Swede here, no one in Sweden has ever served meatballs with white sauce of any kind (no idea what it is) and dill... Highly doubt the meatball ingredients are even close to correct either.

Any food in the US that's qualified with will typically baffle anyone of said nationality.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago (3 children)

That's true in every country, you should see "pizza Americana" or "American fried rice".

[–] njordomir@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Reminds me of how Germans still have this image of America being full of cowboys with six shooters on their hips.

Fellow 'muricans: if you ever get a visitor from Germany, take them to a Wild West reenactment. They will NEVER forget.

Or you know, watch the comment section of most Spanish omelette or paella videos. I'm there on the omelette comments btw, it's not that fucking hard why does everyone fuck it up.

Hell, it's true just traveling across the US. Try "Phildadelphia Cheeseteak" a few hours' drive out of Philly. They'll ask if you want marinara.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Accurate but I was trying to expand beyond "Americans using food words wrong". (Also, "wrong" is culture purity nonsense in this context. Food and language evolve and that's fine.)

It's Minnesota, they are more scandanavian than Scandinavia, I don't trust you

[–] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

An American claiming America is better at scandinaviaing than Scandinavia, is the most American thing I've heard in my life.

[–] n7gifmdn@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

First off I'm Canadian, and secondly America isn't, but Minnesota is.

[–] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 1 points 2 days ago

First off I'm Canadian,

Wasn't expecting that

and secondly America isn't, but Minnesota is.

Minnesota is a part of America, hence my wording.

Boo, Swedish meatball sandwiches have meatballs and beetroot salad.

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

That looks so good. Definitely another Swedish meatballs I've tried. That looks 100x better.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 11 points 4 days ago

I'm guessing it's a white gravy instead of a brown gravy, so colored from cream and flour. I've only ever had brown gravy and lingonberries with my swedish meatballs, but then I've also only ever had them at Ikea which I'm sure isn't the best representation.

[–] SirHaxalot@nord.pub 7 points 4 days ago

bet it’s the same cum they put on their cinnamon buns

[–] whaleross@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

If you served this in Sweden you'd get angry side glances and passive aggressive snorts.

I'm assuming the same can be said about USA with this particular sandwich lol

Non-existent portion aside, that looks disgusting.

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 5 points 3 days ago (3 children)

As a Swedish person I have no idea what that white goo is. I wouldn't touch it, and also I wouldn't touch that bread.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 3 points 3 days ago

Yes, I think you're right, that's probably what they were going for.

So Swedish meatballs is served with "brunsås" (literally "brown sauce") which is a gravy or roux made from the leftover fat in the pan after you're done cooking the meatballs. I've never seen anyone do a white roux for meatballs. This is then served with boiled potatoes, lingonberry jam, pickled cucumber and often steamed carrots.

The gravy is however never served on a meatball sandwich! That's a completely different thing. Another user mentioned that it's supposed to come with a beetroot salad, which I'm personally not a fan of, but it would be weird if a "Swedish Meatball Sandwich" was anything other than that.

In general though I'm fine with people taking creative liberties with food, but you'll have to put some heart into it.

I mean, it's called a meatball sandwich, not a meatballs sandwich. You're lucky you got two of them! /s

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I ate at a restaurant that did this once. The kids menu had "spaghetti with meatball" which they got a kick out of.

It was the size of my fist. They served my single-digit age children like a 3/4lb meatball each. They still tell tales of the legendary meatball to this day.

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 10 points 4 days ago

It looks like there's 3 to me. Practically gluttony.

That's much more than mildly.

[–] ServantOfRa@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 4 days ago

Where to even start... Pathetic, overpriced and I doubt that the quality of the 'meat' balls meet even supermarket quality, or even IKEA. The garnish should be beetroot salad and the bread a baguette. At a minimum.

A crime against common decency, a culinary affront and a cultural offence.

[–] tigermountain@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (2 children)

So someone decided that this is the sandwich they would sell to the public and said this is fine?

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago

If it had more meatballs, sauce and such, it has a chance. But the picture is sad and dismal, why not complain?

[–] Pollo_Jack@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Billionaire stadium owner showing how much he cares about the fans.

[–] underscores@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago

that bread looks like foam

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well it’s got one meatball. Serves you right for not ordering the meatballs sandwich.

[–] CobraCommander@quokk.au 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Looks like 3 meatballs to me?

[–] PR3CiSiON@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

No, those are meat ellipsoids. Only one of them qualifies as a ball.

At this point they are trying to insult you.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 22 points 4 days ago

That's not a sandwich. That's a piece of bread that got fucking trafficked.

[–] ColdWater@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

This might give you botulism

#technicallycorrect

Meatball sandwich. Singular. One meatball.

Technically correct, but legitimately rage inducing if this is really what you get for 15 quid.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago

Frankly I think this would justify homicide

[–] Speiser0@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago
[–] razen@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

What the heck is this shit!!just make ur own at this point

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 6 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Also mildly infuriating is the lack of crosspost button so I can add this to !mls@lemmy.world — I guess it only appears when the post originates from a piefed instance?

[–] OryxAndCake@slrpnk.net 8 points 4 days ago

There's federation issues between piefed and lemmy currently. It's not like this normally.
