is trolling or whether they're serious

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Haven't you seen all the man × woman romantic pairings in the media and now even IRL? Now even kindergarteners are playfully kissing other kids of the opposite sex! It's a pandemic! /s

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

My mom and dad have been doing this schtick for fucking years, by now. It's like, we get it! Enough! It's barely even funny anymore!

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

So you're just going to downplay the dramatic rise in shapely women post-that song?

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It takes a while to grow those kinds of women.

I bet these are still remnants of "Baby got Back" by MC Hammer.

Also, his song "sapphire" celebrated and supported India and now there's more than a billion Indians.

[–] EntheoNaut@lemmy.ml 77 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I only heard of because of this gif

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 39 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

they must have known they were making a reaction gif when making that

[–] SourDragon@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I never thought of it like that, but after watching it loop a handful of times, it's hard to deny the possibility of the thought occurring

I swear to god I thought this was a scene from It's Always Sunny

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 60 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Typically prior to her activism, only parents of toddlers know her (like me lol). She's one of the few well educated toddler influencers on YouTube, too, with a master's degree.

Our parents had sesame Street.

We had tellytubbies

Our kids have ms rachel.

If you think about it, this isnt all that dissimilar to getting slagged off by elmo

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 8 points 2 weeks ago
[–] RobertoOberto@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

slagged off

Sounds like a British euphemism for blowjobs.

Is it a Ms.Rachel thing?

(I have no kids and haven't been around anyone who does long enough to know)

[–] phi0@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago

Yes it is lol

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 39 points 2 weeks ago

I think that would require Ed to have some self-respect in the first place.

[–] veryblandusername@fedinsfw.app 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm sure he's crying into his millions of dollars while being consoled by his highschool sweetheart wife that a youtuber said mean things about him.

[–] tortina_original@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't think you understand how narcissists function.

[–] halfeatenpotato@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago

There's certainly a chance he's a narcissist - I don't know him personally. But this whole situation doesn't inherently mean he's one. He's just an absolute sell-out coward bitch that decided it was more important to not "rock the boat" than to use his platform to back up his friend and more importantly denounce genocide.

It's been genuinely heartwarming to see so many calling him out for doing this horrible thing.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Supporting Palestine is actually a far more popular sentiment than what the rich care to realise. They just don't want to lose the wallets of tiny minority of 20% of bigots as potential customers. It's like with many businesses complying with conservative backlash but end up losing more customers and revenue for bending over. Target complied with anti-DEI measures from Trump, while Costco didn't. Guess which of the two got more customers. That's why the accusations of "go woke, go broke" does not hold water at all.
