Dependence & Withdrawal: Because of its high potency, it carries a severe risk of physical dependence. Stopping chronic use triggers a rapid-onset, intense opioid withdrawal syndrome that requires professional medical detoxification.

gas station pills are hilarious. somebody really should do a documentary or investigative journalism writeup on the whole logistical process, from the birth of an idea "RHINODONG MALE ENHANCEMENT XXL", product development, legal consulting, marketing, sales and dropship logistics. i want to know who is behind these things, where they are made, the mark-up, and how the shit they end up where they do.

fwiw John Oliver did a recent piece on them for his HBO show a few weeks ago: https://youtu.be/mRZqHzDG_c8

Not really a long form documentary but they tested some, went to a trade show, etc

jesus, this was eye opening. i knew it was completely fucked up, but it's so much worse than that. i'm glad they recorded some of the assholes too, the profiteers.

i had assumed they were mostly bunk, but holy crap so many are full of even controlled, active ingredients in concentrated dosages. and the labels are complete lies about contents.

i know there are a ton of independent gas stations and it would be hard to police those, but in the comments someone pointed out how when they and their manager didn't put out the pill displays (or tried to obscure them) at work because they're "dangerous", corporate/district managers came down on them. the whole thing is structured to let those making the most money point the finger somewhere else.

that bit about family fortunes being built on blood almost makes late-night television worth watching

So supplements are regulated by the fda by complaint. So if I release a supliment containing live rattlesnakes that's fine. They will look into it when they get a complaint and not before. Supliments are presumed safe and innefective. They are usually innefective so that is okay. What happens with gas station boner pills is that they buy vigra byproducts and sell them in the pill. Some times they work, sometimes they have too much, sometimes they have too little. The quality controll is poor because they intented to sell them for a few months untill they get shut down and then reopen under a new lisence to avoid fines. I once saw a man have a small heart attack because they were to strong. His wife was with him in the hospital just smirking quietly right behind him.

His wife was with him in the hospital just smirking quietly right behind him.

His wife absolutely told him to go to the doctor and get a Viagra prescription, and he said 'the gas station has them for $4!'

My man put his life on the line to make his wife smile. It is beautiful in a way.

... There's a whole ecosystem there and it's pretty fucking hilarious. The raw ingredients are come from China or India mostly, the manufacturers are all over the place, and there's actually a thing going on where no one wants to be the one selling the WIENER BONER MALE VITALITY supplement that doesn't work so they're all at least a little bit overdosed.

I don't have time to look for sources but it's out there. Health Canada has a list of actions they've taken against has station boner pill makers.

I don't know about the other gas station supplements. It's changed a lot since it was sketchy fake weed and ephedrine pills/bath salts.

Yeah, I need to know what they're packing in those Intellifuck gas station dick/intelligence pills that are making me so smart

[–] Omegamint@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago

You will absolutely get absurdly addicted to these, just fyi. They really should not be sold, honestly.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago (4 children)

wow that's incredible. also makes me wonder if my sister is on something similar. the rest of the family reports she's always going to the gas station for something but nobody knows what, and she suddenly stopped drinking with seemingly little effort after hard drinking for 30+ years. seems likely it would be something like this

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

Shitty opium is better than drinking but this not likely to be leading in the direction of quiting. One of thr street fight radio guys quit drinking like that but the other relapsed I think.

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

I stopped drinking after taking kratom, so yeah. I have to say that my health improved by switching to kratom a few times a week instead of drinking all the time. Kratom is already very addictive, so making a concentrated pill of one of the main active substances and selling it at gas stations seems like a really bad idea.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

Might be, should probably find out as these pills are not clinically tested

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

maybe. I'm super happy to hear she basically stopped drinking, and I saw it for myself while I was briefly there a couple weeks ago which was incredible. She seemed fine and all, but if its kratom or whatever other shitty gas station substance who knows what that could be doing to her. It's not like it's going to be super safe either.

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Kratom is an atypical opiod, and it's generally pretty safe so long as you aren't mixing it with other drugs like alcohol. The risk is much much less than regular opiods because there is a ceiling effect on how much it effects you. With 7oh they are concentrating the active ingredient and removing all other alkaloids, so it's more problematic.

One of the issues with regular kratom is that the high you get is relatively minor, so people think it's relatively benign. They start upping their dose to chase the high, and then when they need to quit they can end up going through typical severe opioid withdrawals. With 7oH there is a more intense high and people will run into the withdrawal problem a lot quicker.

If you want an overview on some of the nuances, the youtuber Metta Beshay goes into it.

From personal experience I would say being an alcoholic is much much more dangerous and detrimental to your health and well-being, compared to kratom. I can't vouch for 7oh.

I'd recommend getting away from gas stations and find a supplier online to someone who isnt planning on quitting tho

spoilerIts crazy, but so is comparing kratom withdrawal to morphine/heroin/oxy withdrawal or god forbid methadone withdrawal even codeine withdrawal is worse, not that I'm condoning it

[–] Sinonatrix@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Supposedly a lot of the new stuff out are synthetics designed to mimic the active ingredients of kratom and a lot more potent than just taking capsules of the processed plant.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Got a link for what analogues are being sold?, I know most of these pills are synthetic 7-OH-MIT but that is the primary active component of natural Kratom

I think it's pretty individual. It really does seem that some people are getting intense opioid withdrawal symptoms from krat. I've gone on and off many times and its unpleasant but nothing more. It makes sense to me because the actual effects seem the vary a lot by person.

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Any opioid withdrawal is intense and horrible, but a week at most withdrawal of kratom is nothing compared to a month of more intense symptoms from methadone wd

Youtube algo recommended me this channel a few times. He's a licensed pharmacist and he reviews gas station pills. He made a review video for "perks", 6 days ago. I haven't watched it because it's age restricted and I don't use an account.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

Licensed pharmacist in 4 states! It used to only be 3 but he recently got licensed in another state.

He's a very well educated guy who seems to just be a chemistry/pharmacy nerd who loves to investigate OTC pills. These are entertaining videos with very high ASMR value. I haven't seen the "perks" review but I saw a previous gas station pill test (Black Widow 25) which was pretty entertaining and educational.

If you don't know yet, stay away from gas station pills. It's so much worse than it was a few decades ago (and it was already bad then). Nothing good is in them and they're constantly side-stepping regulations to bring sketchy shit to market.

[–] NewOldGuard@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

I watched it, they found the advertised kratom derivatives but also trace amounts of other compounds that suggest potential synthetic opioids in the pills too. So sketchy
