I’ve noticed I spend less time on Lemmy than I did on Reddit. Some of that may have to due with content, but I think it’s mostly Lemmy isn’t manipulating what I’m looking at to keep my dopamine hits coming. It definitely feels like withdrawal at times.

I am learning to appreciate the joy in opening Lemmy after I checked it a few hours ago and not seeing anything new and having the freedom to close the app again.

[–] Delvin4519@lemmy.world 0 points 2 hours ago

I honestly don't mind. Before this was the replacement go to site after the API fiasco elsewhere. Now I feel like coming on here only makes me sad and depressed; so I stopped coming on here even though I was mostly a lurker. I stopped getting any enjoyment from browsing the internet or my old internet hobbies.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 5 points 7 hours ago

It happens from time to time. Post and comment more.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 8 points 8 hours ago

I post daily and have a fairly steady amount of up votes and comments. This time of year interaction dies down pretty noticeably. I used to think it was me and I was doing something wrong, but people are just doing spring stuff and not on here as much. They'll be back. There's a couple periods a year where it happens. It's just more noticeable here since we have less people.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 7 points 8 hours ago

Gotta build the community. This is not a bot driven Russian/american Propaganda machine. Its humans. A lot like forums from ye olden days, which were far better.

Real humans aren't posting click bait 2000 times a minute.

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 2 points 6 hours ago

Mbin has "loud" subscribing, which notifies you on any post added to a community (or posted by a user). I don't know if Lemmy has something similar, but that really worked wonders for me in making the fediverse feel more alive.

[–] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

People started yelling at each other more than on all the stuff I blocked on reddit, so I only check it every couple weeks now. I check back bc if it ends up 100% negative I'll delete it from my phone, but I still have hope ppl will be kinder

[–] markkkkkk@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

Ohh I actually thought I was the only one, it’s too quiet I kind of like quiet but maybe with time would fun like Reddit

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

The problem is that I'm enjoying it and want to consume more than is there.

I might actually start posting instead of just commenting. It's horrible.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 32 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Nah, I'm just checking it more often, which is a sign I need to take some preventative corrections towards my mental health now that I think of it

[–] greatwhitebuffalo41@slrpnk.net 2 points 6 hours ago

Hey now, no need to call me out so hard lol

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 51 points 15 hours ago

Not me, but it's important to remember that Lemmy doesn't just feed you an algo. You have to actually post things.

[–] iamdefinitelyoverthirteen@lemmy.world 31 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Not quieter, no, but the memes are all gone now. It's just "This is how fucked the world is" now. I miss the funny memes.

[–] greatwhitebuffalo41@slrpnk.net 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Make sure you're following some fun stuff too. Otherwise it just gets depressing.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 4 hours ago

Personally I try to follow only fun stuff! Subscribed/Home feed for fun, All feed for doom and gloom.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 5 points 12 hours ago

there's plenty of comics content posted across a range of communities...

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club -1 points 5 hours ago

The devs seem happy with Lenny not growing and the numbers seem to indicate that Lemmy isn't growing unless brought on by an external source.

[–] masterspace@lemmy.ca 27 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Good. Get off the internet and do anything else.x

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 17 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Ahhhhh no I dont wanna touch grass.

The grass is lava.

(I've been procrastinating my writing project for like... months... probably a year... lol)

(Did you know, the outside world has monsters that will abduct people and eat them?

yeah it probably has—I honestly like it thought. I sometimes check it and scroll for a bit but it has really helped with the content addition caused by Reddit. I do not go to reddit unless a google search on a technical problem leads me there (only because the archived content is usually where answers are found).

[–] skooma_king@piefed.social 15 points 14 hours ago (4 children)

I’ve seen a lot more pro violence posts and comments lately, which is pretty off putting. I’ve not posted several times because I don’t want to end up on a list because of some echo chambers of maladjusted people. I don’t comment that often to begin with, and lemme/piefed seems to attract people banned from other platforms and other weirdos. Just not a very welcoming platform.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 4 points 10 hours ago

I’ve seen a lot of violence posts coming from non us users. It seems there’s some kind of effort to incite the us into violence going on and I don’t like it one bit.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 5 points 14 hours ago

Yeah, whoever is posting this pro violence content should get punched in the face

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 5 points 14 hours ago

Same. It was chill then suddenly about the last few weeks there is a lot of animosity on average posts.

There’s suddenly a lot more extreme views. Almost like ganging up to make people shrink or censor.

And finally a spike of relationship drama posts. They feel fake and fishy. Maybe bots.

[–] Libb@piefed.social 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

I don't see much if any content promoting violence myself but if I was I would agree with you. I also don't post any, and was not banned from anywhere: I left reddit the moment I realized I disagreed with their policy.

So, if I may ask: have you tried using the settings to decide what's (not) displayed in your home feed, coupled with keywords and blocking the most obvious trolls, those are fine tools to remove most if not all of that... sad content.

For example, on my home feed I only display 'Subscribed' content meaning that the only content I read comes from those communities I'm already subscribed to... none of which promoting any violence or, when this happens or when I realize some community is not what I expected it to be I just unsubscribe from it and I don't have to read it ever again. Also, I don't hesitate to block people the moment I realize they're to trigger emotions and provoke, not to discuss.

Edit: clarifications.

[–] justdaveisfine@piefed.social 21 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Weirdly in my own personal experience, a lot of social media spaces have been quieter, with many people I know who used to be avid posters are now no longer posting at all.

For the fediverse specifically, there's definitely higher activity hours and low ones. Sometimes refreshing the feed has nothing new for like ~20 minutes, and sometimes its every time I refresh, which is kind of odd.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 2 points 10 hours ago

I feel this. I stopped using almost all social media except pie fed (if you can call pie fed social media). This makes me part of the disappearing voices elsewhere, I used to be pretty active elsewhere.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 3 points 10 hours ago

I think it’s because I enjoy it more and there’s no algorithm that will make me scroll through the already read messages? I may be wrong but that’s what I think.

[–] Libb@piefed.social 6 points 13 hours ago

I don't mind it being quiet, quite the opposite. Which is another reason why I’ve been filtering the heck out of the Fediverse since I’ve started using it (most of the content shared is mere noise to me).

That being said, I've noticed a somewhat reduced activity without having changed my filtering in any way. That's even more obvious in my small French part of the Fediverse. It just feels a tad quieter.

Is it losing users? Are people just learning to keep quiet? No idea.

It's not great, because I would like to see the Fediverse become a real alternative to those centralized services, even if that means I would have to filter out a lot more noise, but I'm also fine with the idea that the Fediverse may never succeed in becoming one such alternative. Like I’m fine with barely anyone reaching me through MP or through my personal blog anymore. This just seems to not be a thing anymore but it doesn’t prevent me from blogging or to participate in discussions around here ;)

It has been a few years already I have made up my mind that I needed to not rely on anything for my personal use (I'm not talking banks and key services like that, just online services, cloud, social medias, Uber or even my own blog for that matters, little things like that) or to not evcen need a computer at all to keep myself busy.

I don’t mind using them (at least those that do respect my privacy) but I also would not feel devastated if they were to vanish or, but that would obviously be a very unrealistic take, if a law was to pass making it mandatory to use my real name online (which is no secret, I have used it for many years, it’s just that I’ve grown used to being ‘Libb’), or one that would make it mandatory to prove I’m 18+ to be allowed to boot ‘my’ computer... Well, if something that absurd was to ever happen, I would simply stop bothering with those online services and would stop using my suddenly not so ‘personal’ computer anymore.

I would probably would keep using one for work (it’s not that obvious, as I already write longhand) but I would not spend a cent more on online services for my personal usage and would not buy any ‘personal’ device anymore.

But I digress. What was your question? Sure, I’ve noticed some quietness going on too. Maybe we should all try harder than we already do to post more? As an incentive? I doubt it would change much, to be perfectly honest.

[–] PragmaticOne@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

Um…. No because today is he most replies I’ve received on the platform. I guess you get what you put in. :)

[–] troed@fedia.io 9 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

My experience is the opposite actually. I do browse All on Lemmy though just to be able to surface interesting stuff.

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 7 points 14 hours ago

Yeah instead of selectively subscribing like on Reddit the strategy here is to selectively block

[–] BigTurkeyLove@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 14 hours ago

I feel like being bored on social media isn't a bad thing, I'm more in and out than I was on reddit and it doesn't consume as much of my time, but I still feel like the same mental itch of news and content is scratch, which for me is a good thing.

[–] Vicinus@piefed.zip 5 points 14 hours ago

Looks like Lemmy lost 3.4% of MAU over the last week (Fediverse Activity Post). With severs jumping in and out it might feel more like 7-8%.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (3 children)

I have noticed a change. It seems to coincide with the lemmynsfw.com disappearing, but im not attributing it to that, or the timing. I seem to recall another server disappearing around then.

Has there been a reduction in active users?

[–] lmmarsano@group.lt 1 points 5 hours ago

Nsfw is gone? Can you tell me more? Did it just disappear? I noticed a lot less porn in my feed so I guess that explains that.

[–] StrawberryPigtails@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 14 hours ago

If I remember correctly, the instance owner vanished but left the instance running.

Secondary admins kept the place running until something happened to the instance itself. Something with the database that the admin didn't have access to recover from.

I believe it was that secondary admin that spun up the new instance.

Sorry that's vague but about to get ready for work.

Not sure just joined I like the speed more than reddit.

[–] Bazell@lemmy.zip 5 points 15 hours ago

Yes, I noticed this too. Especially a few days ago it became quiet. Mostly news bots.

I find the social media (piefed and mastodon) I use are busy enough to keep me entertained, not too busy to make me addictated.

[–] DearMoogle@piefed.social 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I don’t really feel it, but I think that’s because I’m not on all the time. I’m often busy with real life, so I just come on when I have extra downtime. There’s definitely an ebb and flow. None of that matters to me though. I’m all in for the Fediverse 100%.
