If there's some part of Warhammer lore you think is really cool and unique, I can almost guarantee you that it's actually cribbing from a short sci-fi novel that was published in the 60s or 70s, and that short story still manages to more thoughtfully explore the concept more than all endless pages of lor and fan-wikis ever could

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 17 points 5 days ago (3 children)

And there's always some 40k tidbit you can find adapting those stories to fit every setting, franchise, or whatever you can think of because fluff exists solely to explain why your toys are battling against my toys. These very serious man children who are very concerned about the very serious """"lore"""" are so deeply unserious.

Like Necromunda is just Judge Dredd mixed with Mad Max. Alan "Fuck the police I'm an actual wizard" Moore wrote for Judge Dredd and it's reflected in Necromunda. But subtlety is for cowards, I guess.

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago

Like Necromunda is just Judge Dredd mixed with Mad Max.

Warhammer 40K itself is Judge Dredd x Dune x Aliens in a legally distinct parody setting riffing on The Lord of the Rings. IMO Necromunda specifically is more The Warriors but in WH40K.

Like Judge Dredd is weirdly core to Warhammer 40K's identity (it was created by artists in the same general scene as the creators of Judge Dredd). The specific form of psykers, hive cities, and mutants were lifted from there, as were the slightly more niche Adeptus Arbites who are literally just Judges.

GW just blatantly steals everything they want, which made the funniest moment ever when Blizzard blatantly stole from them and then made more money on it then the entire plastic crack could bring GW for like a century lol.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

WarCraft Orcs & Humans would have been a goldmine for GW if they had let Blizzard do the Orcs vs. Brettonians game they wanted. Amazing how badly they punted that.

Alan "Fuck the police I'm an actual wizard" Moore wrote for Judge Dredd

nerd Moore wrote a lot of stuff for 2000 AD, but he never did a Dredd story.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 21 points 4 days ago

Gotta love these guys acting like fictional plastic chunks have some sort of deep, immutable purpose beyond cleaning out their wallets

wojak-nooo No, there can't be women space marines because the Geneseed only works on male DNA because the process is ancient and unchanging. That's why there's also a new process that makes space marines even bigger and stronger and more expensive!

Once again, reactionaries are incapable of original ideas and just repurpose whatever they hear the left using.

Comment #2 but I think at the level of engineering and artificial organs and hormones that you're getting into with space marine shit the whole concept of gender just goes straight out the window

Like biologically you're going to be a meat brick pumped full of hormones that make your meat even brickier

socially you're going to be socialized as a meat brick to build the wall protecting the emperor

what is gender to a brick, what is a masculine brick, what is a feminine brick

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I think the funniest interpretation of the lore is the If the Emperor Had a TTS Device version where the Emperor is just a very obviously gay man who's uncomfortable around women and just wants to hang out with his large adult sons while enacting his inscrutable 50,000 year plan.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

And he forgots about plan, he just live for the memes and collect his family while staving off incredible amount of background suffering. GW axing TTS was really the worst thing they ever did.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

True but we got hunter the parenting and honestly I think it's a more superior sandbox for alfabusa and friends to play in than grimdorkhammer 40k.

Oh no my sexless super soldiers with Roman haircuts and sometimes ponytails have more ponytails than before!

Roman haircuts and sometimes ponytails

Baldness. Astartes pattern baldness is one of the older 40k memes because of how many of them are bald. They even made sisters of silence wear topknots which is just baldness with extra steps.

frothingfash: “You gave the plastic COOTIES!”

This is an actual political belief. These MFs won the culture wars. Enough people saw these fuckasses and thought they were cool.

Common sense isn’t really so common.

Anyone crying about GW ruining lore or whatever are clearly the tourists, the "canon" changes Everytime GW needs to sell a few million plastic minis. Storm of chaos, what? krorks, what? Slann using guns, chain swords in fantasy, xenomorph tyranids, Terminator Necrons, goblins being chaos aligned, etc etc

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah I really stopped giving a shit with Primaris being an obvious money grab to convince players to buy their Space Marine armies a second time. Or how Horus Heresy for some reason has like 60+ books with awful prose, zero editing, and turned something mythical into something bland while shitting up the rest of the franchise. Then I realized I hit grog status because a lot of the older players when I started 20-something years ago felt the same way with the shift from Rogue Trader to 3rd. or the wave of secondaries flooding in from Dawn of War.

It's all made up and the story doesn't matter. No one is going to force you to buy and paint stuff you don't like nor are they going to take away your models.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yeah bringing back Guilliman and the addition of the Primarus really was the dagger in the heart of the franchise being 'consistent' for me. Not that it ever really was, it's just you can't just make 'bigger, better, Space Marines' the whole point of the 40k franchise is that the Imperium is in a state of technological freefall. Things are only supposed to get worse in more absurd and fantastical ways because the Imperium doesn't resemble any of the good qualities of humans.

[–] Leon_Grotsky@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago

And that's aside from the fact most of the inane super-nerd lore is largely fleshed out by the TTRPGs like WFRP and Dark Heresy that were 100% created by the kind of "woke" people they're so heated about.

Have they considered just not buying what they don't like? Leaves more for the rest, who simply enjoy a hobby.

No. Instead they wine and bawl and somebody please step in to make sure everything is old, rigid and bland.

If every franchise would adhere to the "lore" this much, everything will get stale very quick.

I enjoy non-canon things for giving me some new ideas and what-ifs and maybe it's good enough to become canon anyway, move everything forward and keep things interesting.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I love how these CHUDs hear a common complaint about themselves and just don't internalise it at all, but they memorise it and just use it as a "no u" all the time without understanding what it means, just thinking it means "insulting bad words", they have so little self awareness it's almost like negative self awareness.

[–] Bolshechick@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Every single person I know who's into 40k is a trans woman. These chuds don't seem to realize that they are the tourists lol. Warhammer, magic the gathering, dnd, etc. Sorry but tgirls own all those now

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

rage-cry they're not dolls, they're action-figures!

that's all i got from this

They aren't even action figures, they are just toy soldiers.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 15 points 5 days ago

The thing about this being a test for fem marines is pretty fucking funny. Sure, GW has their release and manufacturing planned like 5 years out, but if there's enough backlash to femstodes they'll backpedal and dump all the injection moulds into the sea.

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

I kind of thought the "no women space marines" thing was part of the Imperium being a repressive patriarchal hellhole. I don't know how to feel about "the Imperium (who are still definitely space Nazis) are actually inclusive when recruiting their elite fascist supersoldiers."

I guess overall it's good if people feel included, even if it makes the satire less effective.

I also guess that the people complaining thought the Imperium was "cool," so like... satire is kind of dead anyway.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 19 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Custodes are each engineered on an individual level and drawn from earth's noble houses. Each one is uniquely modified to turn them into supersoldiers. There's some speculation they may have been the Men of Gold from the Age of Strife when the Men of Stone (regular humans) fought the Men of Iron (rogue AI). Or they share some part of that process. Regardless, the Emperor used parts of his own genetic material in their creation. Custodes can be men, women, or nonbinary, etc. because their creation process involves custom built organs, gene editing, and so on.

Space Marines were designed to replace Thinder Warriors and use the genetic material of their primarchs, who were made from the Emperor's genetic material. Primarchs were likely also made using warp fuckery the Emperor stole from the Chaos Gods. Organ transplants, hormone treatments, and geneseed are used to turn usually children into Space Marines. Some chapters draw from adult populations, though the failure rate is higher. The creation of marines is a brutal process. Often, candidates die from their bodies rejecting organs, go insane from geneseed, and so on.

Custodes take much longer to make with technology kept so secret it's only known to the Custodes back on Terra. However, the failure rate is much, much lower than marines because it uses such an involved process and because it's using scientific genetic engineering without the use of space magic from literal hell. Thus, turning an adult woman into Custodes is "easier" than turning boys into basic marines. It wouldn't matter anyway because the process of making marines would leave them male-presenting.

Anywho, that's the wishy-washy fluff reason why there are female Custodes but only male Space Marines. Personally, I don't think Custodes should be a playable faction in 40k because Space Marines are already super rare. And there are already super, duper rare special Space Marines. Custodes as a faction outside of Horus Heresy are like "But I have an invisible force field!" level of super, duper, uber rare Space Marine.

Modern GW is too chickenshit to come out and say "Yes, the Imperium are patriarchal, the Emperor was just a sexist incel, and no, chuds still aren't allowed take your money elsewhere." Some former GW staff went on to make Trench Crusade and have stated this opinion loudly and clearly, so it's not like this is something new being injected into modern 40k.

There were female space marines in the first book, they got pruned as part of the franchise's long march away from satire and towards marketability.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 13 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Were they? There were the "female warrior" (Jayne and Gabs) models which are definitely in proto-power armor, and were released after Rogue Trader, but I don't recall them ever being mentioned in the book itself.

Having the space Nazis employ women fash supersoldiers is like an even worse version of the "more women drone pilots" school of inclusivity.

Granted, there are lots of good reasons to depict fascists that way (idk, look at The Boys or something) and I have no idea if that's what GW is going for, but I don't think this is really what inclusivity is or should be.

[–] Moidialectica@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (5 children)

40k was way too big of a series for me to even try to understand what it was trying to do with the story, and with a surface level reading you can immediately see how fucked up nearly every faction is

I don't get the appeal I don't get what makes it fun to expand on I don't get why people want to participate

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

40k was way too big of a series for me to even try to understand what it was trying to do with the story

It's basically just a giant shitpost setting riffing on a bunch of different properties and tropes that a ton of different authors have written stories in, some of which have dropped the "this is a shitpost" tone in favor of trying to make the setting work in a coherent way.

with a surface level reading you can immediately see how fucked up nearly every faction is

I'm pretty sure that's What It Was Trying To Do With The Story

Imagine caring this much about overly priced action figures. At least action figures back in the day had movable limbs and can shoot stuff.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago

they're still overpriced but joytoy has 40k figures that have movable limbs bean

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I play sisters and they've got a lot of cool stuff unfortunately one of the best things they have is also one of the stupidest looking things in the entire model range although to be fair they also gave a very similarly stupid looking thing to the space marines so

I preferred it when they were called "witch hunters" and not "aDePtA sOrOrItAs". I played that one codex for sixteen fukken years, talk about savings!

I am vindicated by my choice early in life to get into Battletech and fall in love with the some of the best battlemech pilots and confirmed baddies such as:

Natasha Kerensky, Martha Pryde, Joanna, Ranna Kerensky.

I will also note that Battletech has female elementals (infantry that wears power armor) and have had them since the 80s and it's never been a problem
