Obi-Wan isn't opposed to a centralized, authoritarian, militaristic regime, he just thinks it should be under different management.

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 33 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah he was chill with the republic being a theocracy in all but name.

the jedi were cops, they weren't in charge of the government

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

They weren't even cops, really. More like UN "peacekeepers" generally (although I think sometimes they were basically detectives and sometimes spies). The Jedi are depicted as having basically no political agency IIRC.

It wasn't political when they tried to coup and assassinate the chancellor based on his religious beliefs?

I'm just shit-stirring.

unlimited-power IT'S TREASON, THEN!

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Given how much freedom they had and the ability to act with impunity, they were more like ICE agents; they dismember and execute people who get even a little rowdy and they never see a court case over it

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

...theocracy? Like, a Jedi theocracy? That's a pretty bad misreading of the political situation in the prequel era IMO.

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

By the end of the clone wars didn't the jedi have a large amount of political power and largely influenced republic policy? That was the point I was trying to make, but yeah, maybe I don't know enough about SW to have a good read on the situation.

Oh, I see. No, it was more the other way around, they were under the orders of the secular Republic and often did things that were against their religious or philosophical preferences as a result (generally with a sort of "lesser evil" reasoning for helping preserve the Republic, IIRC).

The peak of Jedi influence on politics was more than a thousand years prior to the events of the Clone Wars AFAIK. By the time of the Clone Wars they were largely stripped of political agency within the Republic and treated as a tool to be used by the government and not a religious order or an independent political power.

In clone wars 5-1:

Anakin: We should help the rebels

Obi-Wan: but they are terrorists

It's not an unfair description of the declining Republic (which almost seamlessly became the Empire), but I'm pretty sure Obi-Wan was opposed to it, just too much of a lib to do anything about it.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Being opposed to a system while being a general in charge of defending said system.

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

He never really actively made any choices intending to get there, though. He was raised into the Order from birth and just went with it to preserve the Republic, even though he clearly saw problems. As I said, a "lesser-evil" lib.

That's not a defense of him, though, lol. Actually, TBH, it's more of a criticism of Star Wars writing than anything else.

"the guys in this airport bar are the worst people in the universe" is a true statement in 99.9% of cases

Bea Arthur worked there if you count the holiday special as cannon

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I've had the holiday special downloaded for like 20 fucking years at this point—it's one of the first things I ever torrented. Wonder if I'll ever actually watch it.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly you should. Its really fun in a "lol what the fuck is this" kind of way. Plus Lumpy the wookie is honestly pretty adorable.

In From a Certain Point of View, they're mostly people who just ended up stuck in a shitty spot for one reason or another. Except Greedo, he just sucks ass.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago

They're lumpen-prole. They're barely even owner-operators when someone like Han barely even owns his ship.
