Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

Hilariously, the act they're criminalizing in porn is not actually illegal to do. You can bang your step siblings but you better not film it

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Peruse royal family tree for reference

[–] PolarKraken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

PornHub codes up a solution that just replaces every step-whatever title with a randomly chosen historical instance of some real royal folks who really shouldna been bumpin uglies

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

or fantasy. just use that twisted dragon family from game of thrones. "oh darlyon the 3rd, my washing machine broke" and things of that nature

[–] PolarKraken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Well, I'm sometimes clumsy with the ol words, but the joke was about using strictly historical references of things that happened, to throw the idea of "yes the ruling class tends to know what's best" into a more honest framing.

CSA mention

Once the law comes into effect, anyone found to posses or publish pornography which shows incest between family members, or sex between step- or foster-relations where one person is pretending to be under-18, will be criminalized

Buried the lede on that pretty damn hard

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well that's a lot more specific than the headline and also like.. really hard to prove. That and why would it just be in one context it's not allowed?

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

I suspect it's so they can prosecute abusers who film unequivocally bad things, since this removes any room for interpretation or coaching the victims so the abuser can get off on a technicality.

That's my best guess as to why it would be written like that. We might be getting primed by the headline to interpret it uncharitably.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 34 points 1 month ago

9/11 but for gooners

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

oh no they're going to have to think of a new scenario, after so many years does anyone even remember how?

[–] fox@hexbear.net 59 points 1 month ago (2 children)

My stepfather-in-law is a pornographer. It is difficult to get his attention in an erotic scene because he is lost in wonder. We were in a porn theatre together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to come up with a new concept today. I will never forget his answer… 'We can’t, we don’t know how to do it.'"

[–] MeetMeAtTheMovies@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is the wildest comment I’ve read here in a while

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 44 points 1 month ago (3 children)

It's a (well-executed!) snowclone, the original being

My father-in-law is a builder. It is difficult to get his attention in a magnificent space because he is lost in wonder. We were in a cathedral together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to build it today. I will never forget his answer… "We can’t, we don’t know how to do it."

[–] MeetMeAtTheMovies@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

Damn I had a feeling but I wanted to believe

[–] WashedAnus@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

The answer is ~€374 million using La Sagrada Familia as the example

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What an incredibly silly thing to say, as if there isn't a veritable army of people effectively building and rebuilding cathedrals using historical techniques to this day. Poor ole stepfather been done dirty, now everyone knows how ignorant and bad of a builder he is...

Actual answer: “lol lmao. Porky ain’t paying for that”

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

The stepfather was staring at the titty angels in the stucco

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

maybe door dash

[–] Lowleekun@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

UK is so fucking weird. Look guys there is nothing we can do about health and social services, we gotta save money for 'the EcOnOmY' but you know what? How about we save this country by making pprn harder to come by? That should help.

[–] Big@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

That's all that's left in all the European welfare states. There is no political willpower to do anything except mindlessly ban, restrict and surveill everything.

Norway for example, instead of fixing our worthless public transport, opted instead to enforce an age limit on energy drinks.

The trains only run at half capacity and can only run on time less than 60% of all departures. But hey, now I have to show my ID every time I buy a Red Bull.

[–] abc@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (9 children)

is there an epidemic of step-siblings fucking eachother or something in the UK why would you even need to highlight this & subsequently ban it???????

I like how the amendment calls it step-incest lol

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

i like how the language is called english but the english themselves are consistently the worst at utilizing it. it's so clearly STEPCEST what is wrong with the heap of lords (besides literally everything about the constitution of the body, it's members, and how they are appointed)

If it's not from the step bro mountains of [joke still under construction, please wear hard hats while scrolling through]

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

They're like a thousand years old and grew up wrifing like fhis

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

There isn't an epidemic in real life, but it is very common in pornography to skirt any laws surrounding incest while keeping... the taboo aspect, I guess?

For Brits, it probably takes away the mystique of the royals being a bunch of sister- and cousin-fuckers. Also, think of the children? Isn't that exactly what The Andrew Formerly Known as Prince was doing?

[–] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I wonder if this is like when the UK banned any porn with squirting in it, where if you read into it past the headlines it was really just any depictions of female pleasure

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

No way is that a real thing.

looks online

What the fuck ...

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How will Albo respond to this one?

Will he let England overtake Australia with its oddly specific seeming porn microgenre legislation or will he find a way to come from behind and backdoor australia's parent country, perhaps with a brand new law against depictions of sodomy? One thing is for certain, I'm volcel and I believe pornographix should be drawn by the consumer then burnt.

This will be th first law in a century that the King officially steps in to kill the legislation

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Normally I tell people to step away from the lathe but I actually think you might be the correct custodian for it

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There's no way this passes the house of lords

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The peerage is the House of Lords, this headline specifically says that the House of Lords passed it.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

House of loads

[–] BattleshipPokemon@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

uk finally getting a dub, wish they'd enforce the ban on actual incest though

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

this is a vote from the house of lords, comrade. they can't very well pass laws against their own parents and spouses! what a heap of scandal!

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What is with this place turning into conservatives the second it comes to sex?

[–] 389aaa@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I have to imagine it's from years of volcel police jokes reinforcing a sex-negative culture and the complete lack of understanding of feminism or queer theory of most of the userbase.
