If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

Because it's sick AF, and they're sick AF.

[–] baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

then they should go to the hospital

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago

They have the right to get ill.

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 5 points 19 hours ago

Right answer.

[–] IntrovertTurtle@lemmy.zip 12 points 17 hours ago

They figured out the drift-stare before Luigi did!

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 29 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Their eyes are stationary in their sockets, so they gotta have crazy necks that are all bendy and whatnot

[–] dyslexicdainbroner@lemmy.world 9 points 19 hours ago (5 children)

Owls have twice as many neck vertebra of us lowly stiff necked humans

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

I like the thought of a world where Owls are speciest towards us and call us stiff-necks

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago

*loose-eyed humans.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

And it's coiled up like a spring!

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

so owls have double the neck per neck compared to humans. that's wild.

This comment made my neck hurt

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

My neck already hurt so I was hoping after reading your comment that it would have the opposite effect and stop hurting, but alas.

Now that you mention it, they are kind of OP. Flight, stealth, hypermobility. And looking like absolute BAMF'ers at any size or angle.

[–] zemo@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

They are excellent predators, but they're not that intelligent. There is always a trade off. Owls are often used as imagery to represent intellect or wisdom but it's pretty much an ancient misunderstanding. Any corvid will beat an owl at intelligence. A true OP Animal would be excellent hunters AND be highly intelligent. Humans are a good example.

Corkscrew neck bones.

[–] kureta@lemmy.ml 6 points 16 hours ago

That actual owl looks like a cubist rendition of an owl.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 8 points 18 hours ago

Who’s going to stop them?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago

whos gonna stop them, the federal owl service? they can't even put a ladder up without hitting their head

I'd like to put in an evolutionary pull request to upgrade the human body with the following features:

  • Bendy neck for gyroscopic head stabilization
  • Ultra-low latency zoomable vision
  • 360° neck rotation

Hold up, if we’re doing that we need to add internal gonads and separated food & air tubes.

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 1 points 7 hours ago

As long as you’re redesigning us intelligently, straighten out that recurrent laryngeal nerve.

[–] veniasilente@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 15 hours ago

2 cm longer arms so we can scratch that spot at the back, pls

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 9 points 20 hours ago

Someone had to be the most badass after the dinosaurs threw in the towel to some space rock.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

Someone has to. Might as well be them. It wasn't going to work on bears because bears can't fly.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

That you know of

[–] Janx@piefed.social 7 points 20 hours ago

If you can make it to the same height, you're free to try as well!

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

They're not, but who's going to stop them? The system is crumbling.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 4 points 20 hours ago

To see the Side Mice, duh

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Next tier evolution.
