Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Odd, this is exactly what criminals would do.

[–] barnaclebutt@lemmy.world 71 points 5 months ago (2 children)

If someone shows up in an unmarked car with no badge and tries to abduct you, why can't you just shoot them?

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 51 points 5 months ago (5 children)

You can! As much as you can shoot anyone. You're just likely to be severely outgunned and also you'll have to stand trial over it. No idea the odds of winning that case, but the govt largely isn't going after people with money to hire lawyers. Probably get a defense fund donated bigger than Mangione.

Wait, what am I thinking? They will just deport you rather than have a trial and risk a judge declaring their tactics illegal and granting a self-defense claim to resisters.

[–] capital_sniff@lemmy.world 34 points 5 months ago (1 children)

We had a fellow who shot at the unmarked unidentified police roaming around Minneapolis during the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd. He was at a gas station if I remember and they beat the shit out of him. It took a while but he won the case and some money.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think that guy actually shot back when they were driving around firing pepper balls at random people.

[–] SoloCritical@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago

I thought it was “rubber” bullets they were firing at people out past curfew. Looks no different than an AR, sounds no different than an AR, how is one to know the difference in the split second when they feel their life is on the line? Answer is: they can’t, if you feel like your life or person is in danger, the sword is the only way.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago

You're not likely to stand trial over it

Isn't that "stand your ground"? Or does that only work on black or brown people?

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today 60 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Can't be held accountable if there's no accountability!

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 38 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Seriously, officers who aren't pulling them over and ticketing/arresting then should be fired or removed imm

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 19 points 5 months ago

they are most likely being told higher up in secret not to.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

Yeah this is no different then defunding covid studies / the cdc and claiming covid no longer exists

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 34 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Take a picture of the VIN! It’s on the windshield at the bottom. Sometimes other places too

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What do we do with the VIN?

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It’s tied to the title and if it’s a private vehicle will tell you who the owner is. Theoretically.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Do average citizens have access to that information though? I would think it wouldn't show personal information.

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Well, consider a Nuremberg Trials situation where these people’s actions are brought to light. You might not be able to do anything immediately, but their actions can always be documented and preserved.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Carfax lets you check some information with a VIN.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 31 points 5 months ago

So if someone wants to commit crimes, they can get take the plates off an unassuming van and the cops wont touch them? Got it.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 22 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Man. Driving around without plates is always sure to raise an eyebrow in most people.

I'm starting to wonder if we need something to mark a part of the vehicle to alert people it is definitely ICE. Something like vital to the vehicle so they can't just remove it. Like a tire. Maybe something you could like quickly toss in front of and behind a tire. Something that will stick in it. Tires are pretty thick so maybe something slightly sharp, but strong. Maybe two pieces of purpose built steel wrapped around each other. Like that "jacks" game with the bouncy ball.

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Just paint. Any color. Nail polish works.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That doesn't usually flatten a tire

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Ah, sorry. I was thinking of IDing purposes.

A wad of bubblegum with 2 or three nails pushed through it in opposing directions? Maybe a crumbled cardboard roll from a toilet paper instead of gum, not sure… something cheap and fast to produce is the answer, with multiple nails to make sure it sticks.

Only problem with nails is that they can simultaneously clog the hole they create, but it’s a start.

Caltrop is the word you're looking for.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 3 points 5 months ago

That sounds dangerous and illegal

[–] hcf@sh.itjust.works 20 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Oh oh! I know! If they really want to look ghostly then they could wear white sheets over themselves while arresting people.

👻

[–] elvith@feddit.org 19 points 5 months ago (1 children)

With some kind of pointy hood?

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

A grand ‘ol wizard’s hat perchance?

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Be more ghostlike, you say? I'm sure we can find some people that are willing to facilitate.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Apparently one of them was a good Nazi recently

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 6 points 5 months ago (3 children)

The link for "Customs and Border Patrol agent" goes to fucking careers dot CBP dot gov. Whatever news outlet that is is doing recruitment advertising in an article about a suicide.

It’s the New York Daily News. Specifically, Nicholas Williams and Rocco Parascandola.

It seems they may write for multiple entities so it’s entirely possible that this was an editor choice and not their own. I don’t know though.

Get the VIN if you get close enough

Ok but seriously, what are you going to do? Find out who owns it? Check the accident report? This whole "no plates" commotion is pointless. The police don't give a shit. We know that and so far it seems as if nothing will change that.

[–] lando55@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago

Check the Carfax

Noem says she is just doing it to protect the kids on Halloween and keep them safe. Well shouldn't we as good citizens help their kids and go and protect their neighborhoods while they are protecting ours... Seems only fair.

If you see a vehicle parked without plates please remember to deflate the tires.

[–] KingOfSleep@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 months ago

Secret Police gonna secret.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Gestapo criminals committing hate crimes

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Plate less?? What the actual fuck

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Remind me of other times in history when a militarized government agency was allowed to operate in secret with total impunity and how that turned out.

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

A fat ghost

[–] DeICEAmerica@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

They are ALL going to disappear like ghosts when the Dem govs finally get off their asses and deputize the scores of ex military and LEO that are NOT in love with Trump. I am shocked Pritzker has not done this yet. I along with many of my retired LEO are chomping at the bit to get rid of these bad apples.
