Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

“We have great wars. Some say the best!”

[–] this_1_is_mine@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 days ago

I don't get it, how do all these countries' governments, that we're told are so hated by their people, just handing out guns to their people? Don't they know our news tells us their people want the ability to rise up? Aren't they reading the same news we do?

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 52 points 2 days ago (2 children)

People could rationalize it like "they are probably just arming the narco gangs." Or that the news in authoritarian commie countries is a mouthpiece of the dictator/party and so they just assume any positive news is made up.

‘They are living under an authoritarian regime, if they don’t fight against the liberators, they will be executed (during a major armed conflict)’

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

I saw some really racist stuff about Cuba arming black people

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

Communism is when no bullets.

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Oh look. It's what the U.S. claims to have done. Except when the U.S. did it, it was mostly to genocide indigenous folks and preserve slavery.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 62 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Mar a lago is within drone range of Cuba

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 25 points 2 days ago

The US are gonna use this as an excuse to massacre civilians, mark my words

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 82 points 2 days ago (1 children)

no excuse was ever needed. "military aged males"

[–] egg1918@hexbear.net 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Their military aged males, our children kidnapped from tanks

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 57 points 2 days ago

I'm so depressed every time I hear of the fascist USA meddling in Cuba. Death to Amerikkka

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 60 points 3 days ago (1 children)

which they believe is imminent.

Believe is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Trump has made open threats.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

IIRC the current strategy is to force them into accepting "aid" that can only be distributed by "religious" organizations. Not that the Trump admin hasn't been making those threats. They were just hollow. Most Cuban americans dont want to see the destruction of Cuba. This just makes those threats more hollow. The blockade is still the real threat.

BURN IN HELL KHRUSHCHEV TRAITOR TO THE INTERNATIONAL PROLETARIAT AND THE WORLD REVOLUTION ROT IN HELL

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 48 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ugh, can we not?

Edit: Invade Cuba I mean.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 42 points 2 days ago

When you don't want to invade another peaceful country and the president gives you "the look".

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I really always emotionally attached to cuba. I have no practical means to affect this but it makes me very sad

[–] Lenins_Dumbbell@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 2 days ago

Revolution is painful. Protecting it even more so. I think Cuba was able to do something no socialist project could do to the same extent: teaching people through education why Socialism is important.

Contrary to Western propaganda, Socialist projects in the past didn't do nearly enough propaganda. So their populations never thought of the pitfalls of capitalism, and reactionary ideologies festered.

Even if Cuba's immediate future is troubled, have faith in the will of her people. They've done incredible things before. They'll be leading almost all of LatAm into a better world

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 44 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Framed as spooky and scary. But if this was the USA preparing from an invasion of China, then cool, based, good, heroic.

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 58 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It is spooky and scary in the sense that these people shouldn't have to be put in this position. Fuck america.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 36 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Indeed, I just mean like your average dipshit burgerbrained American sees this and is like "oh scary they want to shoot our troops!" instead of "what the fuck why are you invading ANOTHER fucking country?!"

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Just yesterday some dipshit told me he defended our community by being in the U.S. military. So I called him a baby killer, and now half of my neighborhood hates me. Even though once a week my comrades pour in and we literally Food-Not-Bombs them some of the best food (by their own words) they've ever eaten.

One of these days I am going to die of irony poisoning.

In the US half the population is better armed than most militaries to begin with.

Here's hoping they secretly kept a nuke around

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 33 points 3 days ago

It's OK! Our Lawmakers would NEVER let us go into a BUNCH OF DIFFERENT WARS in an Election Year! That would be STUPID!

[–] ColonelKataffy@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

huh i haven't read MINI MANUAL OF THE URBAN GUERRILLA in a while

[–] Varpeggio@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Where can I find this? It is imperative that I avoid it.

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I can't say what I REALLY want to, the admins would shoot me down. This world is fucking unfair.

If you live in the US of Ayyylmao, speech that is even mildly attributable to a morally upstanding individual is punishable by death, or prison time in some instances.

The panopticon ensures we all say the good and moral things. I love DJT. I love Elon Musk. I love Addelson. I love capitalism. jokerfied

Millets plus rifles beats planes plus bombs when there is political will.
