Of course it's mostly rumors. There are individual reports from H3H3 fans stating they were getting refunds for their gifted subs and people who are anti-Ethan and haven't watched the stream in years were receiving gifted subs.
I really think their viewership is low enough that the amount of subs bought on Monday was more than they could give away. They would have to toggle on the "allow gifted memberships" option in YT to receive them.

I just saw a clip of him for the first time in like a year, and bro look absolutely fucked already back then but this one I saw, holy shit. He did not look healthy in any way you can use that word. Is that really how YouTube works? On Twitch, I get thrown random gifts subs from channels I've watched for like two minutes or possibly not at all, and I've never heard of gift memberships being automatically refunded. Seems strange that they'd just pass up on money for no reason.
