I reach for the margarine shelf personally.

A.) I'm incredibly lazy and very much enjoy how margarine is nice and soft even when straight out of the fridge.

B.) I kinda prefer the taste tbh.

both exist in vegan variants.

I would argue there are decent alternatives but truthfully I only tried vegan margarine. Which was totally ok

[–] userse31@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Isn't all margarine vegan as it's synthesized from vegetable oils?

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’ve seen some brands that use milk anyway because fuck you

[–] whisp@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The amount of food that shouldn't contain milk but does is also a joke.

[–] userse31@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Don't get me started on how we force milk down the throats of student. (Or.... Well I guess you could get me started.)

"Oh what's that? You want water instead of milk? Well fuck you, pay for it loser!"

Really annoyed me back when I was still in school. And I'm lactose tolerant! I just.... Stopped liking milk as a drink.

[–] whisp@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh yeah i've always hated the taste too. Cutting out dairy helped my intolerance, I get less acid and digestive issues.

[–] Poutine@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Almost all of them sprinkle in a little milk powder specifically to spite me.

Just dropping in to say you absolutely can leave butter out at room temp for weeks at a time and it'll be perfectly fine. Been doing it my whole life. Never once had it go rancid. Don't know what a butter bell is, but I do put it on a tray and keep it covered, but that's all.

Earth balance is an acceptable vegan margarine/butter substitute for most applications

[–] EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How do you prevent cats from eating it? Unfortunately the "don't have cats" method isn't gonna work for me.

[–] trabpukcip@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Does not work, our cat would just knock the lid off. :(

[–] trabpukcip@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

Technically it was this one. The lid sorta suction/friction fits to the base

Cold butter is too annoying to try to spread on a piece of bread so yeah, I just use margarine. I do always keep butter around for cooking and baking purposes though

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Ever use a butter bell?

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I use butter/ghee for baking/cooking, I don't use it as a spread on bread/toast so I don't need to worry about leaving it on the counter. I grew up in a margarine household, I made the switch when I grew up & got into baking and I just can't go back. Butter just makes baked goods taste better.

Here's a tip: anyone can make delicious brownies from a box, just sub water with milk, use melted butter instead of oil, and toss in some instant espresso powder & some extra vanilla extract. Takes basically no effort & it improves them immensely

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

instant espresso powder

stooooooop for the love of god stooooooop

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

? What's wrong with espresso powder?

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

don't put coffee flavor in stuff

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

You don't put enough to make the brownies taste like coffee, just a dash or so, but it really adds to the depth of flavour. It does make the batter taste like a coffee crisp though, which is an upside personally but not for everyone

Depends. There's a very good, very butter tasting vegan "butter" (it's margarine) that I use a lot nowadays. All depends a bit on what's on sale too.

Often we use a margarine that is a mix of butter and oil, not sure what is is techically. I've also made my own margarine from butter, oil and water and it's very easy to make and pretty nice. Having something soft for bread is preferred, but I tend to cook and bake with olive oil, removedseed oil or butter.

The most neutral flavor vegan butter I’ve found is this one, which is partly coconut oil:

Otherwise I don’t mind the other brands like Flora. Some are above 70% fat, and are much more appropriate alternatives than margarine to dairy butter.

I'm not a huge fan of Keiju or any of the other old school margarines, typically using Oivariini.

But the vegan stuff is great. I also bake with it when making stuff fully vegan, because it's very nice tasting for stuff like a good vegan carrot cake.

This is the stuff:

It's made from vegetable oils, including coconut and shea. Plus oat milk and stuff, genuinely tastes like butter to me.

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

I will pick one up next time I’m in the store, thanks!

tallow

jk, I like to use margarine

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Olive oil cuz vegan and not wacky nasty flavor that margarine sometimes have in some uses

That said, I'd love for butter to be vegan cuz I really miss it lol

[–] sovietknuckles@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Algae cooking oil because it's vegan and 75% lower in saturated fats than olive oil. It's virtually all oleic acid, an omega-9 that is the main component of olive oil

[–] meatballs12345@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

Olive oil has its own tasty flavors that should not be forgotten.

If you really miss butter flavor, you can add some Flavacol to your vegetable fat of choice. Its the industry secret for that yellow dust on popcorn: https://shop.gmpopcorn.com/products/color-free-flavacol-2419. Its vegan too :)

I don't like margarine because the 1 time i made soy buttercream icing the sweet taste of the soy has become very apparent

I don't like butter because i started getting that bourgue Irish butter and other butters just seem inferior

Fun fact about the butter they buy at my work: it's 50% margarine! We literally buy margarine for vegan shit and 50% butter for nonvegan shit

[–] woodenghost@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

For bread margarine, because it's vegan and healthier than butter, even the bad margarine. If you choose one with good fats, even better. The taste can also be good, but it varies. Also there's special margarine for baking that works similar to butter and it can taste similar too, of you want that. For cooking: olive oil or other oil.

[–] Majestic@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Butter. It’s not the healthiest thing so I don’t mind more trouble spreading it on bread out of the fridge as it’s not a daily use item anyways and it usually softens enough within a few minutes I can carefully slice a little off.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Margarine because im-vegan.

Whoever is able to get animal-free dairy products going should be given the Nobel prize.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Vegan "Butter" is really good.

[–] pucker4676@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

How can you tell if someone is vegan? :D

[–] RandallThymes@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hahahahahahhaha so funny oh my god this is hilarious

[–] pucker4676@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

Tough crowd.

I’m a butter truther. Got a butter bell which uses a bit of water to keep it sealed from mold and keeps the temp pretty steady so it’s nice and soft when I want to use it. Highly recommend

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Butter for any cooking application, but margarine for any reheating situation, especially corn and pasta

[–] RandallThymes@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Coconut oil and olive oil mix. Just kidding I can’t afford that combo.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

For general cooking it makes almost no difference but to me a bread with margarine or potatoes with margarine is pretty much inedible but quite tasty with butter instead.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago
[–] Castor_Troy@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Margarine because it's vegan.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

coconut oil

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would rather eat nothing than anything with margarine. It tastes like the underside of a cafeteria tray in jail.

Buy a butter bell.

[–] userse31@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah, I know what butter bells are, but uh.... Well.... I'm lazy lol.

Also I have this weird anxiety at the back of my mind over butter staying at room temperature over multiple days. Probably a result of growing up in a culture of refrigerators. Probably also a completely unfounded anxiety too.

[–] StillNoLeftLeft@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

If using butter for bread I've just always kept it in room temp in a little sealable box, it doesn't go bad. But the butter we use here is always cultured, afaik butter in the us is not so I would assume it might go bad easier so your anxiety might be valid.

Same with eggs, they are not washed here so I just keep them on the counter.

Making cultured butter isn't terrible hard though, have made it a few times. Just takes time.
