Bigger phone maybe?
So a tablet?
You don’t understand the issue
i have too many hobbies, so I don’t do any of them and instead just ✨PHONE✨
I'm not a procrastinator, I'm just a temporarily embarrassed polymath.
Instead saying your hobby is phone, say: my hobby is collecting dopamine.
That's everyone hobby, to varying degrees of success.
I'm a huge fan of collecting hobbies. It keeps me curious, and every now and then one sticks pretty hard.
But to keep yourself sane, you also need to accept that you won't master most hobbies you dabble in. I am a pretty good woodworker. I do some pretty neat 3D printing projects. I'm a decent gamer. I'm fairly good at the shotgun range. I used to be pretty good at racquetball. But I'm not great at any of it.
The only one I got really good at is scuba diving, so I actually picked up a side gig teaching scuba and underwater photography at a university. Underwater photography gets pricey fast, but now I can share the joy of it with students while letting them use my camera gear while writing it all off.
I agree, but i also feel like theres some poor phrasing on OPs part. Rarely, even if you have problems, is your hobby just "phone". A phone is a tool, what are you using it for? If your answer is social media, thats your hobby, not "phone". People absolutely will bond through social media, as difficult as i personally find it, so social media does unfortunately count as a "hobby" i really cant doss beyond it being basic. Gaming on your phone is just as valid a use of your phone, and id have a lot more respect for gamers. Unless theyre playing the match 3/CoC games. Mobile does have good games, but theyre hard to find.
Welp, that's still fairly broad.
Ere-yesterday I spoke with a guy who's hobby was just that. For about an hour.
So... he daily drives Fairphone 5 with Ubuntu touch, but played around with just about any distribution.
When I asked him about PostmarketOS, he suddenly pulled out a laptop, rummaged through his backpack, finally pulling out a PinePhone, and went on to reflash it from Sailfish OS.
Unfortunately, his laptop suddenly decided it doesn't feel like writing data to any external storage.
I didn't know you can just access the storage of PinePhone directly. That means I could just easily do full backups and not worry about bricking it.
Though he doesn't recommend it due to being expensive and under-powered. Both of us independently agreed on Oneplus 6 being best candidate for PostmarketOS.
Okay for thousands of people, phone hobby
Edit: which is literally dozens
It means they are enthralled by social media as the algorithm consumes countless hours of their free time.
"Computers" but same.
Used to be, you could say "computers". You were then branded by your peers as a fucking weirdo but it was a hobby.
Can you fix my printer?
Can you check if I got a virus? My Hotmail keeps emailing viruses to people.
I’ve got this amazing business idea, I’ll be the idea man, you just have to make it
Also branded as "my personal tech support", true.
I remember a time when a friend came up to me in middle school and asked to “fix an issue with Microsoft word” she was having, and I took a sec and just said “I have no idea how to fix that issue”.
Even at that time I didn’t know anything about the Microsoft office suite, I was basically just very into Linux at that time.
Honestly, that's on them. I don't do my hobbies for others. I do those for my own pleasure.
And if they ask, I'll scare them away with deep 40k lore or lifting, just to get back to it.
If Games Workshop asks you to decide who from the existing lore is going to be the next faction to be introduced, who are you picking?
Well, i already imperium's fanboy, so I'm already having a blast in being catered to.
What’s your favorite faction?
From the moment i understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.
And yeah, exactly because the heavy augmentation and replacing body parts theme. Iron hands fit that theme rather closely as well. So it is always a toss up between Mechanicus and Iron hands.
The strength and certainty of steel is something to be craved. Good choices.
I love the Iron Hands, because they’re called the Iron Hands, lead by a primarch whose name means Iron Hands, and a flagship called The Fist of Iron. They know what they’re about.
Yeah that has always been rather good wordplay.
"We should catch up sometime"
Ain't nothing to catch up on homie, I'm boring af and not talking to you about it
“Phone” ok so you don’t know how to explain your online obsession with normies. Here’s a clue, lie. Do you like a sport but don’t really follow it? That’s your hobby. Did you cook food last week? Hobby. Did you drink alcohol in the last week? Do you know the names of the expensive brands of whatever you drank? Hobby.
I like sports (aoe2), I'm a foodie (frozen pizzas), and I'm into specialty beers (whatever beer is on special this week) :3
My hobbies include:
Books, but when I mention how much I love science fiction, people’s eyes glaze over and they stop listening, even when I try engage discussion by asking what they like to read.
Spiders and insects, but when I mention how much I love spiders, folks have to tell me the story of that time they squished a spider because they were scared of a tiny little critter who is more afraid of them and unable to actually do any damage.
But I’m the weirdo.
What kind of science fiction? What are you reading right now? Who's your favourite author? What's your address?
Yes these are replies we need. What books do you read, name them, I am starved for good sci-fi.
Sharing my 2025 reading list for the curious (plenty of scifi)
Oh shoot, I'd misremembered Charles Sheffield's Heritage series as being by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven. Huge impossible megastructures in space left behind by unknowable beings who may just have had a goofy sense of humor.
Higher Education and the rest of that series hit me at just the right age.
What kind of science fiction?
As a gal who grew up on TNG and DS9 episodes, I absolutely love space ships! Anything with a good galaxy spanning adventure is high on my list to read. I’ve been reading some old Star Trek novels that are always fun times.
Lately I’ve been enjoying scifi romance novels. The local romance bookstore separates scifi/fantasy romance from the contemporary stuff making it easier to find.
What are you reading right now?
Currently reading Chaos Vector 2nd book of The Protectorate trilogy by Megan E. O’Keefe. I picked the first one up at the local book crawl a few years ago because the cover looked really cool. I try to read as little as I can about a book before I start it, I even avoid back cover blurbs or at least only skim the first 2-3 sentences. That’s how I picked this one.
Who's your favourite author?
Scifi: James SA Corey, John Scalzi, and Jessie Mihalik are my current top 3 authors. I also enjoy some Huxley, Bradbury, Andy Weir
Less scifi, but sometimes adjacentish: Blake Crouch, Kit Rocha, Philip Pullman, Ken Liu
What's your address?
My address is:
123456 Where a Bunch of Cool Spiders Live Court
Big Bug City, ADOGN 00001
Brilliant, thank you! I'm always on the lookout for new SF books and authors. I'll check out your recommendations!
You're talking to the wrong people: I fuckin love sci fi and fantasy books and talk to a ton of other people who do as well. Especially right now with the popularity of PHM and stuff, easy to translate that to other sci fi discussion.
I don't love spiders, but I don't hate them either, and most people like learning cool animal/insect facts, but that's gonna be a little harder of a sell I suppose. Still, you'll find those people too, it just might be a little harder.
Can't stand spiders (beyond like Daddy Long Legs, I don't squish spiders, but also keep them away from me lol) but I feel you, "walking through the woods looking for cool bugs and mushrooms and lizards and shit" usually earns me odd looks until I mention "I also smoke weed there."
Actually that's a big reason I finally bought a camera I'd been eyeing but couldn't justify the cost, so I would look less weird to anyone I tell my hobbies or happen to pass near a trail. I debated on a bear suit (jk lol), settled on a purpose that is seen as "normal" instead. More expensive but what can ya do I don't wanna look creepy or deal with judgement from people who only "phone" and think lizards are weird. Good cover for the cops too, since my usual cover is illegal still.
Wish I'd gotten one years ago though, the phone robbed me of any will to take photos and somehow getting the camera brought it back, maybe it's just nostalgia from the advent of Digital Photography but whatever it is I'm glad I found it again.
Walking through the woods is awesome, just phrase it that you love nature and the outdoors, boom done. I love hiking, and not in small part because of the cool shit you find and to smoke weed out in nature.
I love that you got a camera to cover your weed smoking nature hikes. I was gifted a gadget that attaches to my phone recently, it came with a macro lens so I’ve been using that to take more big pictures. I was considering getting a camera with macro lens before I received that, but I may still get one. What camera do you have?
I love stoned walks and I also do those as frequently as I can. What is your favorite thing you like to take pictures of?
Try telling people you're into books, but you prefer non-fiction. I always get the response, "What, like, biographies?"
No, I mean books about psychology, Earth science, art, history, or any of the many other books I can learn from. It's wild how many people seem to forget such books even exist.
Though I will read a good biography. I'm currently reading Fortunate Son, an autobiography by John Fogerty. But biographies are far from the only non-fiction books out there.
I know exactly what you are talking about. I don’t read a lot of nonfiction but if I mention that I read in general, biographies are usually the first thing people ask about.
I’m going to sound like I’m hating on biographies, but I’m absolutely not. Many biographies have great importance. But…I feel like a lot of people read biographies because they are a form of gossip and people like gossip. In my experience, people who only read biographies also read celebrity gossip.
Do you have any earth science recommendations for someone who enjoys science in general? I’ve always liked biology and all of its disciplines.
Information acquisition
Memetic analysis
Yeah, that is lame and you need to find more hobbies.
I evaluate apps and social media systems.
You can say "small scale computers"
Embedded small scale computer tactile glass kineticist
The problem is that - at least for me - phone is for 'fast forwarding' the boring parts of the day. If that's the case with you too, then you throw away your life instead of living it.
Get a real hobby. They are great.
Not cool but “current affairs analyst”
