Posting this because I've been fussing at my partner for like what feels like years now to eat some iodized salt and they haven't done so and keep complaining about "maybe I have seasonal depression" or this or that and like okay unless I'm an ignorant shit ass moron there are few dietary sources of iodine outside of SEAFOOD, DAIRY, EGGS or SEAWEED which is basically seafood but for vegans. Anyway, unless you're eating that DAILY because it's water soluble i'm pretty sure, you should be supplementing your diet with probably at least HALF A TEASPOON of iodine EVERY DAY. depending on your weight and whatnot but also like just vibe it out

eat some iodized salt, it was a medical miracle of the 19th or whatever (I'm not an encyclopedia and I'm drunk) century

it imparts a metallic taste to food but like you can just mix it up into some water and swig it, treat it like a vitamin, idk dawg

your thyroid will be like yummy yummy yummy yummy and you might feel more energetic and you'll definitely be at less risk of developing goiter! don't make me fuss at you! eat your salt!

p.s. good news it's one of the cheapest things you can buy (so-far )

from what I've read, in contrast to the useless mountain of vitamins influences push, the reasonable supplements which normal people should take daily include vitamin D, omega 3, magnesium, a generic multi vitamin, creatine, protein.... which is still ends up as like a huge fistful of pills. at least it only costs a few cents per day, being mostly the protein powder, but I still feel geriatric opening 5 different pill bottles every morning. I'd feel even more geriatric having a pill calendar I fill up each week, and most are probably not large enough to fit the 6 whole fish oil capsules you're supposed to take every day.

Yeah that's gonna be my partner

[–] TheSpectreOfGay@hexbear.net 42 points 3 months ago (3 children)

both of my parents avoid using salt as much as possible and don't even salt meat and stuff because "salt is bad for you"

how the media talks about diets and food has done a number on so many people

[–] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 33 points 3 months ago (2 children)

rebrand it as 'electrolytes'

[–] ANarcoSnowPlow@hexbear.net 21 points 3 months ago

[–] TheSpectreOfGay@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

[–] sisatici@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I love salt. They could never make me hate salt. I could die at the hands of salt and my last words would be "I love you salt"

I'm so sorry

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago

i know it's rude of me to publicly call out my partner but it's rude of them to not eat their salt angery

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 25 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Shout out to iodized salt, it’s good stuff

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Is there morton lite/potassium chloride salt that's still iodized? seems like that'd be ideal for people worried about too much salt.

Edit: My internet's all funky and I responded to the wrong person. But fuck it. I just post 'em all. Let Mod sort 'em out.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

Yeah, there's a bunch of "salt substitute" stuff that's either 100% or 50% potassium chloride with iodine or iodized salt mixed with it. Nu-Salt, Half Salt, Morton Lite, "salt free" iodized salt, etc.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

it really is, I wish it didn't affect the taste of food though because it makes me not want to use it

[–] dat_math@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

wait... there are people who don't like the taste?

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I mean it's definitely a strong taste and I can see people who are purists not wanting the influence but personally I don't think it's a BAD taste, just definitely noticeable and not necessarily desirable

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

huh, I've literally been using iodized salt my whole life so while I believe you I genuinely don't know what difference you're referring to

[–] HamManBad@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Same here, to me that's just what salt tastes like.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

if you dissolve iodized and non-iodized salt in two glasses of water you can smell the difference. the iodized one is a bit bleachy/metallic

Besides salt, some countries have mandatory fortification of bread with iodine as well.

Miso and other fermented soy pastes are also pretty good sources for vegans.

For the Statesians, here's the USDA lookup for iodine sources.

yeah thats the 19th century alright

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Taking medication for hypothyroid and iodized salts since forever but still tried and depressed sleepi

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

it's not a silver bullet but at least you're tired and depressed with a functioning thyroid

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

it's a good practice to interrogate what you're eating for any vitamins you might be lacking. For example, a deficiency in magnesium can cause headaches and other issues. Iodine is indeed one that I realized I'm not getting enough of because of the lack of it in most foods, and the fact that I have been using kosher salt instead of iodine infused salt.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

EAT YOUR IODIZED SALT

[–] Blep@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They put it in the salt here, so it's basically impossible to not get it

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

It has to say iodized salt though, if it says sea salt you're not getting it

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago (3 children)

can i get a supplement that isn't salt?

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (2 children)

nerd they didn't salt Carthage after the third Punic war, they actually rebuilt it and it became an important province

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago

they probably make iodine tablets but make sure they're not water purification tablets because there's probably a difference but idk

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

my gummy vitamins say they have 25% of a day's

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

can i mix this with apple cider vinegar

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

you can do the same thing with it that you would with any other salt except it'll be a little copper tasting and it'll make your thyroid go "thank you more pls" (don't give it too much, gremlin rules)

[–] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

i deny my thyroid iodine cuz it be wildin

[–] DivineChaos100@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

I do but i also live in late stage capitalism

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

UK salt isn’t iodised. As a vegan supplements are pretty much my only option.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Im sure you could buy iodized salt somewhere but it doesn't matter since it's functionally a supplement

[–] moss_icon@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They have it at Sainsbury’s, I don’t go there though and don’t see the point just for one item, so I’ll probably just keep using the supplements.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Yeah if you're getting supplements you're good the only point would be if you got sick of them and wanted to add it straight to your food. But imo it doesn't taste good anyway lol

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

How much milk would I need to drink and for how long before I felt a difference? Is like, 16oz a day enough or should I just supplement?

[–] very_poggers_gay@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

to answer part of your question, i clicked a few of the first links on google (e.g., 1 and 2), and it looks like 1 cup of cow's milk provides something like 33% - 50% of the recommended daily amount for an adult.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Google ai says 16oz of whole milk is typically like 150 micrograms of iodine but can range from 40-400

So you'd need like two glasses a day but it varies

It's also in eggs btw
