I’m old enough to have been an engineer of a pre-PS2 system. All I’m going to say.

Ooh, was it the Colecovision‽ It's the height of the art for me.
best Christmas ever
Just rolling through here like "Do not cite the old firmware to me Witch. I was there when it was written."

We are not worthy! But thank you for inspiring the next generation of us.
If 3DO you are truly goated!
Played it at my cousin's as a kid. Some motorcycle game.
But I've also got an og TurboGrafx16
don't be sad that you're old enough to have played on a real life ps2, or even ps1-- be glad that 9/11, 2008, covid, and 2 diaperman potus terms aren't the most significant core memories of your childhood
What? I had a PS1 and PS2, and 9/11 is one of my earliest memories. ‘08 was also childhood suckery.
Covid + PedOTUS is a separate generation.
Not only do I know what a PS2 is, I know what a PS/2 is too.

Ohhh, I played soooo much PS/2. It was such a blast. Could do nearly anything. My fav game may have been Win95.
I used to love playing Driver.
Tap for spoiler

PS2..Pffft. I had a PlayStation. The indestructible grey box from the before times. I played Final Fantasy VII, Driver, Silent Hill, Tekken 3, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Grand Theft Auto. Unless the power was out, you could pop in a disc, read the booklet, and play to your heart's content. Hell, if we are going to be talking old, how about playing Jeep Command or Pac-Man on the Commodore 64? I need to go back in my dusty coffin and have a nap. AND GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

Come now, child, it's time to commune with us, the deep ones. We who witnessed the 8088 and Apple II's in the computer store, the Commodores, the Ataris, the Coleco visions, we who played Pong on the Atari Home Pong console.
These children haven't even danced on a home DDR pad, settling for Nintendo and Microsoft's weak tracking methods.
"Are you old enough to have seen the console that had the most units produced over the longest lifetime of any other console, and which is still made in some parts of the world today?"
Seeing how old a youtube video is makes me feel older than this. Like I see 16y on a YouTube video I was watching literally 16 years ago and I feel old from that.
This though, it throws me into a nostalgia loop of man I do miss playing ps1 games on the ps2, spending time with my brother, buying accessories for it like the memory cards and the controllers with extra vibration or the ones with the fans in the handles. Man those were good times. Playing dbz budokai 2 and soul caliber 2. Awww man the THPS games were fuckin' sick on that. The Matt Hoffman bike games!!!!
Yea it was truly a legendary system.
I bought my PS2 from Toys R Us...
Crumbles into dust...
I have seen a PS2, never had one. I've also seen an IBM PS/2.
(I have a PS1 somewhere, too. And the first computer I ran Linux on was an IBM PS/1.)
I remember staying up all night long with a group of friends of mine. We took turns driving by Target where one guy worked and he knew they were getting a shipment of PS2s in.
We formed battle plans based on who wanted the PS2 the most , down to me, who would buy one if there were enough, but didn't overly care if I had to wait a few months to get one. Since I cared less, and am over 6ft I was dubbed crowd control. The guy that worked there drew the floorplan and showed us where the display was going. Our caffeine fueled plans had us developing different formations and routes to ensure as many PS2s for the group as possible and delay other people as long as possible. And contingency plans if a different customer took an alternate route around the crowd to get there first.
Once we saw the line starting to form at around 2am we all drove down and got in line and camped out till 6am when the store opened.
Our plans were dashed, but held in reserve just in case things went south when we learned the store manager was a levelheaded individual. He passed out numbers for each of us based on our position in line.
I was #12.
The line never got longer than the number of PS2s they had in stock, so our plans were doubly dashed as there was absolutly zero confrontation.
It was a fun fantasy for a while though. These were the same kids that had baseball bats and ski masks at the ready when Y2K happened. They patrolled the town at midnight looking for signs that everything crashed and were going to join in if they saw anyone looting. They wouldn't start the looting, but were ready with a wishlist from various stores. Best Buy was high in their priorities.
That also never happened. But boy were they ready.
I still have my PS2, and my son and I just beat FFVIII on it. He will learn the old ways
And yet I'm old enough to have seen the release of the original PlayStation and old enough to remember it
My friend brought over his PS2 to play guitar hero last year. Im not even 30 what did the tiktok attention span do to the kids 😭
I haven't played video games since the Atari 2600. You kids don't know!! Back in my day I had to walk ten miles in the snow for a hit of ecstacy
Was recently talking to a working student at $DAYJOB about LLMs and wanted to make the point that the pay-per-use model shows they're still a relatively new/immature technology. So, I likened them to mobile phone calls, which would generally cost you per minute in the early 2000s.
Yeah, she had no idea what I was talking about.
Ps3 came out in the end of 2006, but the ps2 was such a good console that it outshined the ps3 and 4 for a long time, arguably into the early 2010s. Let's say 2011.
To have seen a real one in real life, I'm not going to give them the benefit of the doubt, and say "seen" means seen and not owned or played. I'll say that means "been around one in use by a friend or family member". Kids as young as 5-7 years old can operate one of those.
So, in 2011 (yeah we're playing with huge averages and assumptions) a kid would have to be let's even say 6 years old, and so therefore born in 2005? Making the youngest person whoever this anklebiter accepts as relatable or human or whatever, to be now 21 years old.
Which like, yeah, that's a fuckin weird way to guage things? But to be fair, after going over the years, from a child's perspective, yeah it's an old console.
The counter argument is, though, that while the graphics aren't that great anymore, the gameplay and experiences are still top tier in the best ~100 or 50 or so ps2 games. That's a shitload of good games that, even compared to now, with the indie games' renaissance, have incredible value and influence.
Also, games in the past 20 years really haven't progressed as much as the 20 years prior. Graphically, maybe, but graphical fidelity is not the game part of the game, and 99% of the time, it isn't the experience, either.
Tell that little shit to go read a book.
That's just the way it is now. Humans used to go generations with minimal change. In this alien existence we've created things change drastically in just a decade or two. That said a lot of things still never change like human behavior or motivations. There's still a lot of wisdom about life someone can gather and pass down as they see fit. As they say, the more things change the more they stay the same.
Literally just walk into CeX (or any non-British equivalent) and there will be at least three on display.
I did also briefly own a PS2 Slim, but my mum got rid of it because I didn't use it enough (I still have my Wii to this day, though).
Seen a PS2 buddy, I still have a PS2. It's chilling next to my TV collecting dust until I get the urge to play need for speed underground, cabelas outdoor adventures, 007 or sims 2 castaway again!
Kid, I'm old enough to have played Playstation games in my walkman for the music.
880 german mark was the price back then.... Was released right befor the euro came....
I never really cared about history until I started recalling it as a lived experience, and I expect to stop when I no longer can.
I remember when pong came out and Atari, those were the days.
