"The Americans are bad losers," he snapped during an interview with Radio-Canada, referring to the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar over the United States, which had been seen as the heavy favourite.

You’re damn right I am. We could have avoided building dead people into the walls of ridiculous air-conditioned stadiums, and avoided a Trump World Cup altogether. You better believe I’m salty about it.

We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."
Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history -- which is no doubt true -- but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a war-time economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.
That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks. The time has come for loyal Americans to Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. ... Sacrifice. That is the new buzz-word in Washington. But what it means is not entirely clear.

From Hunter S Thompson: https://www.espn.com/page2/s/thompson/010918.html

Still wild to me that he was publishing stuff like that for ESPN. Can you imagine ESPN putting something like that about Trump on the page today?

This idea that US law is based on the ten commandments is clearly bunk. It’s not illegal to commit adultery. Or have graven images. Or have other gods before the judeo-christian god. Or covet your neighbor’s wife. Or to ignore the sabbath. Or to dishonor your parents. The only ones that maybe you have an argument for are murder, theft, and maybe bear false witness, though my sunday school interpreted that in a way that is also not illegal. But we got all those from English common law, rather than the ten commandments. The legal pretense is so thin you can see right through it.

It’s so strange that the people who are most strident about “there are only two genders and you can only be the gender you were assigned at birth” are the first to insist that a woman is secretly a man because she’s good at sports, or a man is secretly a woman because he doesn’t watch sports. You’d think the gender essentialists would be most strident about great women athletes being women no matter what, but somehow gender is something assigned at birth that you can’t decide to change about yourself, but can be removed by a committee of old white men if they don’t like you.

It does more to handle client-side rendering than archive.org, so there are pages that could be rendered by today that were not archivable by org. Also, because of differing usage patterns, it has archives of pages that org didn’t, and even for pages that org does have, at times org doesn’t.

Deeply saddening. Archive.today was a great resource, and stored a vast repository of human knowledge. As the internet turns to slop, we need sites that preserve the history of the web more than ever, and it’s very disappointing that the team at archive.today has failed us so profoundly in our hour of greatest need.

Sound Transit tallied a record-smashing day, exceeding 200,000 boardings on Link light rail during Seattle's victory parade day. Lime added nearly 60,000 rides on its shared scooters and e-bikes.

The 2025 Alvarado ICE facility incident occurred at the Prairieland Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, United States, on the evening of July 4, 2025. Officials say that eleven individuals, some in black clothing or body armor, set off fireworks and vandalized parked vehicles and a guard structure outside the center. A person in a nearby wooded area allegedly opened fire with a rifle after local police responded; an Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck and released from the hospital a short time later. Eleven individuals were arrested in the immediate aftermath; within the ensuing month, the alleged shooter was arrested after a manhunt, and five alleged associates were arrested.

Eight days earlier, Edwards made history as the first Black woman to play for Team USA at the Olympic Games.

Edwards was one of three Black women on the ice, as Canada iced two Black players of their own in forward Sarah Nurse and defender Sophie Jaques, both teammates with the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Vancouver Goldeneyes. Nurse made history as the first Black woman to win a gold medal in women’s hockey when Canada won the Olympic tournament in 2022. She set a record for most assists and points in a single tournament in the process.

I think it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the NHL. There’s been a trend in recent years of players (especially Russian players) refusing to wear the Pride jerseys for Pride night, and the NHL has mostly let them do it. Hopefully, this influx of new pro-lgbt fans will put pressure on the league to stop canceling the games to accommodate them.

There’s a particular sound, within calls to resist, that’s perked up my ears: Joy as an act of resistance. It goes: Call your representatives and protect your neighbors, but don’t forget your whimsy. This is not a message for the status quo, for the privileged folk raising their kids to tell my kids, “If people just followed the laws, they’d be fine!”

For those of us who run on empathy, knowledge, and a sense of justice, there’s an invitation to resist and not burn out. Even as we fight, living and relishing shouldn’t stop.

I’ll save the deep dive into unmasking, masking, and humor for another day, but I cannot return to my cave before mentioning, perhaps, the most critical precursor to experiencing joy:

No expectations.

No demands.

Just me and my overgrown synapses throwing a strange party that no one has to RSVP for.

Tickets to watch this game at my local women’s sports bar are sold out. It’s gonna be lit 🔥

Canada versus the United States in women's hockey is the best rivalry in sport. The scales have tipped toward the United States, but Canada's veterans will want their final gold before this roster is disbanded.

The soccer isn’t as good in MLS as the European leagues, and the NWSL probably isn’t the best league in the world anymore, but I have a lot more fun following them because there is parity, which makes the competition more interesting every year.

Have the US scored exactly 5 goals in every game so far?

Canada, USA, Sweden, and Switzerland remain at the Olympic women's hockey tournament. The four nations have something in common that the rest of the field do not: competitive professional leagues for women.

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is seeking to add a new football/soccer hybrid field for Lincoln High School in Lower Woodland Park, but has chosen a plan that prioritizes parking over accessibility and events, scrapping a recently rebuilt soccer field and historic trees to cram two fields into a footprint that’s too small. The community has proposed an alternative utilizing a gravel parking lot to site a soccer field.

A good article, but as a millennial, I was completely unprepared for the 2 psychic damage I took from this sentence:

Even based boomerware like IRC has to play second fiddle to them.

Love to see Czechia investing in women’s hockey by starting a U-16 league. Joining the DFEL or the EWHL is probably the most pragmatic, but I also wonder if establishing international play, similar to the UWCL, might be another approach.

She was a fourth-liner at the last Olympics and nearly hung up her skates. Now Stacey is playing on Canada's top line in Milan.

I love them. Pou’s interview on Jocks and Jill’s just made everything about their marriage seem so cute.

Ghost and Flipboard are federated, so newsletters and blogs that publish there automatically create activitypub messages. It would be awesome if we could have some way to automatically add posts to a community for which posts would be relevant. For instance, if I were to move my the community for my city's soccer clubs to piefed, it would be awesome if I could create a post automatically for the local coverage here on the fediverse publishing on ghost. I'm not certain what the best way to do that would be -- allowing communities to follow other actors would mean we could have posts straight from ghost and flipboard, plus we could aggregate up various communities into multi communities (I could run one for both the men's and women's sides for all the local soccer clubs and aggregate them up into a ${city}_soccer multicommunity, and would allow us to do the migration from the legacy lemmy community cleanly (since I could follow the old lemmy community and see posts made in the old community), and would allow me to follow bot actors who post from federated sources like bluesky (for instance via brid.gy) or twitter (for instance via sportsbots.xyz), but the existing rss communities proposal would probably also make sense, especially if it allows us finer granularity on separating posts based on topic (for instance, the local newspaper sometimes combines different teams into the same rss feed, but I would want to have separate communities). It's also possible a bot is the best solution, but taking api traffic seems like an inefficient way to handle this.
