You take those traitorous words back, yank

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, Hank just wants to live a simple life in his corner and isn't actively trying to look for ways to make other people's lives worse. He has his culture clash moments for sure, but he's not looking to get outraged.

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 8 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

What the hell did King of the Hill do wrong?

Hank is a snowflake?

[–] immutable@lemmy.zip 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I like King of the Hill and I've rewatched it a dozen times.

I think the biggest problem with the show is that Hank Hill’s values are rarely challenged with reasonable alternatives. There are a number of episodes where his foil is a somewhat ridiculous straw man.

And so you end up with Hank Hill who is outwardly conservative in his politics but pretty moderate and liberal in his personal views. But he can’t embrace liberal politics because a couple times a season they will throw out some absurd liberal that is failing to parent correctly or live right and reaffirm the correctness of conservativism.

If republicans acted like Hank Hill I’d have not problem with them, but they think they are Hank Hill while being Cotton.

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 4 points 7 hours ago

I think they just don't outright spell it out for people but Hank is routinely proven to be wrong and sensitive in his own way. His ideals are constantly rubbed in his face.

He's American, respects freedom, wants conformity so much so he judges others for simply using a different heating source.

He thinks people should handle their shit but is massively insecure.

I can see how people miss it but he's literally the biggest snowflake ever and Bobby who I think is the shows counter to Hank is routinely the toughest cookie in the room. Pretty immune to judgement, confident and largely capable of punching above his weight class in situations most people think he wouldn't

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

He's one of those kindhearted conservative Christians. Hank Hill never would have voted for Trump!

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (3 children)

He turned on W. Bush because he had a weak handshake. I can't in any realm imagine that Hank supporting Trump.

But then again it seems like the newer seasons try to avoid the wider national politics. Not that the original run did that much to begin with, but it'd do it a few times.

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 1 points 3 hours ago

I mean sorta dale is like directly an antivaxxer

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago

Exactly. Hank's what we wish conservatives were. What they really are hasn't changed, but it's become much harder to delude ourselves.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

I could only make it a few episodes in and had to quit when Dale got way too real. I gave up when Hank, who had proven to be a pretty bad father, couldn't get past Bobby successfully following his dream because he didn't use propane.

But Hank does strike me as way too conservative when he practically creamed in his pants at the Bush library and him losing his mind because the city made the intersections safer...by changing what Hank was used to

[–] deft@lemmy.wtf 8 points 13 hours ago

"He's from New York Peggy.."

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 13 hours ago

His stance on propane and propane accessories contributed to global warming.

King of the Hill is absolutely satire.

It's kind of treated like the Colbert Report. Only brain dead idiots took it at face value and the jabs at conservatives sailed right over their heads.

[–] Vegan_Joe@anarchist.nexus 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Colbert Report was a pointed jab, and obvious satire. King of the Hill almost had a loving admiration in it, without the implied harsh critique or judgement that satire normally holds.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

King of the Hill is a show that understands Texas culture in a way that really requires you to spend time in Texas to understand. It's the little details.

And spending time in the Dallas Area, specifically, it's eerie. The culture, the architecture, the personalities. It's amazing satire.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I definitely agree with this. It had more of a self-mocking feel to it, like any redneck would find it funny-relatable far more than they would find it satirically critical.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It’s more like a slice of American life in Texas only exaggerated a bit.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 35 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Gi joe was to sell toys. King of the hill is satire. I watched both of these shows, and I’m a leftist. So it can’t be the shows…

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Y'all basing your adult politics off a toy commercial?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

no, i'm basing them off a song with snapping in it. you a jet or a shark?

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

All my political views come from Street Sharks.

My politics are generally all based off being a dwarf living under a mountain and ignoring the realms of men.

What's fucked up is we (as a country) had almost fixed this like 50 years ago.

It's just public education, and we were going in the right direction till "no child left behind". But Obama nor Biden did anything to salvage public education in their terms.

I don't think people realize how many 70 year olds are walking around with zero education, so they can't understand why we started getting 18 year olds that act like Boomer maga.

It's not that they're stupid, they're just uneducated and unsocialized. A functional adult takes work to produce, and if society doesn't pay for it, no one else does except nepo babies.

And if the nepo babies only get socialized around other nepo babies...

They won't think of our kids as people.

It's been happening for a while, but we're running out of time to hit the brakes. We need to fix education/socialization/ethics while there's still some people who realize there's a problem.

[–] Vegan_Joe@anarchist.nexus 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Having moved from an urban to a rural area, I can anecdotally say there is more to it than just education (though that certainly may be a factor).

Universities scare the conservative faction because they think they are hotbeds of indoctrination, but in reality, the openness people and new ideas occurs largely through socialization, not from any curriculum.

Rural areas rarely encounter that degree of interaction with that variety of backgrounds and beliefs. It is embarrassing to be ignorant of the outside world when you are socialized with so many people that seem to know more than you.

Once your mind is open to the wider world, a lot of the smaller beliefs have to be shed. I believe that is one of the reasons that one of the strongest variables associated with political persuasion is a university education.

It's socialization, not indoctrination, and not just a matter of education.

Having moved from an urban to a rural area, I can anecdotally say there is more to it than just education (though that certainly may be a factor).

I got an uncle in his 70s.

He went to k-10th (stopped there) in a one room school house, that had an outhouse.

His "grade" was him and a girl 2-3 years younger than him, then there was a few much younger kids later.

He is alive and voting, and won't miss midterms.

I think when I talk about "rural", people might not be understanding how "rural" America was and to a lesser extent still is.

Like, I don't think people realize how modern school buses as a concept are...

It's only been about 50 years, which is most likely why we saw the 90s boom than whatever the fuck Bill Clinton was doing.

1995 was 20 years after we started really educating everyone. And we saw a bunch of innovation and good times.

2003ish was No Child, and 12 years after that we got trump. Shits worse than before because now the only ones getting decent educations, are wealthy privet school kids. Which a wealth divide should obviously be worse than the prior geographical divide, but at this point I might as well mention.

[–] tormeh@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

How did No Child ruin education? I thought it was just national standardized testing?

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 7 points 20 hours ago

I don't know nearly enough to give a comprehensive answer, but a huge factor is Goodhart's Law: when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good metric. The focus on standardized testing, and tying school funding to performance on those tests, shifted curriculum from actual education to teaching the test. Test-taking strategies become more important than knowledge, and what little knowledge remains is focused entirely on the topics that appear on the tests.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 20 hours ago

We started teaching kids how to pass tests, instead of thinking critically and annswering creatively (unless you were in certain schools). It also coincided with laptops and iPads becoming a big part of school time.

Charter schools also arrived around the same time and that’s a whole other can of beans.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

King of the hill probably saved people instead of turning them.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

My one friend growing up who is police, he is the sweetest dude. I trust him with my life. He's about as leftist as I am, just his dad's police, his grandad's police, ect ect ect. You can't really change systems when everyone in them believes different than you. Like the lady at the farm two miles down the road was an astrophysicist before she joined the police force. Got injured, now she runs a farm. She's cool as fuck. Just, you have to do bastardy things on the job.

Right! Point was, my friend, we'd sit around the lunch table doing king of the hill impressions in high school. He had the best Dammit Bobby. I attribute a lot of his current sanity to KoTH

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

You can't really change systems when everyone in them believes different than you.

But that's the only time you can change systems.

I know what you mean though. When I was in the military, I heard some crazy conspiracy theories about how Obama was turning the country communist and he did all these steps that proved it. Yeah I knew he was an idiot beforehand but after that I just disregarded his opinion about anything.

Check out Operation Jade Helm if you want to find out what the overthinkers believe.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

i was there in 2009ish and we were speculating about deepwater horizon turning into a fire-icane. you know, when a hurricane picks up so much spilled oil that whoopsie poopsie now it's on fire. i mean while we weren't gossiping about the 2009 version of jade helm. shit was crazy. I did get to take part in the dildo protest tho. texas is fun if you know where to look.

so, uh, we got one of those fireicanes to look forward to in the future i'm sure tho. that's fun.

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh dear, he is going to be really upset later this year when they make sure he has less.

He knows the Democrats would have taken more so he’ll be happy with what he has left.

[–] AzuranAurora@piefed.ca 3 points 1 day ago

If we didn't have GI Joe, we wouldn't have FenslerFilms. And that would be unacceptable.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

He is too stupid to realize that he is "others" if he doesn't kiss Republican ass.
