I always call mine "bro" or "my son". Rarely do I ever actually say his name lol.

My housemates have an odd mix of nicknames for their cats. One of them has a shortened name, two of them tend to get extra syllables added to their names, and the last one, Goku, is just Goku.

I usually can't keep all their names straight, so when one of them bugs me, I tend to just point at it and say "...cat".

Ours is usually baby boy, horrible beast, buddy, or nutty buddy. If it’s his actual name, it’s usually because I’m gasping it out and scolding him for doing something naughty.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Yeah, i always call her by her name, gusfraba, krampu's little helper

[–] AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago

My cats name is Chanelle, but I rarely call her that. Her nickname is kitty cat ribs the 2nd, but I usually call her either kitty or ribs. Back story behind the nickname is my best friend had a cat when we were kids, and when he'd annoy him he'd threaten to cook him up like a rack of baby back ribs, so we started calling him kitty cat ribs.

We have two cat, both female, and neither goes by their registered name.

One was mine from before I moved in with my partner. Her actual name is masculine and uncapitalized. But we only use that name for vet visits, and to differentiate her from our other cat. Otherwise, she is just Kitty, or "Wow," after the sound she typically makes.

The other cat we adopted together, and has a female name that is properly capitalized. We normally call her one of dozens of nicknames, though most of those are derived from her name and not just random terms of endearment.

Yes, and they both know their names and come when called. If they feel like it or are hungry.

My Pyrenees is my big baby. My Yorkie is my little man. My orange cat is "fat bad." My other pets have names that are too fun, not to say. I got "bucket." She's a tabby named bucket. I got "meow san" because her automatic feeder came from Japan, and it had an audio feature that said, "meow-san. "Monkey" is meow-sans sister. My partner picked that name. Hearing her call her name makes me HAVE to call her monkey. They're both too sweet.

Dude, I think we have over 30 cats. It's a farm, though. (Not the owner)

Edit: "Hey butthole"

The only cat I really talk to is a stray born on my patio I named Princess. She only comes when I call her by name.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Only by her name Luigi, so she'll learn it. That way I KNOW she's ignoring me.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Nope.

Always one of 3 or 4 nicknames.

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I exclusively call Simon by his name. He knows when I'm talking to or about him!

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 4 months ago

Both Mimi and her son Zigou respond to their names. Orange Zigou is not the brightest, so I value and use the fact the he did learn his own name.

[–] kat_angstrom@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Harley was a 7 year old we brought home from the shelter, and she already knew her name so we didn't have a lot of latitude to change it on the fly.

However, she did respond just as well to "Barley", so that became her new name, with the standard variety of variants like "Barles" (said like "Charles"), "Barlow" or "Barlikins".

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 4 months ago

Barlikins 😂

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

My ex fiancee named my last cat Mittens, but I pretty much always just called her "Kitty". She responded to it, but I always kinda got the impression she responded to me in particular over whatever I called her.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I almost exclusively use ridiculously cutesy nicknames for them because they are perfect.

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 months ago

My cat only had a couple. My dogs, however, they have probably a dozen each.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Oh yes. I call them by their names and they know their names.

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I have many names for them, though, only one it's the official name. Nevertheless, I call them by their nicknames, which are numerous.

[–] Bluefruit@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I call my cat Sydney by a few names. Mr kitty, Mr meow, or buddy.

But in will call him by his name every once in a while.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago

Ada was always Ada or little girl.

Manuel is more “Little man” or “manny boo” or “shutthefuckupIhavetoworksoyoucaneat”

[–] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

I call Levi by his name, but when he's playing up my partner (who is from Singapore) calls him AYO UNKER GET DOWN AH

[–] waggz@programming.dev 2 points 4 months ago

mostly... Gadget becomes Gadg or Gadgeypoo, Nova becomes Nova beans.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I actually call the kitten kitten often. Or by your username, lol. Cats are dinguses! Sometimes I call her gremlin or Muppet (she's so soft and fuzzy and huggable like I imagine a Muppet)

Her government name is for the vet!

[–] CharlesReed@fedia.io 2 points 4 months ago

I mostly call mine by her name, but sometimes she's Lil Stinky Butt, sometimes Miss Ma'am (especially when she's in trouble), lately she's been Freebird because she keeps trying to get out the doggy door with the puppies. Edit: In the time since I've posted this, she's also gone by Honey Buns and Little Miss.

[–] Alpha4@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

His name is Rio (sing it). Alternatively called 'Mr Krasnapolsky' or 'Laddy'or 'Mr Pussycat'.

Nope, he gets called Meow Meows or Kitties.

[–] soulBit@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 months ago

Cthulhu gets called whatever name we currently feel she deserves - Lady Meowington, Catthulhu, Catto, Little Miss Muggins. We would only use her actual name to call her/scold her for being naughty

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 points 4 months ago

I call my cat by his name. Not his full name, just the first name unless he's being formally introduced or in a lot of trouble.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 months ago

Yes shortened nicknames mostly

[–] ViperActual@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

My cat knows his name. Best part is, he'll respond if I talk to him.
