You're a big shot trainer going to open your own gym. What will your theme be?

Personally, I'd go with a haunted house for the gym. Fake ghost pokemon props giving ppl jump scares, mixed in with real pokemon. Except all my pokemon would be fighting type pokemon dressed up like ghost type pokemon.

Ash: "Haha oh what a jump scare! That's a really fake looking Gengar puppet."

"Oh now that one looks more like a Gengar."

Hitmonchamp uses Mega Punch. It's super effective. Ash gains concussion.

Ice type gym. However, the floor's ice, and if you walk around with a Fire type behind you/use too many fire moves on the trainers before me, it cracks, and you go under the ice—to a mirror version of the gym, but with water types! Remember, don't overcomplicate. This is for six-year olds. A bit complex, but not worse than the Seafoam Islands. And yes, I'd have an Articuno (at least, if I were one of the Elite 4-equivalent rematchers, maybe a Legendary Pokémon would be unfair for a gym).

[–] gothic_lemons@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Ooohhh I like the plot twist!

[–] Coleslaw4145@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Magikarp.

A gym filled with thousands of gym trainers, before you reach the gym leader. Each with 6 high level magikarps with as much hp up and defence supplements that they can take.

The sheer scale of the amount of Magikarps you need to face will make it an immense undertaking.

At the end you get a TM for Splash.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Pokemon Dreamstone Mysteries, the first HM you get is Splash.

[–] Bougie_Birdie@piefed.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's just Snorlax, Slowpokes, and Slaking. We're just hanging out watching old movies

We don't even have to fight, if you bring snacks I'll give you a badge

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I forgot to bring any weed but there's a gang of oddish out front

[–] Poojabber@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

This is the winner. Where do I apply to be one of your gym trainers?

[–] Skyline969@piefed.ca 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My gym would start with a trainer having the latest generation Pokemon, then each one after would have ones from the previous generation.

Once you’ve gone through all generations and get to me, my team would be one high level Pokemon spamming its strongest move, and any time it got to red health I’d swap to a level 10 Pokemon that only knew HMs while I full restored my high level one.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

Swap to the lvl 1 Rattata with Focus Sash and Endeavour and teach the challenger FEAR.

[–] vortexal@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure what pokemon I'd be using but I know I'd want the gym itself to have an optical illusion theme. It would have a lot of fake walls and floors, floors that look like bottomless pits, and all of it would be encompassed in a series of rooms designed to make you feel like your walking through a maze like MC Escher painting.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago

Under water gym. No, not water like Misty. Under water.

I haven't figured out all the logistics. How will people breathe?

Seaweed mazes and cool cave grottos, sunlight filtering in from above,

There's rocks and plants and corals and shit under water. My trainers will use all those Pokemon. Not sure about ice yet. That can be in the sequel game -- the icy under water gym.

[–] Godort@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I want a gym that is entirely done in beige and warm greys, with a slight buzzing from AC and florescent lights.

All my Pokemon will be normal type

[–] gothic_lemons@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The normal meta is unassuming but powerful. Love it

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Pokémon beat you to it with Norm

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Nah, he's still got a dojo thing going. I'm thinking more Larry from SV if he had a gym.

[–] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Norm's gym is Normal-type, but it's a dojo. There are wrestling mats and wood paneling.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Dual types with no duplicates, so no type is ever shared by two pokemon, the gyms theme is the strength of diversity.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago

The Mosaic Badge.

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My gym would be the cutest cuddliest Pokemon leveled to high hell, with some level ones mixed in. Then Id give people guilt trips for bullying the weak ones.

[–] gothic_lemons@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Love the energy lol. Guilt trip is strong against all types

[–] VivianRixia@piefed.social 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Mine would be an unassuming mostly empty room with a table and comfy chair in the center and instructions to put on a VR headset.

You do and the headset activates to reveal it's a Rotom that transports you into a fantasy realm where your Pokémon team is reduced to level one and you have to fight your way through a gauntlet of wild Pokémon and trainers to quickly level them up until you reach me at the end, the electro gaming master.

If you lose, you are booted out and have to start over from the beginning, but the currency you earned remains that you can use to unlock permanent bonuses your next attempt. A ghost of you will also spawn where you fell last time and challenge you to a fight. Are you strong enough to conquer yourself and the gym?

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Your team is the porygon line and a shiny dito with mimic, metronome, substitute, and reflect.

[–] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't have a real answer but I just wanna say this question and your answer are awesome, I can't wait to see some more answers!

[–] gothic_lemons@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Thank you kindly!

[–] Apeman42@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

No type theming. The common thread is turtles. Squirtle line, Turtwig line, Shuckle, Torkoal, and I'm pretty sure there are more since Emerald that I don't know the names of.

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

Dark type. A bunch of tall goth chicks on the path to me.

[–] Dagobah@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I always wanted to have a full team of glitch Pokemon:

Ash is wading along the beach on cinnabar island when suddenly he falls over onto the hard ground. Bright light comes from all around as he looks up in shock to see a strange emtpy wireframe space.

As he gets up, a piercing noise shatters the silence, it seems to come from inside his own head. A shadowy, pulsating form fades and crackles into view. An 'arm' extends and throws a ball, completely black like a void. Exploding from within is a pokemon...? No It can't be! Ash stares wild eyed at the strange rectangular form, a chunk missing in its top right corner. It shrieks as it ripples with strange patches of incomprehensible randomness.

Ash's vision flashes for a moment back to the beach, he's staring up at his friends as he lies on the sand. They're saying something but he can't hear it. He can't speak, his eyes are portholes and he's trapped inside. Then he's gone, back to the broken liminal space.

The pokemon is approaching. Or is it? It doesn't seem to exist properly, a 2D form in a 3D space that only seems to grow in his vision. Ash looks down to see pikachu by his side, hair standing on end. They exchange a glance and he knows what to do.

The fight is a blur, each new opponent more incomprehensible and impossible than the last. As the final entity is destroyed. Ash falls to his knees, his mind shattered by the infinite cosmic chaos. The strange 'gym leader' begins to fade and the world starts to crumble to blackness. A bright light is shining. A voice emanates from all around. "Wake up ash you'll be late for school."

Ash opens his eyes and looks around, he is in bed. The world seems so much more detailed, so much more real. A handheld gaming device rests on his chest, white light flashes from its LCD screen as a pixelated title cutscene plays. A single word appears. PoKéMoN™

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

That's fucked, your reward for beating the cosmic horror gym is to get put in a world where all the exciting and magical things you base your life on only exist as fiction? That's awful!

[–] Kazel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago
[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Literally the same exact thing you said, but with actual ghost types wearing low effort ghost costumes.

We're watching the whole original series as a family and we're partway through orange islands, ghosts have appeared 3 time so far. Maidens peak has ghastly straight up trolling horny men during an annual festival. Second has all 3 living their best lives in a haunted tower and dicking around with people that try to enter. 2.5 is a continuation of that and I don't count it as a stand alone, but haunter goes with ash to become the personal jester for a Sabrina. 3 has ghastly and haunter raising a ghost ship to return their dead master's property, despite being ghosts on a ghost ship, they're running around with bedsheets on pretending to be ghosts. What do they do when togepi gets lost on the ship? Take it to their comfortable cabin and play baby games with it because ghosts aren't here to scare you, they're here to have fun pretending to be ghosts.

Carnival style haunted house, but all of the really dumb pop up ghosts and animatronics are actually my ghost Pokemon lulling you into a false sense of security before scaring the shit out of you. If they think you got what it takes, your cart diverts down an underground rollercoaster to my secret crypt style arena under the spook-house. After the battle, the cart looks like you're going to take another roller coaster out, but it diverts at the last minute, take a low 30ft roll and ends at a gift shop where ghastly sells you "I survived the spook house and all I got was this shirt" t-shirts and you take a short elevator ride to the exit which is literally right next to the entrance.

[–] audaxdreik@pawb.social 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Bugs. So many bugs.

Oh did you think bug pokemon were cute? The floor squirms, the walls crawl. I am covered in so. Many. Spiders. Approach me, let's battle!

Team:

  • Galvantula
  • Ribombee
  • Pyukumuku (shh, no one tell him)

I'm a low level gym (1st or 2nd badge), come on, we all know bug type is kinda weak -- I'm just having fun.

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I would do a bug theme too! But instead you would just walk into some weird shitty park, that has not been taken care of, and has grown all wild. The tall grasses would be filled with low level bug pokemon, but no trainers. Once you get through them, you would find a shed, that looks like it has been build out of trash. And then I would wake up mumbling and get out, looking like a weird hobo bug catcher, with a straw hat and flip flops, and holding a patched net. I would do some weird ranting speech, about how nobody cares about the nature anymore, and how all lawns should be banished and grow wild.
My team would then be moderately leveled bug pokemon, maybe a leavanny and a scolipede, and two metapods for some reason. And after you would have beaten me, I would tell you should let your lawn grow out, and then give you a badge, that looks to be a lid of a tincan, picked from a trash pile, and cut and bend into a really bad flower shape. I would go back to sleep in the shitty shed, and you would leave, unsure about how to feel about all that.

Oh, and the storyline would continue, that after you have beaten some more difficult gyms, and the plot brings you back to that town, you would find a brand new park on the site the shitty park was, with very tidy grass and all. And when talking to locals, they would just say stuff, like "The old park was really ugly" and "Oh, the homeless person? Who knows where they went". Then later in the game you would come to an orchard, with a farmer telling you, it has been taken over by pokemon, and asking can you go in and see, if you can find a reason they are there, since he is terribly afraid of bugs.
And so you go in there, and find the grass has already grown a lot, and there are tons and tons of low level bug pokemon everywhere. Deep in the orchard you would encounter a barely standing tent, and find me sleeping inside. I would only say "Zzz... The gym is closed, come back later..." without waking up. So you would have to go back to the farmer, and tell them, you think the bugs came from the old park. And they would be all "Oh... I guess they have no other place to go now... how terrible..."

And then if you would go back in the town after beating all the gyms in the area, you would find the new park has its grass overgrown, and flowers been planted everywhere, and people walking around happily, and bugs buzzing around. Townspeople would say stuff like "I did not realize the wild grass could be so pretty!" and "It's good all the bugs have a home again". And you would find me sleeping in a brand new toolshed, still looking like a homeless person and saying just the same thing about the gym being closed.

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Pc visiting your gym move half speed because of all the spiderwebs you keep running into.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

All food based Pokémon. I think that was a gym though? Lady with a cafe though, had a fidough maybe? Me and my Pokémon would be just trying to have a garden, give out food to travelers. We'd all be objecting to being a gym leader lol.

[–] Crankenstein@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Giant terrarium. My pokemon would be reptilian analogues like Ivysaur, Feraligatr, Sandaconda, Serperior, Salazzle, etc...

[–] amio@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Cork board and lots of string. My gym gimmick would be sane type composition, which was not much of a thing in the three gens plus change I played. I'm writing this as a casual who, when I replay this, still use 99.9% straight damaging STAB moves and just don't intentionally hamstring myself with the picks. Pokemon battling is apparently very deep, but most of it still feels like doggy paddling. If you want to do "clever" things you need to go out of your way to not wipe the enemy out too quickly, and is it really clever then?

Besides, Pokemon writing/characterization/whatever being what it is, e.g. "super nerds" use poison for some reason, instead of using the purported super nerdery to, y'know, pick a team with more than 2-3 types total in it. People in-game even mention type composition all the time, because exposition, and then even the Bestest Guys in all 3 countries mostly don't give a shit.

So without putting together any actual teams or anything, the idea would be essentially minmaxing based on type strength and weakness. Possibly my player-POV "however many types I can slug with a STAB" or the inverse "however many types I can guard against". It doesn't need to be super strong in an objective sense but would make sense late-ish in the game.

[–] Jumi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

My favourite type is fairy so it would be something pink and comfy. You come in and rest and in the end don't even want to leave. Maybe some kind of café

You want Snorlax.
