Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Pickle ball is the proletarian form of tennis. The courts are smaller, they take up less land. The paddles are solid, they'll never need to be restrung. The balls effectively last forever. Furthermore, pickle ball kills fascists.

As far as sports go, tennis is not expensive. A tennis court is roughly the same size as a basketball court, it's common to see publicly accessible courts, and all of the equipment costs less than half a day's wages.

The balls DO NOT last forever. They usually break along the manufacturing seam after a while. They aren't recyclable but you can give them to your dog to play with.

The ULTIMATE tennis is just played on whatever buildings happen to be nearby!

So funny to me that Kirk’s death is called an “assassination.” Didn’t that word used to be reserved for people who were important in some way?

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

And what's rich is he's become an even bigger meme in death.

When will we admit as a society that the benefits of pickleball (mild exercise, daydrinking) do not outweigh the risks? (Death, pickles)

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pickle ball requires running sometimes and is therefore not a day drinking sport. People need to wake up to this. Sports you can drink to are slow paced and mostly involve aim. Like darts, bocce, curling, mini golf and while I hate to include it, regular golf, pool etc.

"Cheerlead choreographies? Yep, that's also fascist" - Me to my normal friends

I still have no idea what pickleball is, and I still refuse to learn.

[–] SweatySteven@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

It's like basketball, except with pickles and pickle jars. You gotta slam dunk the pickle for extra points

Modern cheerleading as in cheerleading for the fascist boot entering your mouth?

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No, as in the extremely dangerous not-classified-as-a-sport-to-avoid-safety-regulations practice of highschool cheerleading within a for-profit monopolistic framework. Also hired a lot of already-convicted pedophiles to help run his organization, because of course he did. Just this perfect fascist trifecta of sexualizing teenage girls, endangering and maiming them, and also grifting on top of it.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It was tough in high school having people understand the difference to your saying it isnt classified as a sport and therefore not held under the same regulatory standards ans saying it's not a sport in my personal opinion, cheerleaders in my high school, I was kn your side, it should be considered a gymnastic sport and be treated as such. The sexualizing teenage girls problem went over my head at the time cause as a teenage boy, so was I. But lack of safety was noticeable and I thought this as someone who was street skating the most haggard locations and concave hills without a helmet for 6 hours a day minimum when it wasn't raining. High school gym mats arent enough for these kinds of stunts

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also, slightly less known is that the teenager pyramids are landing pads for teenage alien spaceships illuminati

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

People weren't ready to hear that in 2007

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

Cheering with a boot in your mouth is actually quite challenging.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

Webb died from complications of a fall he suffered while playing pickleball

lol

So this is embarrassing, but for like 20 years I thought pickleball was something my high school invented as something for bored kids to do inside a gym when it was raining or cold. I had no idea until a few years ago that it's a real sport. Also bonus trivia, it's the number one cause of a specific kind of sport injury in adults over 50.

I'm just going to pretend that this headline appeared out of a time warp and was read at some point during the mid 90s, to be ready as an inscrutable non sequitur.

Because the future knows what it did.

And I'm not even angry. I'm just disappointed...
