Happy to have first watched Enterprise more than ten years after its initial run.
Let me watch it objectively without too much influencing from outside...

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I'm watching it for the first time, almost at the end of s3. Honestly it's pretty decent. The Xindi stuff was on shaky ground for a while, but they recovered. It's good, but I haven't had any episodes stand out as particularly excellent or terrible

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 month ago (3 children)

That's it: Overall pretty solid.
E.g. definitely better first season than TNG.
Xindi was crap imho, but some really good stuff in season 4.
I was sad that they didn't produce more after that.

[–] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

The Xindi arc has value as a snapshot of american mindset post 9-11. Justifying torture as an answer to terrorist act in a Star Trek series was wild.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago

Yes, heard that take before!
Probably the reason I hated it.
Just not what I am watching Star Trek for...

I’m just gonna say it. When writing things, you should never fuck with time. There are very good shows that do a good job of it, without it becoming the answer to everything.

Star Trek is not one of those shows. (Dr. who, comes to mind.)

Still over all enjoyed enterprise.

The time loop episode of TNG (Cause and Effect) is one of my favourite things I have ever watched. But that doesn't affect the overall timeline so I don't think it counts against your argument, which I agree with.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I swear, you can check the IMDb page for just about any sci-fi series, and there is about a 50% chance the top rated episode is a time loop episode.

That first season of tng showed us how functional data is I wouldn't change it for the urge

I wish I had watched it when it first came out. I was one of those who lsitened to others saying it wasn't good. Since I was deployed I couldn't watch it live so I never did watch it until about a decade later. Now it's one of my top ten favorite trek series.

I kid, it's #4 behind VOY, DS9, and TNG

I actually liked that Archer was so often out of his depth and had to put on a false confidence. It'd be weird if Starfleet just immediately hit the ground running with an absolute heavyweight of a captain like Picard or something.

I feel like it was a purposeful character choice to have him bumbling around, not really sure what the fuck he was doing, but having to act as if he did for the sake of the crew.

He's meant to be somewhat bad at his job, and regularly confidently incorrect.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not to mention that a lot of his actions become the basis for which the Prime Directive is created. Dude was a bit less "cowboy diplomacy" and more straightforward "cowboy" with decision making.

[–] monkeyman512@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The "your not my real dad!" relationship with Vulcans at the started didn't help either.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I don't care for a lot of discovery, but I can't say it's not entertaining. I have made it to season 2 episode 9 so far. Not sure why but I stopped there and picked up another show.

It doesn't rank in my top 3 series, but it's not deserving of all the hate it gets.

I love strange new worlds, haven't seen the newest season yet but I'm working on rewatching the whole series.

I haven't seen Picard, and honestly I don't think I will. I won't pass judgment on it's quality, as I haven't seen any of it, but I know enough to know I might be disappointed.

And if I'm being honest with myself I just want to keep the nostalgia of TNG the way it is: Pretending Nemesis never happened.

The new shows are overall good. Every show has its hits and misses. I skip a lot of season 1 TNG.

And I skip the intro of every Enterprise episode. No, I don't have enough faith, at least not while watching the show. It's a banger though and in my Playlist.

It's okay to not like the new shows, it's not okay to shit on other people who do.

[–] Apocalypteroid@feddit.uk 8 points 1 month ago (6 children)

I hate to break it to you but s3 of SNW takes a major dip in quality.

S3 of Picard is watchable without having seen the first 2 seasons (the second season is the worst Star Trek I have ever sat through), and gives the characters the send off they deserve.

[–] data1701d@startrek.website 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Despite the issues with S3, I’d still say it isn’t horrible and worth watching. There’s a couple good episodes, and hey - it’s not TNG S1.

At least in my peer group, people hated Voyager when it was running too.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 8 points 1 month ago

I considered putting Janeway's head on the character in the background here

[–] laurelraven@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 month ago

I remember people hating on DS9 and TNG as well.

Pretty much every series has had plenty of people who just hate it for not being the previous series.

Which is why I ignored people dogging on Discovery and just watched and enjoyed it, same as the rest.

(I'll admit to being harsh on Enterprise at first, but a lot of it was that intro... Plus, it did take a while to get its feet under it)

[–] bitcrafter@programming.dev 5 points 1 month ago

I didn't necessarily hate it, but it was a significant step down after DS9 and TNG.

(And to demonstrate that I am not biased against new Star Treks: I am one of the few human beings alive who loved the first season of Star Trek: Picard when it came out!)

[–] Aljernon@lemmy.today 4 points 1 month ago

There was alot to like about Voyager but they also dropped the ball alot too.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Enterprise wasn’t my favorite but I understand how people like it. Strange New Worlds is weird but I understand how people like it. Picard was a shitload of fan service but I understand how people like it. Lower Decks has very generic animation, but I understand how people can like it.

Discovery took everything that made Star Trek Star Trek and told it to go fuck itself. I don’t understand how people can like it.

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Have you watched past the reveal of Captain Lorca's past?

The reveal makes many of the very not-Trek first season issues suddenly feel much Trek.

I can see how that reveal might not play well to some. But it worked for me, and helped me forgive a bunch of issues I had with Discovery season 1.

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I had the opposite reaction to the Lorca reveal. He was the only interesting character at that point and they just threw it away.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I didn’t find him to be the only interesting character, but I agree. They sacrificed depth and nuance in favour of a shallow shock twist. One of the bigger missteps of season 1.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Airiam was also an interesting character. Unfortunately,

Season 2 spoilerShe was basically just Background Crewman #6 until the episode that actually featured her. The episode that finally explained what the hell she actually was, then promptly killed her off.

Probably my biggest issue with the series.

The mirror universe episodes of Trek are my least favorite. Making that an integral part of a show that had already retconed a bunch of crap and added the force but mushrooms was the final straw for me.

If you mean something further than that then no, but frankly I shouldn’t have to watch a dozen or more hours of a show to get to the good part.

I am glad you liked it though.

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah. If you didn't care for mirror episodes,

spoiler S1 DiscoveryA season of "Oops! All Mirror Universe" wouldn't be a nice reveal. Haha.

[–] leave_it_blank@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I waited for the big reveal that all took place in the Mirrorverse. That would have explained a lot!

Then have them travel to our Universe and adapt to it. But no, between Archer and Kirk Starfleet must have recruited just the worst of the worst.

Could have been a cool story.

Aside from the fucking God awful theme song, I actually liked Enterprise

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I actually liked the theme song tbh. Its cheesy but has a charm to it and I think it fits the "early exploration" kind of vibe they seemed to be going for with the setting and timeframe choice.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 4 points 1 month ago

I like it, but for some reason I don't like it as the intro.

It totally fits the theme like you say, it definitely has an uplifting hopeful tone.

But it's just out of place in my brain, so I skip it while watching the show.

Doesn't stop me from jamming out to it in the car.

Which new show am I hating on?

(Also I liked enterprise. Just skip the last episode with Ryker apparently being Chef.)(discovery. Not so much.)

[–] teft@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago

the last episode with Ryker apparently being Chef

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

The upcoming Starfleet Academy most likely.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What do you mean chef riker. Enterprise was cancelled after season 4, episode 21 and nobody can convince me otherwise!

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Episode 22 wasn’t a real episode. Some loser made a deep fake fan fiction!

I don't hate it. Why would I? These fans need to in their own language 'touch grass'.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 5 points 1 month ago

New stuff always draws fire because of the hypothetical great thing the creators could be doing instead. Time will pass, it will become old and familiar, the hate will burn out, and people will start to eventually appreciate it for what is actually was instead of hating it for what it wasn't.

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

This is exactly right. Very well done.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Shit... this means I might end up enjoying STD in like 10 years. Please don't tell me I'm gonna be an STD fan.

I can't say I've ever seen that. Partly because my friends would never attack someone for linking something, partly because I've never met anyone who likes Discovery.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Lame that people care so much what other people like.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 3 points 1 month ago

I like DIS!

I went to the series finale screening.
