Oh wow look, another totally organic cultural phenomenon that is definitely not munfactured corporate hype!

I can't wait for all the Dunecore aesthetic TikToks that will mysteriously disappear after the marketing period ends!

I believe Barbieheimer worked because they were distinctly different films tonally and the juxtaposition was funny in an organic way. Dune will be more serious but they're both sci fi action films.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

100%. The whole appeal of Barbenheimer was the juxtaposition.

[–] Commie_Chameleon@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Plus it wasn’t clearly some marketing people trying to copy something relatively organic

[–] GeckoChamber@hexbear.net 39 points 2 months ago

That's so bad I reflexively tried to downvote this post

Robert Downey Jr. is coming back to Marvel slop? Hollywood really has no ideas.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 38 points 2 months ago

Yeah, but this time he plays a megalomaniacal scientist who wears a metal mask all the time!

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

Mel Gibson might actually be possessed by an old catholic demon so maybe Downey doesn’t have a choice

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

And Chris Evans.

I will be there day 1 for dunc and likely for doom as well. Im the most liberal poster on Hexbear after all antelope-popcorn

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 19 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I don't care much for Marvel slop but I'm a huge dune fan.

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Give me MORE monolithic austere space structures with bass accompaniment that rattles my bones. I need MORE monchromatic sets populated by angsty monotone speaking soothsayers. I EAT this SLOP unironically and I LOVE it.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

YIM YUM. PLEASE GIMME MORE (I have to agree DUNCs aesthetic is absolute peak)

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

I understand some accuracy complaints - in the og the sietches, palaces etc. were described as colorful and vibrant, but I do love me some of Villeneuve's trademark bleak colossal visual design...

I thought the Dune movies were fine, and at least aesthetically pleasing, but I couldn't give a fuck less about a third movie. Of course I only ever read the first novel so maybe that has something to do with it. I'll probably catch it in theaters but only after its been out for a couple weeks, and i'll be sure to go on like a Tuesday at an unpopular theater.

Doomsday on the other hand, is going to be legendarily bad. The actors were not even in the same room for most of the shoot. The sets are almost entirely blue screens. The script was not finished until AFTER they finished shooting. There is no way this makes for a watchable movie. Normally this would be exactly the type of movie I'd have to see in theaters, but Disney will never receive another dollar from me, so i'll be pirating it to laugh at.

Messiah is unironically a great book.

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Maybe my favorite of the series

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

It really fucking is

[–] Formerlyfarman@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It somehow reminds me of the Taliban victory irl, now they are running things, but they have to maintain a bureaucracy, and make arrangements with all these corporations and institutions, and it's soul crushing.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

Movie is probably done but they are squatting on it until the end of the year to hype. But I can't get hyped for Dune cult of bland ass watching paint dry monochrome empty deliveries so Doom slop it is for me.

[–] CarbonConscious@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago

I yearn for the monochrome. I need this third entry to be the slowest, dryest sand-planet movie they've ever made. Please Papa Timmy, don't rush it.

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I will never forgive them for what they did to stilgar.

They made him into a simp! He's not supposed to be a simp YET it's supposed to be a stark contrast when we see him again after being the emperors chief aid for like 15 years, THATS when he's a simp but noooooooooooooooooooo

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

the second movie was supposed to be psychedelic and weird and they were supposed to hang out in warm comfy caves that smell strongly of farts and sweat, but noooo tabr is a modernist cathedral somehow, and spice visions is just someone telling you stuff?

[–] fox@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

Yeah when Paul trips on spice in the cave before fighting Jamis, the book goes full on psychedelic to try and help the reader visualize how it feels to see the future

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

They fucking ruined Jessica's spiceagony! It was my favorite scene from the first boom and they fucking blew it, some blue smoke swirls for like 30 seconds and that's it!!!

THATS THE BEST YOU GOT?!

[–] Gorillatactics@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Clocked out with this KKKuebecois director after arrival portrayed the Chinese generals as the warmongers while the US were peaceful.

[–] towhee@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

the Chinese neglected to consider the impact of their top general receiving a phone call from a white woman speaking worse Chinese than someone doing their first month of italki

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

not me but i can't wait for the sam bankman fried biopic starring tim after he goes through twink death in like 5 years

[–] Gorillatactics@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Barbenheimer worked because of the great contrast in the style and substance of two movies which were both directed by well respected directors. Dunesday is IPslop vs. IPslop.

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Dune is actually good though. It'll become IP Slop when they start making fanfiction as movies.

[–] Formerlyfarman@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm a dune fan, that's why I haven't watched the new movies. If I watch them I'm going to be incredibly pissed. from what I see of them, they look like shit. as dar as i know a hack director decided to adapt a book that's mostly dialogue and exposition without using dialogue and exposition, because it's what his remedial writing class said he should do. They also supposedly whitewashed it removing the islam bits for example.

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Removing the Islam bits is fine imo. The Jihad is a horrible thing and it's better to not associate it with a live religion.

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

Not to mention that Barbenheimer was largely organic. You can't just make that happen again

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh are they dragging Robert downey jr into another role as iron man

[–] casskaydee@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Not sure if joking but he's playing Dr. Doom

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

Avengers acting as if it's a good movie. Dune will completely dominate the box office if they release at the same time.

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Looking forward to pirating it. Or I mean, I will pirate it. I'm gonna forget it exists in about 2 minutes though.

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

ITT: @jackmaoist@hexbear.net fighting for Dune: Messiah (he's right!)

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Dune is fine, it's the marketing strategy that pisses me off.
