Othello and Desdemona in Venice by Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856)

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, often shortened to Othello,[a] is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare around 1603. Set in Venice and Cyprus, the play depicts the Moorish military commander Othello as he is manipulated by his ensign, Iago, into suspecting his wife Desdemona of infidelity. Othello is widely considered one of Shakespeare's greatest works and is usually classified among his major tragedies alongside Macbeth, King Lear, and Hamlet. Unpublished in the author's life, the play survives in one quarto edition from 1622 and in the First Folio.

Othello has been one of Shakespeare's most popular plays, both among playgoers and literary critics, since its first performance, spawning numerous stage, screen, and operatic adaptations. Among actors, the roles of Othello, Iago, Desdemona, and Emilia (Iago's wife) are regarded as highly demanding and desirable. Critical attention has focused on the nature of the play's tragedy, its unusual mechanics, its treatment of race, and on the motivations of Iago and his relationship to Othello. Originally performed by white actors in dark makeup, the role of Othello began to be played by black actors in the 19th century.

Shakespeare's major source for the play was a novella by Cinthio, the plot of which Shakespeare borrowed and reworked substantially. Though not among Shakespeare's longest plays, it contains two of his four longest roles in Othello and Iago.

I kind of feel like one of the most radicalizing bits in Capital 1 has for me been the understanding that we give the capitalists constant no interest loan by selling them our labor without getting paid until later.

The whole thing about company stores, fake bread and looking at it all now when people live on credit cards month to month, paying huge student loans and mortages. And it's just like LET'S GO REVOLUTION!

I also feel like if more libs would understand this, it might open their eyes a bit. It's a system built to scam you, from top to bottom.

Only got one single trick or treater. I guess I get to eat a bunch of candy now, but it's sad. When I was a kid and trick or treating, I remember the streets like swarming with kids. And I see more kids playing or riding bikes around my neighborhood on any normal day than I saw on Halloween.

What happened? Are kids not allowed to have fun anymore?

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 17 points 4 weeks ago

The KKKri$$tians happened. They invented "trunk or treat" so they could keep their kids fully surveilled at all times.

Inflation, cold temperatures, and U.S. citizens in general (especially suburbanites) are only continuing to become increasingly asocial or antisocial; nobody is really doing anything about the loneliness epidemic.

At a church group this morning, someone asked if food assistance programs were doing the right thing or not because they stave off the consequences.

I thought they meant like “if we feed hungry people, then the gov’t won’t be forced to provide/reinstate food stamps.”

Ghoulish enough, but it was worse.

They clarified that people would not understand the consequence of voting for Trump unless they go hungry.

Out of about 10 people, 2 people seemed to admit thinking this way. There was pushback.

On the good side, the church is legitimately service oriented, and donated 200 meals today.

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

What a painfully backwards way to think. Do you know if people were able to get them to see why that line of thinking is wrong?

Based on your anecdote at least 80% of people disagreed with them, that's a good sign

[–] principalkohoutek@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago

Had maybe 40-50 trick or treaters, which isn't too bad cuz it rained all night. Got told we had the best candy in the neighborhood and a "baller spread" of candy. Felt good to keep the tradition of being nice to your neighbors alive

Listened to some of the Norm Finkelstein/Candace Owens interview at the gym. Telling someone with an antisemitic, conspiracy-brained audience about a "Jewish supremacist billionaire class" surely is a choice. what-the-hell

I get what he means and he isn't wrong, you just really shouldn't phrase it like that when your current audience is a bunch of chuds who believe in a Jewish cabal extracting adrenochrome from babies or some dumb shit.

there are people whose entire careers were built off writing wholly unresearched and totally spurious blogs in the early 2000s and now they're some of the biggest names in political writing and at no point did they ever learn a single thing.

Recently had a family get-together and was mildly horrified to discover that nearly all my older relatives are having their minds melted by constant exposure to slop through their various social media algorithms.

I watched some of them sit for hours, delighted at the constant stream of frankly revolting and upsetting images and videos.

I thought it was bad before, when one of these get together meant the TVs were always blaring either a 24 hour news network or else reruns of old sitcoms, but this time the TVs weren’t even switched on. The situation seems dire.

My food assistance runs out tomorrow, but I’m pretty good at dumpster diving and found a buddy with some extra vegan food so I think I’m good

Meanwhile I’m laughing that Trump is getting frustrated that the government is shutdown after basically trying to rip it apart

“The Democrats just don’t know what they’re doing,” Trump told reporters Friday. “I don’t know what’s wrong with them. They’ve never done a thing like this. They’ve become crazed lunatics. All they have to do is say, ‘Let’s go. Let’s open up our country.’ And everything snaps back into shape. So there’s something wrong with them.”

i’m such a Halloween nerd that i’ve tended to get genuinely depressing post holiday blues this time of year lol, but i’m trying to shift my mindset and enjoy that November has a charm all its own, easing from the “spooky season” mindset to the “contemplative, bittersweet, beautiful-but-melancholy quiet” season mindset. they dovetail well too since a lot of horror media has an undercurrent of sadness.

(the early sunsets are pure evil tho) (also apologies for spreading temperate climate hegemony)

There is an entire cohort of people who animated a bit of Adventure time, got to make one show and then didn't do anything with their careers after that. And I think that's a good model for everyone. Everyone should get to make one show and then fuck off.

Rant? Rant.

When looking at possible skills to learn, does anyone else find themselves unable to shake off the sense there’s no point because they won’t ever be a good [whatever skill I’m looking at], and won’t be picked by an employer? Do I want to learn coding? In college I was surrounded by many ambitious people and I was trying to tread water when I was trying to learn coding. So much so that coding made fucking calculus look easy by comparison as if my brain is psychically locked from learning anything that might get me employed. I’m great at useless, irrelevant stuff.

So even if I do struggle through to learn coding, I’m not “better” than my peers, and there are a LOT of peers so any employer would rather have them over me. Yes, I understand that a lot of the job market is nakedly nepotism and luck, but then even if I make a coding friend, then there is someone more well-connected than me and I am locked out of the job market.

IDK, what do the rest of you do when you are skeptical of starting something you’re convinced will only end in failure and thanks to the way everything’s set up, failure is a death sentence. I’m not going to go and get myself in god knows how much debt if I’m not going to be hired anyway.

TL;DR: How do the rest of y’all deal with two things: the presumption of failure for any reason, and resisting self-pity?

a second obama phone call has struck the NYC mayoral race

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Why do people take Obama's calls man. He won at the helm of a movement he immediately abandoned, proceeded to accomplish none of what he set out to do, and then he inspired the current american fascist movement while he was at it (Altough to be fair to him a large part of that is sinply because he was black).

That's not even getting into his warmongering or the entire generation of totally useless Democrats that came out of his administration. But I guess some people would call that a positive.
