Cory Doctorow wrote a novella called The Masque of the Red Death about a bunch of tech billionaires who build a bunker and then retreat to it when society starts collapsing.

spoiler

They all shit themselves to death from cholera while the rest of the world pulls together to help each other via mutual aid and cooperation, which they absolutely cannot fathom.

Could have come up with a better title huh

[–] rentasintorn@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's a reference to a Poe short story, I think.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

No I get that, but it sounds like basically the same story. At least make the title a pun or something

[–] rentasintorn@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 8 minutes ago

Ah, ok, I misunderstood!

This was an okay interview honestly. Felt like socdem slop. She drops "inshallah" unironically at one point, idk if she's one of us or speaks Arabic or what.

This guy made his bag early on and is now advocating against the current prevailing AI attitudes towards from freaks like Musk and Thiel. Dude's a pro-AI lib, but this interview had some good insights and the interviewer asked good questions about fascism, environmental impacts, etc.

One insight was that everyone in silicon valley is going all in trying to build an AI God, rather than focus on how the tech we already have could improve people's lives in areas like medicine. Nothing new to socialists but it was refreshing to hear and I hope hits for some people.

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 60 points 23 hours ago

This is just marketing bullshit, loads of companies fired a fuck-ton of people to be replaced with AI and it didn't work. "It's gonna happen next year so you better invest in us" works on finance goons I guess but fuck me this is just a tired refrain from these AI CEO turds.

We should really start a billionaire bunker map project.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

does anyone know the locations of these? because the registry would probably be trivial to get running for someone well versed.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 4 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I think you'd have to do it as a crowdsourcing project. Take submissions and then filter them against listings for real estate sales?

All of these have to get listed at some point, so all of their locations are out there. The only ones that won't be listed are the custom builds where a billionaire bought a plot of land in a forest and then dug their own bunker out. That information won't be completely secret either though. There will be people that know or local news that mentioned it and people that can report it.

In some cases you simply won't be able to confirm who owns the private bunker, but it's still useful as a private bunker map without listing owners anyway. The only people that own private bunkers a multi millionaires and up.

Eventually that kind of map will be genuinely useful.

The rich have been building their private fallout bunkers for a while already. I wonder if this is partly to hype up AI to keep the excitement going to entice continuing investment. "You guys, AI is so scary it's going to replace all these jobs." And I think it will, and hopefully not to a point that is socially destabilizing. But the real economy is already on the rocks, I don't buy it that recent layoffs of white collar workers is solely or even primarily due to LLMs taking those jobs.

The point I'm trying to get at is that the people telling us that AI is a terrifying world-changing force are the same people who need to keep money pouring in to their AI businesses.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 29 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

What's the fucking point of being rich if you have to live in a bunker?

to make other people miserable. capital selects for sadism

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 13 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Let em have their bunker. They'll come out within a month anyway if anything from boredom. I doubt people who can make anything reality whenever they want are gonna have much patience for living in a bunker, no matter how nice the bunker is.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 hours ago

I said this in another thread, but I saw a diagram of one of those bunkers once and it was basically like a few storeys of luxury condos, a common area and then a huge armory in the basement. It made me laugh imagining sealing up a few dozen of the worlds biggest sociopaths and egomaniacs in there with nothing to do and a massive pile of guns. I genuinely would rather take my chances on the outside of that thing lol.

But yes, 100% let them have it. Also if anyone finds one don't forget to check the condition the hatch. It'd be an awful shame if a big rock were to roll on top of it so nobody could get out. Awful shame.

[–] Ekranoplane@hexbear.net 4 points 9 hours ago

I propose we rig the bunkers with cameras then send them back in. Make a nice reality TV show out of it.

[–] deforestgump@hexbear.net 24 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Can't wait to fart in Zuck's bunker vent

[–] BabyTurtles@hexbear.net 16 points 22 hours ago

Stocking up on canned beanis just to participate.

[–] gayspacemarxist@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I mean, its really thoughtful of them to build their own jail cells.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 2 points 13 hours ago

Pile high, pile high, the devil's underground

Pile high, pile high, keep the devil down

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Game theory: why shouldn't private security just off the bozo and loot his bunker?

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 41 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Their shock/bomb collars mostly

[–] fox@hexbear.net 30 points 1 day ago

Seems like the guy in charge is the guy with the detonator then

[–] huf@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

eh, these types of social systems need an actually charismatic leader who can control the armed forces. i dont think modern CEOs are fit for that without the state protecting their assets. no rizz.

it would quickly devolve into the praetorian guard picking emperors type madness.

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the best case scenario for a billionaire in a bunker is analogous to being Emperor under a Shogunate. Like your the symbolic leader who is needed to press their thumb against various biometric locks but it's very clear whoever in your security force has secured leadership is actually in charge. Take your MRE, go play some playstation, the adults are talking.

Worst case obviously involves a LOT of torture.

[–] huf@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

the majordomo taking over, yes

If the dickheads forcing AI-based unemployment to happen to the rest of us are all hiding underground, why the fuck wouldn’t we just kinda… idk, not do that?

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Wait, if I'm underground, and if you're underground, then who is up there to oppress people?!"

porky-scared-flipped porky-scared

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 6 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

i mean, we could just not do that right now.

wtf could they really do, shoot all millions of us one at a time? a bolshevik-style takeover is technically possible right now.

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 16 points 22 hours ago

Every time they say shit like this, it's a lie to get people to invest in AI. That shit doesn't work like they say it does, companies are failing to actually replace workers.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just add concrete and you got yourself a barbara-pit

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 10 points 23 hours ago

Don't even need cement. Some burning tires in front of the air intake will be more than enough to smoke em out

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They're gonna try to build self sustaining ecosystems in these places and not realize the tiniest fuck up means they gonna mess everything up. Despite money not being a problem I swear they are gonna cheap out somewhere

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 hours ago

I mean they already live in a giant, self-sustaining ecosystem that's able to withstand quite a lot of fuck-ups and they've still managed to fuck that up. No way they'll last for long in a tiny, fragile one that they build themselves lol.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 20 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

BioSphere famously devolved from a bunch of scientists dedicated to the mission into a bunch of squabbling and screaming matches with someone legit cutting off access to the media except through them, in addition to minor problems cascading into crop failures that would have starved them all to death without additional food deliveries

I'm sure an egomaniacal sociopath and his flunkies will do great

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 11 points 23 hours ago

Pauly Shore was great in that documentary

[–] jack@hexbear.net 9 points 23 hours ago

They already can't build anything correctly

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh cool so the ai will take care of the poor so they don't need to work right? anakin-padme-2

Right?? anakin-padme-4

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

oh they'll take care of the poor alright

[–] lib1@hexbear.net 14 points 22 hours ago

Tech bro billionaires live in a monoculture where the imminence of AGI is unfalsifiable dogma and the idea of meeting someone who’s never used an LLM is unthinkable

[–] onwardknave@hexbear.net 11 points 22 hours ago

I imagine this could be some fun real live roleplaying... Gather your party, hit the local tavern for intel, find the guy drinking alone in the corner who happens to have some grainy snapshots of the bunker blueprints for 30 gold. Hit the general store for flares, duct tape, an extra hank of paracord and some propane cans, and set out to banish the demilich from this plane of existence forever.

[–] musicpostingonly@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago

A can of spray foam can be had for very little money.

The bunker has plumbing. Water, waste, etc. they can be dug up easily and rerouted.

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 1 day ago

The intake pipes are a great place to route the post apocalyptic sewage.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 10 points 23 hours ago

The rich have been building bunkers since the start of the cold war, this seems like some sort of AI related grift.

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 9 points 22 hours ago

Yea definitely nothing to do with climate change, no one acknowledge climate change, nothing happening with that

[–] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 10 points 23 hours ago

Underground bunkers need ventilation, and those are a great place to install public toilets.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 7 points 22 hours ago

The best thing to do is not tax them. I'm a temporarily embarrassed one btw. Eventually I will join their bunker
