I remember that too. I also remember when 80% of conversations online started with "a/s/l?" and canines roamed the chatrooms like never before or since.
The days before profile pictures and text. Nowadays anybody can check my profile and be none the wiser.
That T was just too much! Bandwidth back then isn't what it is now.
I knew rofl in the early 90s and did not start seeing rotfl until the later 90s.
Rotflmao was always the form i saw. I was a PowWow chat guy in the mid-90s. That and Chathouse. A lot fewer acronyms back then.

I still use rofl because thats what iOS uses to autocomplete 🤣 emoji. It looks like lmao does too, but i always use rofl.
Rofl doesn't involve ass, that's certainly why it's not popular lol.
My guess is that the "roflcopter" turned it into a meme and memes often have lifespans.

In my gaming circles roflstomp was quite entertaining during it's hayday.
I still enjoy a good roflstomp during my showers.

I think the pandemic made everyone realize how filthy floors are.
I instantly read this in David Attenborough's voice.
LMAO indicates something a person actually does, whereas ROFL isn't really a thing people do, so its more of a meme than it is useful.
That's my guess anyways. Like the latter is less mature because of that and so people use it less.
I hope you can get your ass reattached soon. Sucks when it comes off.
